Experiments in dynamic load balancing for parallel cluster computing

    No full text
In academic and industrial institutions, a shift of emphasis in High Performance Computing from parallel monolithes to clusters of high performance workstations is taking place. These loosely coupled parallel systems require new programming paradigms and environments that provide the user wit

Genuine and simulated suicide notes: An analysis of content

    No full text
The present study examined genuine and simulated suicide notes aiming to identify the measures of content that best differentiate between the two. Thirty-three genuine and thirty-three simulated suicide notes were content-analysed and data subjected to smallest space analysis (SSA), a Multidimensional Scaling Procedure. The core of all suicide notes was discovered to be constructed with the use of three variables: expressions of love, positive construction of partner and apologies. Furthermore, four different genuine suicide note themes (‘planned escape’, ‘negative affect and self-mitigation’, ‘positive affect and failed relationship’, ‘lack of self-acceptance’) and three simulated suicide note themes (‘escape’, ‘positive affect and self-blame’, ‘purposeless life’) were identified revealing that authentic suicide note themes were more internally consistent and clearer to interpret

Identification of a Nonlinear Cell Cycle System with Linear Models

    No full text
A mathematical model by Chen et al. representing the cell cycle of the budding yeast cell (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is used to simulate levels of 13 different cell biological variables. By using a linear systems approach on the generated data the goal is to identify the original equations of the mathematical model. Since this model is described by a nonlinear system the linear systems approach only gives correct estimations of the linear parts of the system, with one exception. A main issue thus becomes to identify which data that belongs to the linear equations and which does not. This problem is solved using two local linear models on different time intervals. Parameter estimations of coefficients from linear and time invariant equations should be the same over all time intervals

Generating efficient executable models for complex virtual experimentation with the Tornado kernel

    No full text
Virtual experimentation is a collective term that includes various model evaluation procedures such as simulation, optimization and scenario analysis. Given the complexity of the models used in these procedures, and the number of evaluations that is required to complete them, highly efficient model implementations are desired. Although water quality management is a domain in which complex virtual experimentation is often adopted, only relatively little attention has thus far been devoted to the automated generation of efficient executable models. This article reports on a number of promising results regarding executable model generation that were obtained in the scope of the Tornado kernel, using techniques such as equiv substitution and equation lifting. © IWA Publishing 2007.</p
