TRADITION, QUALITY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY IN HUNGARIAN SPICE PEPPER (Capsicum annuum L.) BREEDING
Spice pepper production has a history of almost 300 years in the southern part of
Hungary. In this study the results of two biotechnological improvements are summarized.
Anther and isolated microspore culture techniques were improved to release haploid and
doubled haploid (DH) lines for spice pepper breeding. Both the anther and isolated
microspore culture methods were successfully used in spice pepper haploid production.
Microspore culture- derived structures were analysed to identify their different parts.
Green plantlets were regenerated from embryos derived from both anther and microspore
cultures. Their doubled haploid analogues were integrated into Hungarian spice pepper
hybrid seed breeding programmes. One hybrid, Sláger, was released as a new genotype for
spice pepper production in 2008 and two hybrid candidates (Délibáb and Bolero) are now
being tested in official trials
EFFECTS OF AGRONOMIC VARIABLES AND HINERITANCE ON AROMATIC COMPONENTS IN BASIL AND CHILI PEPPER
This PhD Thesis focuses on how aroma profile in crops is affected by agronomic and genetic variables. In the first chapter we considered the effects of salt stress on main morphological and physiological traits of two cultivars of sweet basil (Genovese and Napoletano) Specifically, we focused on compositional changes in aroma profile and their possible significance in adaptation and tolerance to the oxidative stress.
In the second chapter, we considered the aroma profile of two chilli pepper species, Habanero (Capsicum chinenese) and Jalapeño (Capsicum Annuum), at different stages of maturity. Moreover, preliminary results of genetic mapping process were introduced.

Androgenesis induction in microspore culture of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)
Isolated microspore culture experiments were
carried out in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) F1
hybrid genotypes. In the first experiment, four culture media
(W14, B5, MS and NLN) were compared to test their
effectiveness in inducing the formation of microsporederived
structures in two genotypes. The experiments
revealed the superiority of B5 medium. In the second
experiment, the effects of different ratios of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic
acid (2,4-D) (0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 mg l-1) and
kinetin (0, 0.2 and 0.5 mg l-1) were also investigated in B5
medium with two genotypes. The effect of growth regulators
were investigated on the production of microsporederived
calli and embryo-like structures (ELSs), the ratio of
the two and plant regeneration (number of regenerated
plantlets) in microspore culture. The histological experiments
revealed the differences between the microsporederived
ELSs and calli. The most promising results were
obtained on the investigated parameters in the presence of
0.1 mg l-1 2,4-D and 0.2 mg l-1 kinetin producing the
highest number of plantlets in both genotypes tested. In the
response of 11 genotypes, the androgenesis induction was
successful in each sweet pepper genotypes tested using the
best basic medium and growth regulators combination.
In case of 11 genotypes, the number of ELSs ranged from
20 to 100/Petri dish (an average of 48.1 ELS/Petri dish),
while the number of green plantlets varied from 0 to 8
plantlets/Petri dish (an average of 1.5 plantlets/Petri dish)
depending on the genotype. The spontaneous rediploidization
rate obtained was 25% in isolated microspore
Pepper-pot emittance measurement of laser-plasma wakefield accelerated electrons
The transverse emittance is an important parameter governing the brightness of an electron beam. Here we present the first pepper-pot measurement of the transverse emittance for a mono-energetic electron beam from a laser-plasma wakefield accelerator, carried out on the Advanced Laser-Plasma High Energy Accelerators towards X-Rays (ALPHA-X) beam line. Mono-energetic electrons are passed through an array of 52 mu m diameter holes in a tungsten mask. The pepper-pot results set an upper limit for the normalised emittance at 5.5 +/- 1 pi mm mrad for an 82 MeV beam
Exploratory QTL analyses of some pepper physiological traits in two environments
behind phenotypic differences and led to selection of genotypes having favourable traits. Continuous monitoring of environmental conditions has also become an accessible option. Rather than single trait evaluation, we would prefer smarter approaches capable of evaluating multiple, often correlated and time dependent traits simultaneously as a function of genes (QTLs) and environmental inputs, where we would The use of molecular breeding techniques has increased insight into the genetics like to include intermediate genomic information as well. In this paper, an exploratory QTL analysis over two environments was undertaken using available genetic and phenotypic data from segregating recombinant inbred lines (RIL) of pepper (Capsicum annuum). We focused on vegetative traits, e.g. stem length, speed of stem development, number of internodes etc. We seek to improve the estimation of allelic values of these traits under the two environments and determine possible QTL x E interaction. Almost identical QTLs are detected for each trait under the two environments but with varying LOD scores. No clear evidence was found for presence of QTL by environment interactions, despite differences in phenotypes and in magnitude of QTLs expression. Within the EU project SPICY (Voorrips et al., 2010 this issue), a larger number of environments will be studied and more advanced statistical analysis tools will be considered. The correlation between the traits will also be modelled. The identification of markers for the important QTL (Nicolaï et al., 2010 this issue) will improve the speed and accuracy of genomic prediction of these complex phenotype
Biomimetic total synthesis of (+)-merochlorin A
Inspired: The proposed biosynthetic pathway toward the potent antibiotic meroterpenoid (±)-merochlorinA inspired its concise total synthesis. The key steps in the synthesis are a one-pot aromatization-alkylation reaction, followed by a biomimetic oxidative dearomatization of a highly functionalized naphthalene derivative, which forms two rings and four contiguous stereocenters in a single step.
