Putting a social psychological spotlight on economic inequality
Societal inequality is one of the defining issues of our time. The last decade has seen a marked increase in public consciousness around income inequality, in response to both major economic turmoil and a growing body of research that spells out some of the ways in which living in unequal societies does us harm. However, somewhat lacking in this discourse so far is an understanding of the ways in which income inequality changes the psychological underpinnings of our behavior and thereby affects our social lives and the fabric of society. In this chapter, we argue that social psychology has a great deal to offer those who seek this understanding, not only in terms of our theories and capacity to bridge the macro- and micro-levels but also in terms of our methodologies. We also present an overview of the contributions by researchers at the forefront of the application of social psychological approaches to inequality that this volume contains. We finish with a call to action: researching the social psychological processes that drive the effects of inequality is a timely and important endeavor, and is essential if we are to work to achieve a more positive future

Clinical Outcome of Penetrating Keratoplasty in Patients 5 Years or Younger: Peters Anomaly Versus Sclerocornea
Purpose:To investigate and compare the clinical outcome of primary penetrating keratoplasty in pediatric patients with Peters anomaly and sclerocornea.Methods:Medical records of 20 eyes of 18 patients with Peters anomaly or sclerocornea who underwent primary penetrating keratoplasty when they were 5 years or younger were reviewed. The survival rates and median survival times of corneal grafts were evaluated to determine the surgical outcome. Demographics of patients, the preoperative characteristics of recipient eyes, surgical procedures, causes of graft failure, and postoperative complications were analyzed to identify the factors affecting graft survival.Results:A total of 20 penetrating keratoplasties were performed in 18 patients. Eight patients had Peters anomaly, and 10 patients had sclerocornea. Overall, 50% of corneal grafts survived during the follow-up of 92.7 10 months. The graft survival was 65% at 6 months and remained 50% at 12 months, 2 years, and 5 years after surgery. The mean survival time and survival rate were significantly different between patients with Peters anomaly and those with sclerocornea (the survival time, 135.6 +/- 17.9 vs. 36.4 +/- 16.1 months, P = 0.014; the survival rate, 87.5% vs. 25.0%, P = 0.02). The presence of opacity or vascularization in the limbus and in the peripheral cornea and the diameter of the recipient cornea were significantly correlated with graft failure.Conclusions:Penetrating keratoplasty in patients who were 5 years or younger had an excellent surgical outcome in patients with Peters anomaly, whereas the graft survival was poor in patients with sclerocornea.N

High-throughput in vitro processing of human primary microRNA by the recombinant microprocessor
© 2021 The Author(s)We describe a protocol to conduct a high-throughput in vitro processing assay, using 1,881 human primary microRNAs (pri-miRNAs) and recombinant Microprocessor complex, followed by deep sequencing library generation. This comprehensive approach allows the mapping of cleavage sites and the measurement of processing efficiency of a large number of substrates simultaneously. Our protocol is readily modifiable to investigate the effects of chemicals and regulatory proteins.
