    c-Myc represses the murine Nramp I promoter

    The Nramp1 (natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 1) gene modulates the growth of intracellular pathogens and encodes a divalent cation transporter within lysosomes/late endosomes of macrophages. Nramp1 modulates the cytoplasmic iron pool. Wu, Polack and Dalla-Favera [(1999) Science 283, 676–679] showed reciprocal control of H-ferritin and IRP2 by c-Myc, and suggest that c-Myc regulates genes to increase cytoplasmic iron. A role for c-Myc in Nramp1 regulation was evaluated. Co-transfection studies show that c-Myc represses Nramp1 promoter function. Five non-canonical Myc-max binding sites (E-box) identified within the Nramp1 5´-flanking sequence are not responsible for the inhibitory effects of c-Myc on Nramp1 expression. An initiator(s) adjacent to the transcription-initiation site is a candidate for the inhibition observed. Results are consistent with a role for Nramp1 removing iron from the cytosol and antagonizing c-Myc function

    Locating the spawning grounds of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba is key to understanding their population dynamics and managing the commercial krill fishery. In the shelf waters of the Antarctic Peninsula where krill and their fishery are concentrated, a recent relaxation of fishing quotas has meant that locally successful spawning grounds could become increasingly targeted. This study revisits the existing paradigm that in summer, larger adult krill migrate awayfrom these shelf-based fishing grounds, out towards oceanic waters to spawn off the shelf break (>1000 m). Our findings support a seasonal on-shelf division of adult krill, with smaller krill closer inshore. However, contrary to current understanding, our results suggest that 85% of the largest and most fecund >50 mm krill remain on-shelf during the summer spawning season. All adults(>30 mm) were strongly concentrated over the shelf throughout the whole spring–summer–autumn transition, with no evidence for any summer redistribution off-shelf. The Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) has strong on-shelf–off-shelf gradients in chlorophyll a and sea surface temperature,and based on generalised additive models, our study suggests that the high food requirement of adult krill, coupled with an oligotrophic off-shelf environment, contributes to the distribution of krill observed at the Antarctic Peninsula. The concentration of large, nutritious krill over the shelf throughout the season may be advantageous to land-based predators but raises concern for the management of fisheries that are becoming increasingly concentrated within the key adult krill habitat along the northern shelf of the WAP

Kramers-Kronig analyses of the polarized lattice-vibrational reflection spectra of LaF3,CeF3,PrF3LaF_{3}, CeF_{3}, PrF_{3} and NdF3NdF_{3}, taken as a close function of temperature between 55^{\circ} and 600K600^{\circ} K, have led to an assignment of the crystal symmetry of the tysonite structure and have provided an assessment of the strength of non-linear interactions in these materials

However solid solutions of (Kx:Rb1x)I(K_{x}:Rb_{1-x})I appear to exhibit two modes over part of the composition range. These results have been observed directly in transmission measurements of evaporated thin films and in reflection of pressed powders as a function of temperature. Several models have been applied to describe the observed frequency variation with composition, and the conditions necessary for the existence of local and gap modes will be discussed

    Recourse against Judgments in the Netherlands

    In the 1980s, the Netherlands witnessed the start of a comprehensive programme of reform in the fields of judicial organisation and procedure. The reform programme consists of three stages, of which the first has now been completed. This has, amongst other things, resulted in the consolidation of several administrative procedures which were formerly adjudicated by different judicial bodies, in the Arrondissementsrechtbank. Consequently, the Arrondissementsrechtbank has obtained extensive administrative jurisdiction together with its jurisdiction in civil and criminal cases. As part of the reforms in the second stage, a bill has been submitted to Parliament which contains changes in the court structure. It is proposed to abolish the Kantongerecht and to reallocate its jurisdiction to the Arrondissementsrechtbank, transforming the latter court into a general first-instance court. In addition, the bill contains changes in the Code of Civil Procedure. In the present report the author discusses the current situation January 1998
