Texture-related roughness of (Nb,Ti)N sputter-deposited films
We study the properties of (Nb,Ti)N films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering in an atmosphere of argon and nitrogen at ambient substrate temperature, focusing, in particular, on the technological factors determining film texture and roughness. We find that increasing the adatom, energy, while keeping the film chemical composition constant, results in a change of texture from [111] to [100]. Similar changes in film texture are observed as the nitrogen injection decreases for a constant sputtering pressure, indicating that adatom energy is not the only one, determining factor. Analyzing the experimental data, it is concluded that nitrogen concentration, has a very strong influence on the process of the texture formation, since an increase in nitrogen injection results in an increase in adatom energy, while the film. growth is driven toward [111] texturing. Film toughness is strongly related with texture in both experiments, i.e., decreases with an increase in the ratio of [200] and [111] XRD line intensities, indicating that film roughness is determined by crystal habit

Quantum superposition of charge states on capacitively coupled superconducting islands
We investigate the ground state properties of a system containing two superconducting islands coupled capacitively by a wire. The ground state is a macroscopic superposition of charge states, even though the islands cannot exchange charge carriers. The ground state of the system is probed by measuring the switching current of a Bloch transistor containing one of the islands. Calculations based on superpositions of charge states on both islands show good agreement with the experiments. The ability to couple quantum mechanical charge fluctuations in two neighboring devices using a wire is relevant for realizing quantum computation with this kind of circuit
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Magnetic phase diagram and cluster glasslike properties of stage-1 graphite-intercalated FeCl3
We present a comprehensive investigation of the magnetic properties of stage-1 graphite intercalated FeCl3 using a combination of DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, thermoremanent magnetization, and field-dependent magnetization measurements. This van der Waals system, with a centrosymmetric honeycomb lattice, combines frustration and disorder, due to intercalation, and may be hosting topologically nontrivial magnetic phases. Our study identifies two magnetic phase transitions at Tf1≈4.2 K and at Tf2≈2.7 K. We find that the paramagnetic state, for T>Tf1, is dominated by short-range ferromagnetic correlations. These build up well above Tf1 and lead to a significant change in magnetic entropy, which reaches ΔSMPk=-5.52 J kg-1K-1 at 7 T. Between Tf1 and Tf2, we observe slow spin dynamics characteristic of a cluster glasslike state, whereas for T<Tf2, our results indicate the onset of a low-temperature long-range ordered state. The analysis of the experimental results leads to a complex phase diagram, which may serve as a reference for future investigations searching for topological nontrivial phases in this system. Exchange magnetic field torques in YIG/Pt bilayers observed by the spin-Hall magnetoresistance
The effective field torque of an yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) film on the spin accumulation in an attached platinum (Pt) film is measured by the spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). As a result, the magnetization direction of a ferromagnetic insulating layer can be measured electrically. Experimental transverse and longitudinal resistances are well described by the theoretical model of SMR in terms of the direct and inverse spin-Hall effect, for different Pt thicknesses [3, 4, 8, and 35 nm]. Adopting a spin-Hall angle of Pt ?SH = 0.08, we obtain the spin diffusion length of Pt (? = 1.1±0.3?nm) as well as the real (Gr = (7±3)×1014???1m?2) and imaginary part (Gi = (5±3)×1013???1m?2) of the spin-mixing conductance and their ratio (Gr/Gi = 16±4).QN/Quantum NanoscienceApplied Science
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
