Face-maker : the negotiation between screen performance, extra-filmic persona and conditions of employment within the career of Peter Lorre

    No full text
Peter Lorre often described his acting as merely "face-making". This disparaging attitude is reflected within critiques which read the life of Peter Lorre as a tragic narrative of wasted opportunities and his career as a screen performer as restricted by the nature of his employment in studio-era Hollywood. Working in the United States, he was unable to escape from the notoriety of his first major role in the German film, M (1931), or from the murderous persona that evolved from his portrayal of a psychopathic serial killer. His status as an emigre positioned him as a European "artist" whose talent was misused by American filmmaking practices which typecast the actor in line with his nefarious public image. This thesis proposes to investigate the accuracy of these perceptions which approach the actor via a binary split between "person" and "persona". It will offer an alternative methodology for analysing the career of the screen actor which recognises that persona-based analyses can obscure complex negotiations between performance, image and the conditions of employment. Rather than attempting to reveal the "real" Peter Lorre behind the image, the context of Lorre's mutable position as an employee within the Hollywood industry and the misconstrued association between his screen labour and his public persona will be examined. The creative agency of the actor will also be examined in order to question Lorre's definition of himself as "face-maker" whose work was reliant upon performative gimmicks. This alternative approach to the screen actor will be pursued through a chronological investigation of Lorre's professional labour. Also necessary are an exploration of the features of Lorre's persona and an understanding of the role played by other media in the construction of this public image. My methodology will combine close textual analysis of Lorre's screen performances, archival research into the terms of his employment and extensive analysis of promotional discourses pertaining to the actor throughout his career. My historiography of Lorre will consider the relationship between the actor and a number of his employers to suggest that conditions of employment help to shape screen performance. Lorre's status as a "face-maker" will also be challenged through a demonstration of the actor's use of complex performative techniques within his film work. This thesis will demonstrate the limitations of interpreting Lorre's career as Hollywood's mismanagement of a problematic performer. Instead, his career can be considered indicative of industrial strategies that exist between acting labour, promotional personas and employers. One consequence of my research is the reevaluation of Lorre's persona as "extra-filmic" and his career as "transmedial". As such, this thesis highlights how the significant labour of a screen performer can potentially become superseded by the personas used by employers to promote actors away from the cinema screen

The Nature of the Relationships between Social Networks, Interpersonal Trust, Management Support, and Knowledge Sharing

Purpose – Past research has shown that, by implementing knowledge sharing, an organisation can maintain its long-term competitive advantage. Hence, this research will explore the nature of the relationships between social networks, interpersonal trust, management support, and knowledge sharing. Methodology/approach – In order to achieve the above purpose, semi-structured interviews were used to gather qualitative data. Interviewee participants included top and middle managers and frontline employees. The total number of participants included in the research was 25, equally representing five companies. The core business of all the companies was large-scale manufacturing. A grounded theory approach was used to analyse the data, augmented by the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software, Nvivo. Findings – The results reveal that social networks facilitate knowledge sharing in diverse ways. These ways are: the use of multiple communication styles, brainstorming and problem solving, learning and teaching, training, employee rotation, and consultation. In addition, the data from the interviews suggests that, through various factors, the level of interpersonal trust, influences the extent to which employees are willing to share knowledge. These factors are organisational, relational, and individual factors. Furthermore, this study shows that both middle and top managers can play significant roles in facilitating knowledge sharing between employees. These roles are: encouragement of participation in decision-making, provision of recognition, breaking down of barriers, building up of teams, providing training or assigning others to do training, encouragement of training, communication, learning, putting knowledge into practice in the form of processes, and movement of employees. Research contributions – Six models were developed from the qualitative analysis of the field data. The brainstorming and problem solving model identifies various steps for brainstorming and problem solving which influence social networks and knowledge sharing. The model of learning and teaching explains how social networks can be built based on the receivers’ levels of knowledge, namely, the novice, competent, expert, and proficient levels. The model of factors influencing social networks and knowledge sharing illustrates various factors. These are: using multiple communication strategies, brainstorming and problem solving, learning and teaching, training, employee rotation, and consultation. The model of factors influencing interpersonal trust describes three factors for achieving such trust: organisational, relational, and individual factors. This model also elaborates on three factors that negatively influence interpersonal trust. These are division between departments, team conflict, and a sense of vulnerability. The model of the role of management teams in encouraging participation in decision-making elaborates on levels of decision-making among employees and the way in which knowledge flows between top and middle management and frontline employees. The integrative model deciphers the relationships between social networks, interpersonal trust, management support, openness, and knowledge sharing. In addition, the relationships between each area of emphasis and knowledge sharing are included in the model. Based on this model, a survey questionnaire was developed. These models provide new insights into the relationships between social networks, interpersonal trust, management support, and knowledge sharing. By applying these models to appropriate field situations, both practitioners and academics may be able to improve current practices relating to how knowledge is shared and evolves within organisations

