Digital reconstructions of picture galleries as art historical method: The virtual museum at the Royal Palace in Stockholm

    No full text
We are now witnessing a wave of research using digital tools to create 3D reconstructions of buildings, exhibitions, and objects. We would therefore like to critically discuss the scholarly value of reconstructions. What are we learning? Which problems are solved? What new knowledge can be gained? These are questions posed from a background of history of display and a pilot study in which we are reconstructing two hangings in a gallery at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. We conclude that an immersive 3D reconstruction can give new insights into narratives and hierarchies of art displays. Our model, made with the game engine Unity and the software Virtual Museum, allows us to show and analyze historical changes and developments as well as aspects as eye-lines, visibility and visitors flow to a comparably low cost. This way an immersive 3D-reconstruction can be used not only for pedagogical visualizations, but become an effective research tool

How Many Danish Jobs Can (Potentially) Be Done Elsewhere?

    No full text
This paper employs a new survey technique to arrive at estimates of the proportion of jobs with the characteristic that they can be performed elsewhere than currently, in particular in other countries. The results from the survey which was carried out in November 2008 indicate that the proportion of current jobs with offshorability characteristics in Denmark is in the 20 to 30 percent range. Danish jobs that could potentially be carried out elsewhere are primarily found in the services sector (financial and business services) and they are typically performed by employees from the middle of the wage distributionJobs; offshorability; outsourcing

Foreign Ownership Wage Premia in Emerging Economies: Evidence from Czech Republic

    No full text
In this paper we examine the relationship between wages, labour productivity and ownership using a linked employer-employee dataset covering a large fraction of the Czech labour market in 2006. We distinguish between different origins of ownership and study wage and productivity differences. The raw wage differential between foreign and domestically owned firms is about 24 percent. The empirical analysis is carried out on both firm- and individual-level data. A key finding is that industry, region, and notably human capital explain only a small part of the foreign-domestic ownership wage differential. Both white and blue collar workers as well as skilled and unskilled employees obtain a foreign ownership wage premium. Foreign ownership premia are more prevalent in older and less technologically advanced firms. Joint estimation of productivity and wage equations show that, controlling for human capital, the difference in productivity is about twice as large as the wage differential. The results indicate that the international firms share their rents with their employeesForeign ownership; wages; productivity

Corporate visioning : a cross comparison between SMEs in Scotland and Sweden

The business environment of today is characterised as both dynamic and complex, and many corporations face fierce competition on all fronts. To deal with strategic planning in this businesses environment has become difficult and visioning has been argued to be one approach forward. Numerous prescriptive models on how to develop visions have identified in the literature, but studies on how corporations actually develop visions are few. This study therefore aims to describe the process of how small and medium sized firms develop visions. This study compares small and medium sized firms in Scotland and Sweden on how they developed their visions. The study adopted a survey methodology where 210 firms of different sizes were contacted in each country. The response rate was 24,3% in Scotland and 47,6 % in Sweden. The main findings of this study are that the process of developing visions was rather diverse, some firms used short process, whereas in other firms the vision developed over time. In general it was an emergent process. The firms used many of the techniques and looked at factors found in the management literature, but maybe not in the way as prescribed by vision methodologies. In general the vision process was leader driven or developed by top management, but in some cases it was developed by a wider involvement. Few differences could be found between how Scottish and Swedish firms develop their visions, except that the Swedish firms to a higher degree had a developed vision. The major finding of this study is that the bigger the firm the more likely they are to have developed a vision, used management techniques and had wider involvement in the process
