    Tradução de poesia: Emily dickinson segundo a perspectiva tradutória de Augusto de Campos

    Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução, Florianópolis, 2014Esta dissertação, a partir da perspectiva teórica e prática de Augusto de Campos quanto à tradução de poesia, visa analisar sete de suas traduções dos poemas da norte-americana Emily Dickinson, publicadas na obra Emily Dickinson: não sou ninguém, em 2008. O trabalho foi dividido em três capítulos. O primeiro tratados principais elementos que constituem a poética de Dickinson, bem como das traduções brasileiras de suas obras. Como embasamento teórico foram utilizados Gilbert e Gubar (1984), Donoghue (1969), Sewall (1963) e Daghlian(1987), dentre outros autores. O segundo capítulo tem como objetivo apresentar Augusto de Campos como poeta e como tradutor, com ênfase nos seus comentários sobre tradução, visando compreender sua prática tradutória. O terceiro capítulo analisa as traduções de sete poemas de Dickinson realizadas por Augusto de Campos e busca identificar a relação entre a teoria e a prática do tradutor. Essa análise, de caráter discursivo, além do plano formal e sintático, se concentra no plano semântico dos textos, tendo em conta que não possui a pretensão de realizar qualquer tipo de julgamento prescritivo.Abstract: This dissertation, from the perspective theoretical and practical of Augusto de Campos about the poetry translation, analyzes seven of his translations of the North-American poet Emily Dickinson, published in the book "Emily Dickinson: não sou ninguém", in 2008. This work contains three chapters; the first presents the main elements that constitute the Dickinson's poetry, as well as the Brazilian translations of her poems. It has, as theoretical support, author slike: Gilbert and Gubar (1984), Donoghue (1969) Sewall (1963) and Daghlian(1987). The second chapter aims to approach the main remarks of Augusto,highlighting his activity as poet and as translator, aiming to understand his practice of translation. The third chapter analyses the Augusto's translations of seven poems of Dickinson and try to identify the relationship between the theory and the practice of the translator. This discursive, besides the formal and syntactic field focuses on the semantic field of the poems, without any kind of prescriptive judgment

O parâmetro teórico desta análise, o conceito do olhar masculino, é teorizado por Laura Mulvey no artigo "Prazer Visual e Cinema Narrativo" (1975) o qual critica a relação entre o olhar masculino e a imagem feminina do prazer visual moldado pela sociedade patriarcal. Através da crítica de Mulvey do prazer visual generizado em filmes, que pertence ao contexto do cinema clássico de Hollywood, articulo sua teoria em relação ao romance Wuthering Heights de Emily Brontë para examinar a dinâmica do olhar masculino em relação à personagem feminina Catherine. Este estudo teve também por objetivo analisar o quanto o paradigma teórico de Mulvey produzido para cinema poderia ser aplicado especificamente em um texto literário escrito no século XIX.The objective of this thesis is to present an analysis of whether Catherine's image has been shaped by the male gaze, how she contends with the three looks of the male gaze - the look of the characters, the look of the reader, and the look of the author - and finally, how the male gaze is broken. The theoretical parameter of this analysis, the concept of the male gaze, is theorized by Laura Mulvey in the article "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" (1975) which critiques the relation between the male gaze and the female image within the patriarchal molding of visual pleasure. Borrowing Mulvey's critique of the gendering of visual pleasure in films, which pertains to the context of classical Hollywood cinema, I have articulated her theory in relation to Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, to examine the dynamics of the male gaze regarding the female character, Catherine. This study also aimed at examing the extent to which Mulvey's theoretical paradigm produced for cinema could be articulated specifically in relation to a literary text written in the nineteenth century

