Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2008.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 47-48).We study the problem of scheduling jobs on a two-machine distributed server, where the job size distribution is heavy-tailed. We focus on two distributions, for which we prove that the performance of the optimal size-independent policy is asymptotically worse than that of a simple size-dependent policy. First, we consider a simple distribution where incoming jobs can only be of two possible sizes. The motivation is that with two largely different sizes, the simple distribution captures the important aspects of a heavy tail. Second, we extend to a bounded Pareto distribution, which has an actual heavy tail. For both cases, we analyze the performance with regards to slowdown (waiting time divided by job size) for several size-independent and size-dependent policies. We see that the size-dependent policies perform better, and then go on to prove that even the best size-independent policy cannot achieve the same performance. We conclude that as we increase the variance of our job size distribution, the gap between size-independent and size-dependent policies grows.by John Nham.M.Eng

Disparate requirements for the Walker A and B ATPase motifs ofhuman RAD51D in homologous recombination

In vertebrates, homologous recombinational repair (HRR) requires RAD51 and five RAD51 paralogs (XRCC2, XRCC3, RAD51B, RAD51C, and RAD51D) that all contain conserved Walker A and B ATPase motifs. In human RAD51D we examined the requirement for these motifs in interactions with XRCC2 and RAD51C, and for survival of cells in response to DNA interstrand crosslinks. Ectopic expression of wild type human RAD51D or mutants having a non-functional A or B motif was used to test for complementation of a rad51d knockout hamster CHO cell line. Although A-motif mutants complement very efficiently, B-motif mutants do not. Consistent with these results, experiments using the yeast two- and three-hybrid systems show that the interactions between RAD51D and its XRCC2 and RAD51C partners also require a functional RAD51D B motif, but not motif A. Similarly, hamster Xrcc2 is unable to bind to the non-complementing human RAD51D B-motif mutants in co-immunoprecipitation assays. We conclude that a functional Walker B motif, but not A motif, is necessary for RAD51D's interactions with other paralogs and for efficient HRR. We present a model in which ATPase sites are formed in a bipartite manner between RAD51D and other RAD51 paralogs

Background: Machine learning technology has been demonstrated to be a very useful tool in current orthopedic research. Furthermore, machine learning has shown to be quite impactful in the field of arthroplasty solving many clinical and scientific problems, leading to greater utilization in retrospective studies. This current study aims to identify machine learning arthroplasty research and predict future hotspots. We hypothesize that the production of current scientific literature on machine learning will be produced by US-based national institutions and will have exponentially grown in the past 5 years. Methods: Machine learning arthroplasty publications between 1996 and 2023 were identified using the Web of Science Core Collection of Clarivate Analytics. Then bibliometric indicators were obtained and imported for further analysis with VOSviewer and Bibliometreix to identify previous and ongoing trends within this field. Results: The bibliometric sourcing identified a total of 235 documents that were associated with machine learning applications to arthroplasty. 34 countries published articles on the topic and the United States demonstrated to be the largest contributor. The year 2022 had the highest number of publications produced in a year, totaling 66 articles. A total of 405 institutions across the world had published articles, the most relevant institutions with the highest production were Harvard University and Harvard Medical School with 41 and 34 articles produced respectively. Kwon YM was the most productive author while Haeberle HS and Ramkumar PN are the most impactful based on h-index. Co-occurrence visualization and thematic map identified niche and major themes within the literature. Conclusions: Machine learning in arthroplasty research continues to show an increasing trend since 2021 with contributions from authors and institutions globally. United States institutions and authors are the leading contributors to machine learning applications in arthroplasty research. This study identifies previous, current, and developing trends within this field for future hotspot development

The 8th volume of the Vietnamese Chinese Yarning Literature Collection (Collected in Vietnam) had included a copy of the work Shi Cheng Shi Ji which archived by the Institute of Sino-Nom Studies with the archive number of A.l 123, and suggests that Phan Thanh Gian (1796-1867), who has his name written on the book, is actually not the author of this book, but an unknown envoy of the Tay Son dynasty who had also attended the trip to China. The academia has several discussion about the author of this work, one suggestion is it belongs to Nguyen De (1761 -1805) who had accompanied the Tay Son envoys; another suggestion is that the work was not created by one person at a time. By the results of fieldwork and searching evidence, we have discovered the envoy who is the real author of the Chinese written poems collection - Shi Cheng Shi Ji. This envoy is Nguyen The True, also known as Nguyen Viet Truc (1745-1807). In the first year of Jing Sheng era (1793), he had accompanied the chief ambassador Ngo Thoi Nham (1746-1803) and the deputy ambassador Nguyen Van Thai on the mission to China to report the funeral of the late king - Quang Trung - and seek the acknowledgment and crowning for the new king from the emperor of Qing
