Integrative systems medicine approaches to identify molecular targets in lymphoid malignancies
Although survival rates for lymphoproliferative disorders are steadily increasing both in the US and in Europe, there is need for optimizing front-line therapies and developing more effective salvage strategies. Recent advances in molecular genetics have highlighted the biological diversity of lymphoproliferative disorders. In particular, integrative approaches including whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, and transcriptome or RNA sequencing have been instrumental to the identification of molecular targets for treatment. Herein, we will discuss how genomic, epigenomic and proteomic approaches in lymphoproliferative disorders have supported the discovery of molecular lesions and their therapeutic targeting in the clinic
On the Productive Use of Hegemony (Laclau, Hall, Chatterjee)
The concept of Hegemony is central to Gramsci's thought, but it has been also the main vector of his fortune around the world. This article maps some uses of this Gramscian concept from the point of view of its political productivity insted of its philological fidelity to the author. The concept of hegemony, in these examples, shows its ability to produce political innovation

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors treatment in the Imatinib era. The role of fair indication

2012 Apr;67(2):165-73. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors treatment in the Imatinib era. The role of fair indication. Vendettuoli M1, Pironi D, Pontone S, Panarese A, La Gioia G, Arcieri S, Romani AM, Palazzini G, Filippini A. Author information Abstract AIM: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. Surgery remains the elective treatment. We retrospectively compared two group of patients, who underwent surgery for GIST before and after Imatinib advent in order to analyze the recurrence and survival rate. METHODS: Two patient groups who underwent surgery for GIST, from January 1997 to December 2002 (Pre-Imatinib group) and from January 2003 to December 2008 (Post-Imatinib group) were compared. Patients were evaluated on the base of gender, age, clinical manifestations, primary location and metastasis positivity, tumor size, mitotic index, immunoreactivity for CD117 and the outcome, including date of death. RESULTS: In the Pre-IM group only one patient died for prostate cancer, 12 months after operation, the other died because of GIST with a 24.6 months of median survival rate (range 15-51). In the remaining 12 patients the median follow up period was 55 months (range 6-152 months). In the Post-IM group the mean follow up was 50.7 months (range 26-74) and they are still being assessed for oncological as well as surgical treatment. CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis and radical resection remain the standard of cure for GISTs. To date, the use of Imatinib lead to its utilization as adjuvant and neo-adjuvant therapy in adults. Our experience suggests that there is a correlation between the mutational status of KIT and clinical outcome. These aspects should be explored for targeted therapy that can effectively combine biological therapy to surgery. PMID: 22487918 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLIN

It is known to be formed mainly in starch-rich foods, cooked or processed at high temperatures (above 120°C) in the absence of moisture, via the Maillard reaction when a reduced carbohydrate (glucose and fructose) combines with the amino acid asparagine. Moreover, evidence suggests that acrylamide may also form from the degradation of proteins and fats.
Acrylamide is present in a large variety of commonly consumed products such as coffee, potato-derived products, and cereal-derived products, including breakfast cereals, bread, and biscuits. Except for boiling, acrylamide may form with the most common cooking methods e.g., grilling, baking, roasting, and frying. Additionally, several chemical and physical factors, namely pH, can affect acrylamide formation during food cooking or processing. By improving our understanding of how to modify these factors, it is possible to significantly reduce acrylamide formation in cooked and processed foods, thereby mitigating potential health risks associated with acrylamide.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Yin and Yang of non-neuronal α7-nicotinic receptors in inflammation and autoimmunity
The alkaloid nicotine, a major addictive component of tobacco, exerts anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating activities on multiple cell types, such as T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, mononuclear phagocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes, in lung, spleen, liver, kidney and gastrointestinal tract. In addition, nicotine may blunt pro-inflammatory cytokine release, with prominent effects on T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th17 cytokines. The nonneuronal alpha 7-nicotinic cholinergic receptors are a primary target for nicotine through the JAK2 and STAT3/NF-kappa B pathways, ultimately mediating the inhibition of pro-inflammatory gene transcription. The present paper reviews the growing evidence in favor of detrimental as well as beneficial effects of nicotine and other alpha 7-nicotininc receptor agonists in pre-clinical models of organ-specific and systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. These data may portend favorable implications for the targeted treatment of chronic and debilitating human disorders, such as diabetes, arthritis, asthma and inflammatory bowel disease, with alpha 7-selective ligands
Introduction
Through a reading of all the articles collected in the monographic section of «Scienza & Politica», this introduction shows how "cooperation" is a multifaceted concept, crisscrossed by contradictions and ambivalences. The author provides a brief historical and political analysis of the concept of cooperation, stressing its importance in contemporary debates and pointing out both the most productive and problematic aspects of the recent development of a political theory of cooperation