    Apresenta-se a tradução inédita em português brasileiro de três poemas da escritora inglesa Emily Brontë (1818-1848). Mundialmente conhecida pelo seu único romance, Wuthering Heights (1847), Brontë deixou cerca de 200 poemas, os quais, entretanto, permaneceram à margem da fortuna crítica da autora, particularmente no Brasil. Considerando-se que a única tradução da poesia de Emily Brontë editada em livro, no Brasil, é a de Lúcio Cardoso — uma seleção de 33 poemas, publicada na década de 1940 pela José Olympio, sob o título de Vento da Noite, hoje editada pela Civilização Brasileira —, com as traduções aqui apresentadas, pretende-se contribuir, conquanto timidamente, para minimizar essa lacuna de mais de 160 poemas nunca vertidos para o português brasileiro.A translation of three poems by the English writer Emily Brontë (1818-1848), unpublished in Portuguese, is presented. Known worldwide for her only novel, Wuthering Heights (1847), Brontë also left us circa 200 poems. These, however, have been given a secondary place in the author\u27s critical fortune, particularly in Brazil. The only translation of Emily Brontë\u27s poetry published in Brazil is that of Lúcio Cardoso — a selection of 33 poems, published in the 1940s by José Olympio, under the title of Vento da Noite, edited nowadays by Civilização Brasileira. Considering this, with the translations presented here, we intend to contribute, albeit timidly, to minimize this gap of more than 160 poems never translated into Brazilian Portuguese

    EMDialog : bringing information visualization into the museum

    Digital interactive information displays are becoming more common in public spaces such as museums, galleries, and libraries. However, the public nature of these locations requires special considerations concerning the design of information visualization in terms of visual representations and interaction techniques. We discuss the potential for, and challenges of, information visualization in the museum context based on our practical experience with EMDialog, an interactive information presentation that was part of the Emily Carr exhibition at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. EMDialog visualizes the diverse and multi-faceted discourse about Emily Carr, a Canadian artist, with the goal to both inform and provoke discussion. It provides a visual environment that allows for exploration of the interplay between two integrated visualizations, one for information access along temporal, and the other along contextual dimensions. We describe the results of an observational study we conducted at the museum that revealed the different ways visitors approached and interacted with EMDialog, as well as how they perceived this form of information presentation in the museum context. Our results include the need to present information in a manner sufficiently attractive to draw attention and the importance of rewarding passive observation as well as both short and longer term information exploration.Peer reviewe

    Transatlantic Romanticism: The English Romantics and American Nineteenth−Century Poetic Tradition

    This thesis explores the Romantic origins of nineteenth-century American poetic tradition; it looks at the relationship between the English Romantics and major nineteenth-century American poets. My research focuses on the Romantic lines of continuity within nineteenth-century American poetry, identifying them as central to the representation of American cultural and literary identities. American poets shaped their art and national identity out of a Romantic interest in their native nature. My study particularly explores the diverse ways in which major American poets, of this time, reacted to, adapted and reformulated Romantic ideals of nature, literary creation, the mission of the poet and the aesthetic category of the sublime. It traces connections and dialogues between American poets and their Romantic predecessors, including Blake, Southey, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats and Shelley. This thesis is inspired by the strong and abiding academic interest in Romantic studies, and aims to advance new readings of nineteenth-century American poetry in a transatlantic literary and cultural context. It attempts to cover a wide range of nineteenth-century key poetic works in relation to Romantic visions, ideals and forms. Developing a chronological line of enquiry, my thesis highlights the paradox of writers seeking to establish an original, distinctive American literary canon while still heavily deriving ideas and techniques from other, non-American sources. An introductory chapter outlines the historical and cultural framework of the Anglo-American literary relationship, focussing on its sensibilities, tensions and affinities. Chapter two considers how Bryant and Longfellow reformulated the Romantic pastoral tradition in their representations of American landscape, which helped toward shaping a peculiar national poetic canon. Through examining Emerson’s poetic achievement in the light of the Romantic tradition, chapter three challenges Emersonian claims of originality and self-reliance. Chapter four addresses Whitman’s Romantic preoccupations and interests alongside his groundbreaking innovations manifested in his attitudes towards nature, human body and urban landscape as well as his experiments with poetic language and form. Chapter five attempts to interpret the seeming idiosyncrasy of Dickinson’s work in the light of the poet’s dialogues with her Romantic precursors. Above all, this study examines how Romanticism worked upon the minds and art of nineteenth-century American poets, aiming to provide refreshing interpretations of nineteenth-century American poetry in the context of the broader transatlantic Romantic tradition

