Fever dream (2016) is the first and only novel ever written by Samanta Schweblin, an Argentinian short story writer. The narrative develops itself through a conversation between the narrator and her interlocutor, and focuses mainly on the delicate yet disturbing relationship between two mothers and their children. The present paper is guided by the interest of analyzing these relations, focusing on the traditional concepts of maternal instinct and child innocence. With the intention of helping in the understanding of these themes, a study of selected short stories by the author will be made. Finally, the manifestation of the fantastic genre in the mentioned texts will be studied, considering that the distortion of reality is one of the distinct traits of Schweblins production
Informetrics on M. N. Srinivas
M. N. Srinivas, the well known sociologist is widely recognised as architect of modern Indian sociology and social anthropology. His publications have been analysed by year, domain, authorship pattern, channels of communication used. Keywords, etc. The results indicate that the papers published by him are of a nature that qualify him to be a 'role model' for the younger generations to emulate.
By the end of 1995, Srinivas had to his credit 144 papers which, included 33 broad papers in sociology and anthropology; 18 papers in social change; 28 papers in village studies; 12 papers on religion; 17 papers on caste and 36 papers of general popular interest. The periods 1958-61 and 1974-77, when Srinivas was 38-41 and 58-61 years old. were his most productive periods with highest publication activity
Characterising and propagating the sources of error and uncertainty in the optical measurement of gears using designed experiments
In recent years, the growth of optical techniques has introduced the possibility of allowing several alternative methods for non-contact gear measurement to be utilised. Optical methods can offer many advantages over tactile, such as the potential to evaluate delicate surfaces quickly and measure the whole area of the gear tooth flank at the sub-micron level. However, to maximise their potential, the magnitude of error and characterisation of the sources of error and uncertainty need to be understood. By utilising a series of designed experiments with known size gear artefacts, the effects caused by the change of specific key instrument parameters can be evaluated. These measurement trials demonstrate how the results from experimental methodologies can be used to determine the statistical significance of any predetermined instrument variables under study. When correctly planned, designed experiments allow the identification of the sources of error. By applying statistical methods, we can determine if these sources are significant or not. This will allow determination of which parameters need to be defined when optimising the conditions for measurement by comparing the results with those from the UK National Gear Metrology Laboratory. This comparison can also provide guidance on developing measurement uncertainty
Critical current oscillations in strong ferromagnetic pi junctions
We report magnetic and electrical measurements of Nb Josephson junctions with strongly ferromagnetic barriers of Co, Ni, and Ni80Fe20 (Py). All these materials show multiple oscillations of critical current with a barrier thickness implying repeated 0-pi phase transitions in the superconducting order parameter. We show, in particular, that the Co barrier devices can be accurately modeled using existing clean limit theories and that, despite the high exchange energy (309 meV), the large IcRN value in the pi state means Co barriers are ideally suited to the practical development of superconducting pi-shift devices.</p
Point contact spectroscopy on electron doped Pr(1-x)LaCe(x)CuO(4-y)
Point contact spectroscopy has been used to address the question of the symmetry of the order parameter in the superconducting Pr(1-x)LaCe(x)CuO(4-y) compound. We recorded a huge variety of data that were consistently interpreted by considering a d-wave symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. Despite the different features appearing in the tunneling conductance spectra, all data inferred a superconducting energy gap amplitude. Delta similar or equal to 3.6 +/- 0.2 meV, with a conventional BCS temperature dependence and a ratio 2 Delta/K(B)T(c) similar or equal to 3.5 +/- 0.2. Also for the rare contacts showing a smaller gap value Delta similar or equal to 2.0 meV we found the same BCS ratio confirming that we are probing a sample area with reduced superconductivity (T(c) similar or equal to 14K). Andreev reflection in ferrimagnetic CoFe_{2}O_{4} spin filters
We have performed point-contact spectroscopy measurements on a sample constituted by a metallic ferromagnetic oxide (SrRuO3) bottom electrode and a tunnel ferrimagnetic (CoFe2O4) barrier. Andreev reflection is observed across the tunnel barrier. From the comparison of Andreev reflection in SrRuO3 and across the CoFe2O4 barrier we infer that the ferrimagnetic barrier has a spin filter efficiency not larger than +13%. The observation of a moderate and positive spin filtering is discussed in the context of the microstructure of the barriers and symmetry-related spin-filtering effects
