The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Unter Verwendung des vorgeschlagenen Modulationsverfahrens mit variabler Schaltfrequenz ist ein hoch effizienter Betrieb des Gleichspannungswandlers über dem gesamten Arbeitsbereich möglich. vThis thesis describes the realization of a bidirectional DC/DC converter with a constant output power of 1kW over a voltage range of 20 to 60V on the primary and 200 to 600V on the secondary side. This project is motivated by the energy feed-in tariffs for photovoltaic systems. When the feed-in tariffs expire, it is more economical to use the energy directly than to feed it into the supply network. In this work, a low-voltage energy storage system made of recycled cells on the primary side is used for this purpose. The DC/DC converter enables to retrofit an energy storage system to the existing infrastructure consisting of photovoltaic panels and inverter. Asingle-stage, isolatedDC/DCconverter basedontheDualActiveBridge (DAB) topology is used as the link between the battery storage and the photovoltaic system. Conventional implementations of DAB, however, show high conduction losses at asymmetrical voltage loads on the primary and secondary side. The successful combination of the respective voltage range on the primary and secondary side together with a continuous output power is therefore the novelty of this work. To analyze the loss mechanisms that limit the operation range, the losses are described using a model. A comparison of measurement and simulation proves the validity of the model. The use of a variable switching frequency is technically as well as economically the most attractive option for covering the entire working range efficiently. In comparison to other examined approaches, no additional hardware is required. Likewise, there is no discontinuity in energy transmission behavior, as can occur when a transformer winding is switched. The operation of DAB with variable switching frequency is considered in detail and the ratio of active and reactive power is maximized to increase efficiency. While observing further boundary conditions, such as saturation in magnetic components and peak current values of the semiconductors, a modulation method is derived that enables transmission of 1kW power over the entire operation range. On the basis of the simulation model, possible adjustments to the designed prototype are investigated in order to keep the efficiency of DAB above 95% over the entire working range.Using the proposed modulation method with variable switching frequency, a highly efficient operation of the DC/DC converter over the entire working range is possible

Optimized commutation circuit for improved utilization of SiC

Silicon carbide MOSFETs have increasingly been recognized as advantageous compared to conventional silicon IGBTs; however, they face significant challenges due to a high defect density in the raw material. To optimize semiconductor efficiency, it is critical to minimize both conduction and switching losses. Conduction losses are influenced by on-state resistance and device breakdown voltage, while switching losses are dependent on switching speed, which is constrained by turn-off voltage overshoot and system stray inductance. Therefore, the reduction of stray inductance is paramount for decreasing both types of losses. This work presents a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the art, outlining essential device characteristics and limitations. It identifies the distribution of stray inductance in the DC-link and power module as significant constraints. While DC-snubber circuits are discussed as a potential solution, their effectiveness decreases at higher currents due to increased damping losses. An active controlled snubber is introduced, and its operational principles in conjunction with a half-bridge configuration are described. This setup facilitates a substantial reduction in stray inductance during MOSFET and diode turn-off, resulting in negligible losses during turn-on. The analytical description of the operational mechanism reveals opportunities for zero-current switching of the auxiliary switch. The derived model is validated through empirical measurements and is employed to predict behavior in subsequent switching events. Comparative analysis with a similar DC-snubber configuration indicates that the active snubber exhibits alternating yet stable voltage behavior, with a maximum snubber voltage much lower as with a conventional DC-snubber. Three-phase inverters designed for switching frequencies of 10 kHz and 30 kHz demonstrate a potential increase in output power of 35% for non-optimized semiconductors and 59% for optimized MOSFETs. Furthermore, the introduced configuration is utilized to actively drive a small LC-filter, evaluating its applicability under constraints on maximum voltage slope. A dependency between snubber voltage and the timing of filter pulses has been identified. In comparison to a state-of-the-art IGBT setup with similar output power, a reduction in switching losses by a factor of 20 was observed, accompanied by a concurrently lower voltage slope. However, the time constants of the snubber circuit limit the minimization of the LC-filter

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Characterization and Modeling of the Threshold Voltage Instability in p-Gate GaN HEMTs

The p-gate GaN HEMT is a modern power semiconductor transistor capable of overcoming the switching speed limitation of conventional Silicon-based technologies. However, the GaN HEMT is a fairly new technology that still suffers undesired effects that affect its operation. Nowadays, the most prominent effects are the shift and instability of the threshold voltage Vth, caused by capacitive coupling into the gate stack as well as trapping, accumulation, and depletion of carriers. In this study, an experimental characterization of the Vth behavior is executed and subsequently used to develop a physically-based compact model. For this purpose, a custom setup is developed capable of high-resolution transient measurements for pulse lengths ranging from 100 ns up to 100 s. Utilizing the setup, commercially available state-of-the-art p-gate GaN HEMTs are investigated, showing a Vth shift and instability that appears relevant up to the nominal operation. The experimental results show that the drain-source voltage VDS yields a Vth shift, which, when applied for long durations (e.g., during off-state), leads to an additional Vth instability. The gate-source voltage VGS also yields significant Vth instabilities, which correlate with the VDS-induced effects. Furthermore, the driving conditions causing an impact on Vth appear to also correlate with the devices’ short-circuit capability and degradation. However, no available models cover the Vth behavior, which is necessary to predict their impact and reliability concerns. Consequently, a compact model is developed based on the surface potential for the drain path, extended by the conduction mechanisms covering the gate path. Finally, the Vth shift is modeled based on capacitive coupling into the gate, while for the Vth instabilities, a possible implementation is exemplified for the impact of VDS