    Do Members of the Public Have a ‘Right to Know’ about Similar Fact Evidence? The Emily Perry Story and the ‘Right to Know’ in the Context of a Fair Re-Trial

    In South Australia in 1981, an intriguing criminal trial took shape around Emily Perry who was charged with two counts of attempting to murder her husband with arsenic. Similar fact evidence about the deaths of a former husband, a de facto partner and a brother led to a jury finding her guilty of the attempted murder of her husband who denied any claim that she had tried to harm him. An appeal to the South Australian Court of Criminal Appeal on the basis that the previous deaths should not have been brought to the attention of the jury was unsuccessful but Emily Perry&rsquo;s case went all the way to the High Court of Australia. Her conviction was quashed and she was never re-tried. This article examines the dichotomy of an accused&rsquo;s right to a fair trial (and the rules of evidence that flow from that right) and the public&rsquo;s so-called &lsquo;right to know&rsquo; about a person charged with a serious offence. It posits the Perry case as an example of the opposing perspectives of lawyers and journalists, and explores the different narratives to which the case gave rise. The paper questions whether a fair re-trial for Emily Perry would ever have been possible after the vast media attention that it received. En 1981 en Australia Meridional se desarroll&oacute; un fascinante juicio criminal alrededor de Emily Perry, a quien se acus&oacute; de dos intentos de asesinar a su marido con ars&eacute;nico. Pruebas similares sobre las muertes de un esposo anterior, su pareja de hecho y su hermano llevaron al jurado a declararla culpable de intento de asesinato de su marido, quien rechaz&oacute; en sus declaraciones que ella hubiera tratado de hacerle da&ntilde;o. No prosper&oacute; una apelaci&oacute;n a la Corte de Apelaci&oacute;n Penal de Australia Meridional alegando que las muertes previas no deber&iacute;an haberse mencionado al jurado, pero el caso de Emily Perry sigui&oacute; su curso hasta el Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Australia.     Emily Dickinsonová a subverze puritánské tradice

    Emily Dickinson vyrůstala v náboženském prostředí, kde byl stále přítomný vliv novoanglického puritanismu. Navzdory tomu, že vyrůstala jako praktikující člen církve, později se rozhodla formálně do náboženského života nezapojit. Přesto byla neustále v kontaktu s náboženským diskurzem a hluboce přemítala o svém vztahu k božskému; kde náboženství vidělo jistoty, ona viděla otázky. To se odráží i v její poezii, která se zabývá náboženskými tématy, přemýšlí o možnostech posmrtného života a vyjadřuje pochybnosti o podstatě Boha. V této bakalářské práci jsou její život a poezie analyzovány skrze optiku tradice puritanismu Nové Anglie. Práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol. První a druhá kapitola se zaměřují na historicko-kulturní kontexty. První kapitola shrnuje americký puritanismus, Puritánský způsob vidění světa a všudypřítomnost vlivu puritanismu v Nové Anglii. V této kapitole je čerpáno převážně z prací Perryho Millera a Sacvana Bercovitche. Druhá kapitola je zaměřena na život Emily Dickinsonové a její interakce s tradicí puritanismu. Tato kapitola shrnuje její život s důrazem na momenty, kdy přišla do styku s dědictvím puritanismu, a zkoumá některé kritické přístupy k poezii Dickinsonové, analyzující vliv puritanismu na její dílo. Tato shrnutí se opírají o práce předních současných odborníků na dílo...Emily Dickinson grew up in a religious community where the influence of New England Puritanism was still present. Despite being raised as a practicing church member, she later chose not to formally join the Church. She was, nevertheless, continually in contact with religious discourse and struggled with her relationship to the divine; where the Church saw certainties, she saw questions. This is reflected in her poetry, which engages with religious themes, ponders on the possibilities of the afterlife and expresses doubts about the true nature of God. In this thesis, her life and poetry are analysed through the lens of the Puritan tradition of New England. The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapters one and two focus on the historical-cultural contexts. The first chapter summarises American Puritanism, the Puritan worldview and its continuous presence in New England, drawing mostly from the works of Perry Miller and Sacvan Bercovitch. The second chapter focuses on Emily Dickinson's life and her interactions with the Puritan tradition. This chapter analyses Dickinson's life, with emphasis on different moments when she came into contact with the Puritan heritage, and it discusses some critical approaches to Dickinson's poetry, which deal with her rendering of the Puritan heritage.     Scaled experimental models of gravitational collapse: analysis of structures formed during creation and retreat of erosional scarps

