Early Ordovician terrane accretion along the Gondwanian margin of the East Antarctic Craton: new Pb/Pb titanite ages from the Tonalite Belt, North Victoria Land, Antarctica
Early Palaeozoic subduction of the palaeo-Pacific plate and terrane accretion along the palaeomargin of the East Antarctic Craton is well-documented in North Victoria Land, where the Tonalite Belt is a complex of synkinematic intrusions emplaced within the Lanterman–Murchison Shear Zone at the boundary between the Wilson Terrane and the allochthonous Bowers Terrane. Stepwise leaching Pb/Pb and U–Pb studies of titanite separates carried out on two well-foliated samples of tonalites yielded ages of deformation bracketed between 490 and 480 Ma with an isochron age of 480 ±13 Myr. Ar/Ar and K–Ar ages of 477 Myr in the metamorphic rocks of accreted terranes point to fast cooling and uplift after accretion. The new titanite ages, compared with a regional distribution of magmatic and metamorphic ages, indicate an early Ordovician age for terrane collision and amalgamation. As a consequence of collision, subduction shifted to an outward position along the palaeomargin of the East Antarctic Craton
I Blockbuch del fondo Pertusati. Storia di un viaggio senza ritorno in Il viaggio. Scoprire ed essere scoperti
Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense suffer the Napoleonic rule in Italy, and the Block Book’s story of Carlo Pertusati collection’s is one of the most tragic events in this period. These precious volumes were part of the constituent heritage of the cultural institution in Milan. During the Napoleonic looting of art in the early years of the Cisalpine Republic in Italy, these rare books were requisitioned by Napoleon’s commissioners and transferred to Paris. Thanks to the Restoration, most of the looted books were returned to the Braidense, with the exception of a few specific examples, including the precious Block Book of Pertusati collection
Structure of the Deep Freeze Range - Eisenhower Range of the Wilson Terrane (North Victoria Land Antarctica): emplacement of magmatic intrusions in the Early Palaeozoic deformed margin of the East Antarctic Craton
In North Victoria Land (Antarctica), the Wilson Terrane is a portion of the palaeomargin of the East
Antarctic Craton, deformed during the Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician Ross Orogeny. Crustal deformation,
from westward subduction of the palaeo Pacific plate and terrane accretion on this palaeomargin, gave rise to
the development of a transpressive fold belt and a wide magmatic arc. In the inner portion ofthe Wilson Terrane,
(Deep Freeze Range-Eisenhower Range) a large portion of this magmatic arc is made up of intrusions and dyke
systems. Intrusive rocks range from large unfoliated plutons to well foliated sheet intrusions emplaced in low
and medium-high grade metamorphic rocks respectively. Field and structural data on intrusive rocks and
metamorphic host rocks, coupled with parameters relative to deformation mechanism and magmatic processes
(crystallization and cooling) rates, make it possible to outline an episode of diffuse synkinematic magmatism
in the Wilson Terrane. The emplacement of intrusions in both the middle and upper crust was coeval and related
to the development of transpressional and transtensional structures along dextral strike-slip shear zones.
Furthermore the development of foliated or unfoliated fabrics is related to competition between rates of
deformation and magmatic processes, which is a function of the thermal state of the host rock
