DESIGN AS A FUNCTIONAL LEADER: A case study of Philips to investigate the potential of design as a leading functional discipline
This research investigates the role of design as a functional leader in multinational industries, to drive innovation successfully at a strategic level. It involved a detailed case study of the innovation process, and practices within Philips Design based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, where design is a key decision making function within the company but not yet recognised as a leading discipline at strategic level. Philips Design wanted to use design research to build an integrated map of its actual practices and correlate these with other corporate innovation practices, to help establish strategic recognition for their value. The doctoral challenge was to explicate the process and determine whether the findings have generic capacity to support the role of design as a functional leading discipline.
The investigation integrates an iterative loop of; abductive reasoning of design thinking and inductive reasoning of management thinking in an action research cycle. The case study was part of an empirical enquiry, where the researcher became a participatory observer at Philips Design, conducting one-on-one interviews for data collection and refining their analysis using a Delphi Technique. Three other multinational organisations were explored to take into account how each perceives the contribution of design and the different roles it plays in their organisation. Data triangulation was also used to validate findings with a third party expert.
The research contributes to knowledge by confirming the conditions for design to act as a leading functional discipline. It shows that design cannot be the only functional lead for a multinational organisation. It identifies the major reason for this as the difference between thinkers trying to find viable options for the future and practitioners trying to defend the core business in their organisation, resulting in a gap between strategy and operation. The research further elaborates on the reasons for the gap to exist through qualitative conceptual relationships between designer behaviour and organisational culture in the different innovation cycles that exist in the organisation
This project, presented as a graduation requirement for the Biomedical Engineering program, aims to automate the generation and visualization of monthly reports for clients in the Customer Service area at Philips Colombia using Power BI. The previous reporting process was manual, time-consuming, error-prone, and lacked flexibility for customization.
The proposed solution centralizes and automates data originally processed via Excel macros, integrating them into a structured Power BI data model. This enables the creation of interactive dashboards displaying key performance indicators (KPIs), maintenance schedules, financial summaries, and customizable filters by client, site, date, and equipment type.TABLA DE CONTENIDO 1. Magnetic resonance is indispensable in a clinical and research medicine for the prevention, diseases detection and treatment of humans. Therefore, in the introduction was defined the magnetic resonance and described its use and purpose in the medicine. Our main goal was to define and describe all needed steps for set up and start the Philips magnetic resonance, focusing mainly on the electrical aspects. In process of setting up and starting the Philips magnetic resonance, it is necessary to strictly follow the manufacturer\u27s instructions. Following the instructions, performing measurements and the necessary calibrations is a prerequisite for a positive safety inspection. After positive safety inspection, the magnetic resonance can be handed over to the customer for usage
The Electric Shaver Battle – A case study and analysis of the global dispute between Philips and Izumi concerning the legal protection of the shape of Philips’ electric shavers and an assessment of Philips’ legal strategy and its effects on the market
As the title “The Electric Shaver Battle” reveals, this thesis is about a global legal dispute between two electric shaver manufacturers. The Dutch company Philips was the sole supplier in the world of triple-headed rotary shavers, and had obtained trademark and design protection for the shape of the top part of the shaver in several jurisdictions. Izumi, a Japanese company, decided to enter the triple-headed rotary shaver market with its own triple-headed shaver models. Philips reacted strongly against this threat to its virtual monopoly position, and the “shaver battle” was a fact. The dispute came to spread to eleven countries over three continents, and is still ongoing. Mainly Philips has sued Izumi for trademark and competition law infringement, while Izumi and its related companies has sought the cancellation of Philips’ trademarks. The main ground for invalidation and cancellation of the trademarks has been that the shape of the trademarks is necessary to obtain the technical result. In almost all jurisdictions the contested trademarks have been cancelled on this ground. Nonetheless, Philips has continued to sue companies selling Izumi-manufactured shavers even after the repetitious losses in courts of numerous countries.
In this thesis I have analyzed and described twenty-five judgments and decisions of the dispute, which is very close to an exhaustive presentation of all the judgments rendered. In each judgment, I have described the parties’ claims, the grounds and argumentation and the court’s reasoning and decision, and also compared the different judgments with each other. The thesis thus comprises a thorough empirical gathering and presentation of nearly all the judgments of the dispute. The judgments of the thesis mainly concerns trademark law, but also competition law and design law is discussed.
I have also tried to determine and analyze Philips’ international legal IPR enforcement and competition strategy and how successful or unsuccessful the strategy has been for Philips. I have tried to assess what consequences the strategy has had for Philips’ competitors and the competition on electric shaver markets all over the world. I find it interesting that Philips despite repetitious expensive losses has continued to initiate litigations and take other legal actions, which is why I have also tried to determine what Philips has gained on the strategy, and what its competitors have lost. Furthermore, I have tried to see what effects Philips’ legal actions has had on the triple-headed shaver market, and how the market has changed after Philips lost its monopoly position in the various countries