    This thesis presents the results of scaled experimental models of gravitational collapse, the non-catastrophic failure of an oversteepened cliff. The main modeling material is wet clay, which simulates typical lithified, upper-crustal rocks; the nature-to-model scaling factor for size is ~105. Silicone polymer in one model simulates a highly ductile layer (e.g., salt). In all models, scarp creation involves gradual downcutting along a vertical surface. In the standard model (6 cm of clay with a density of 1.60 g/cm3), faults lengthen and link to form a main normal fault that dips towards and strikes parallel to the erosional scarp; the zone of deformation is narrow. Cross sections of the standard model show that the main fault is listric, most minor faults are listric and dip toward the erosional scarp, shallow layers dip toward the scarp whereas deep layers dip away from the scarp, and the base of the scarp bows out. Fault-heave analyses show that differential iii extension (increasing with depth and with proximity to the erosional scarp) accounts for these features. Geometric models of listric faults do not incorporate differential extension, and thus do not predict the layer geometries observed in the standard model. Models with stronger (denser) clay require taller scarp heights to initiate gravitational collapse. In the model with silicone polymer, deformation (conjugate faults and grabens) is distributed over a larger area compared to the standard model. Faults that form during scarp retreat (lateral removal of clay) evolve similarly to faults formed during scarp creation. A preliminary model with a curved erosional scarp yields a deformation zone that closely parallels the scarp. The Statfjord field (Norway), the Sirikit field (Thailand), and the Fairy Dell sea cliffs (Dorset, England) share some similarities with the standard model: listric faults that strike parallel to and dip towards the erosional scarp and layers rotated away from the erosional scarp; however, they do not have layers rotated toward the erosional scarp. Deformation in Canyonlands National Park is similar to that in the model with silicone polymer: conjugate faults and grabens are related to flow of a ductile unit toward the erosional scarp.M.S.includes bibliographical referencesIncludes abstractby Emily Rose Poorvi

    The research focuses on studying the main threads detected in the prose work of the writer Emily Santa-Cruz. In the first place, the works of the author whose principal thread is her native city, Córdoba, will be analyzed. Along with this unifying thread, other elements –objects, literary devices, or characters– that act as a link in these and other works of this hidden Andalusian writer will also be delved into. This study will also address the works in which Emily Santa-Cruz cultivated the genre of detective fiction so as to examine, likewise, the common threads they share, among which are the figure of the main character and the didactic role that all the stories assume. With this analysis it is intended to bring this author to the fore and explore the common elements with which she wanted to interrelate much of her production in order to give unity to her work.El estudio se centra en analizar los principales ejes narrativos detectados en la obra en prosa de la escritora Emily Santa-Cruz. En primer lugar, se estudiarán las obras de la autora, cuyo hilo conductor cardinal es su ciudad natal, Córdoba. Junto a este eje narrativo se profundizará también en otros elementos −objetos, recursos literarios o personajes− que actúan como enlace en estas y otras obras nacidas de la pluma de esta escritora andaluza oculta. Este estudio abordará también las obras en las que Emily Santa-Cruz cultivó el género policíaco para examinar, asimismo, los ejes narrativos que comparten, entre los que se encuentran la figura del personaje protagonista y el carácter didáctico que asumen todos los relatos.
