Geroch group for Einstein spaces and holographic integrability

    Get PDF
We review how Geroch’s reduction method is extended from Ricci-flat to Einstein spacetimes. The Ehlers–Geroch SL(2,R) group is still present in the three-dimensional sigma-model that captures the dynamics, but only a subgroup of it is solution-generating. Holography provides an alternative three-dimensional perspective to integrability properties of Einstein’s equations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. These properties emerge as conditions on the boundary data (metric and energy–momentum tensor) ensuring that the hydrodynamic derivative expansion be resummed into an exact four-dimensional Einstein geometry. The conditions at hand are in- variant under a set of transformations dubbed holographic U-duality group. The latter fills the gap left by the Ehlers–Geroch group in Einstein spaces, and allows for solution-generating maps mixing e.g. the mass and the nut charge

Covariant Galilean versus Carrollian hydrodynamics from relativistic fluids

International audienceWe provide the set of equations for non-relativistic fluid dynamics on arbitrary, possibly time-dependent spaces, in general coordinates. These equations are fully covariant under either local Galilean or local Carrollian transformations, and are obtained from standard relativistic hydrodynamics in the limit of infinite or vanishing velocity of light. All dissipative phenomena such as friction and heat conduction are included in our description. Part of our work consists in designing the appropriate coordinate frames for relativistic spacetimes, invariant under Galilean or Carrollian diffeomorphisms. The guide for the former is the dynamics of relativistic point particles, and leads to the Zermelo frame. For the latter, the relevant objects are relativistic instantonic space-filling branes in Randers–Papapetrou backgrounds. We apply our results for obtaining the general first-derivative-order Galilean fluid equations, in particular for incompressible fluids (Navier–Stokes equations) and further illustrate our findings with two applications: Galilean fluids in rotating frames or inflating surfaces and Carrollian conformal fluids on two-dimensional time-dependent geometries. The first is useful in atmospheric physics, while the dynamics emerging in the second is governed by the Robinson–Trautman equation, describing a Calabi flow on the surface, and known to appear when solving Einstein’s equations for algebraically special Ricci-flat or Einstein spacetimes

Boundary multi-trace deformations and OPEs in AdS/CFT correspondence

We argue that multi-trace deformations of the boundary CFT in AdS/CFT correspondence can arise through the OPE of single-trace operators. We work out the example of a scalar field in AdS_5 with cubic self interaction. By an appropriate reparametrization of the boundary data we are able to deform the boundary CFT by a marginal operator that couples to the conformal anomaly. Our method can be used in the analysis of multi-trace deformations in N=4 SYM where the OPEs of various single-trace operators are known. We argue that multi-trace deformations of the boundary CFT in AdS/CFT correspondence can arise through the OPE of single-trace operators. Dynamics of Finite-Temperature CFTs from OPE Inversion Formulas

We apply the operator product expansion inversion formula to thermal two-point functions of bosonic and fermionic conformal field theories in general odd dimensions. This allows us to analyze in detail the operator spectrum of these theories. We find that nontrivial thermal conformal field theories arise when the thermal mass satisfies an algebraic transcendental equation that ensures the absence of an infinite set of operators from the spectrum. The solutions of these gap equations for general odd dimensions are in general complex numbers and follow a particular pattern. We argue that this pattern unveils the large-N vacuum structure of the corresponding theories at zero temperature. We apply the OPE inversion formula to thermal two-point functions of bosonic and fermionic CFTs in general odd dimensions. Noncritical M-theory and the Gross–Neveu model in 2+1 dimensions

AbstractWe point out a nontrivial connection between the model proposed by Hořava and Keeler as a candidate for noncritical M-theory and the Gross–Neveu model with fermionic fields obeying periodic boundary conditions in 2+1 dimensions. Specifically, the vacuum energy of the former is identified with the large-N free-energy of the latter up to an overall constant. This identification involves an appropriate analytic continuation of the subtraction point in noncritical M-theory, which is related to the volume of the Liouville dimension. We show how the world-sheet cosmological constant may be obtained from the Gross–Neveu model. At its critical point, which is given in terms of the golden mean, the values of the vacuum energy and of the cosmological constant are 4/5 and 2/5 of the corresponding values at infinite string coupling constant

    dS/CFT correspondence on a brane

We study branes moving in an AdS Schwarzschild black hole background. When the brane tension exceeds a critical value, the induced metric on the brane is of FRW type and asymptotically de Sitter. We discuss the relevance of such configurations to dS/CFT correspondence. When the black hole mass reaches a critical value that depends on the brane tension, the brane interpolates in the infinite past and future between a dS space and a finite space of zero Hubble constant. This corresponds to a cosmological evolution without a Big Bang or a Big Crunch. Moreover, the central charge of the CFT dual to the dS brane enters the Cardy-Verlinde formula that gives the entropy of the thermal CFT dual to the bulk AdS black hole

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