The aim of this study was to investigate L2 reading (English) derived from texts presented in two different modes, as a linear text and as a hypertext, in order to verify possible differences in comprehension. The reason for such scrutiny resides in the fact that different standpoints can be found in the literature about the effects nonlinear texts can cause for processing, achieving coherence and thus, building a mental representation (Dillon, 1996; Smith, 1994; Charney, 1994, McKnight, Dillon & Richardson, 1993). In order to achieve the objectives proposed here, two texts, having similar characteristics, were designed and presented as hypertexts and as linear texts. Four research questions and hypotheses framed this investigation, and three different instruments were used to collect the data: recall of main propositions, comprehension questions and contradictions. In addition to these instruments, a modified version of the original Daneman and Carpenter's (1980) reading span test developed by Torres (2003) was applied, considering the assumption that there is a relationship between participants' performance and their working memory spans (Tomitch, 2005, Torres, 2003, Engle, Kane & Tuholsky, 1999; Daneman & Capenter, 1980). Forty-two participants from two nationalities (21 Brazilians and 21 Chinese) and from different universities (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Univerisdade Estadual de Maringá, and Loughborough University, UK) participated in this study. The results obtained signal to the fact that hypertexts might compromise comprehension, especially, for low-span participants. An unexpected outcome was obtained in relation to the Chinese participants who presented lower working memory spans compared to the Brazilian group, and therefore, presented lower performance. The broad conclusion achieved here is that different variables such as readers' working memory capacity, their first language, and the mode of text presentation may interfere in L2 reading, and each one of theses characteristics might hamper, in different ways, in the construction of a coherent mental representation

Do differences in the scale of irrigation projects generate different impacts on poverty and production?

This paper investigates differences in household production and consumption among small- and large-scale irrigators to assess whether the scale of an irrigation project increases household welfare in Mali. Much of the evidence of the impact of irrigation does not use counterfactual analysis to estimate such impact or distinguish between the scale of the irrigation projects to be evaluated. In the dataset collected by the author, both a large-scale irrigation project and small-scale projects are used to construct counterfactual groups. Propensity score matching is used to estimate the average treatment effect on the treated for small and large irrigators relative to nonirrigators on agricultural production, agricultural income, and consumption per capita. Small-scale irrigation has a larger effect on agricultural production and agricultural income than large-scale irrigation, but large-scale irrigation has a larger effect on consumption per capita. This suggests that market integration and nonfarm externalities are important in realizing gains in agricultural surplus from irrigation.Irrigation, program evaluation,

Zavrelimyia thryptica complex Figs 7A–G Diagnosis. Head yellowish brown, posterior margin slightly darker, gular sclerite not differentiated; maxillary palp (Fig. 7A) with RO located in distal half, L/W of basal segment about 4; antennal flagellum as in Fig. 7B, AR 2.6–2.7; mandible (Fig. 7C) with large projecting basal tooth and moderately developed accessory tooth; dorsomental region (Fig. 7D) with two small teeth at basal corners of M-appendage and weakly sclerotized bar projecting medially; ligula (Fig. 7E) with 5 subequal teeth set in straight row, base with small lateral projections; ventral cephalic setae and VP as in Fig. 7F, setae S9, S10 and SSm lie along oblique line to main axis, VP located posterolateral to S10; posterior parapod with one small angulate claw possessing inner tooth (Fig. 7G). Notes. The bifid claw and AR <3.0 would place it in the. Z. thryptica complex (Epler 2001). Some pupae were also collected and the enclosed pharate adults had no wing pattern which is characteristic of Z. thryptica. This species was originally described from California and it is possible that the species from our study sites may represent a separate eastern species. Ecology and habitat. Larvae are reported to occur in springs and spring fed streams and pools and littoral zone of the lakes (Epler 2001). In study streams they were very rare. Sampling sites. The larvae were collected from pools in Algonquin Park streams and from riffles in Muskoka District stream. Within the study streams they were less abundant than other Tanypodinae species.
