Nitrogen-vacancy center has proven a promising candidate in quantum information and quantum sensing due to its excellent optical and spin properties for long coherent time and robust spin state readout, as well as its sensitivity towards multiple tunable parameters such as magnetic field, electric field, mechanical strain and pressure. In this thesis, we study the change of diamagnetic properties of single crystal BaFe₂(As₀.₅₉P₀.₄₁)₂ under high pressure at cryogenic condition by using micron-sized diamond particles as spatially resolved magnetic probes. In addition, we review advanced spin coherent control and readout techniques using cavity quantum electrodynamics in literatures. At last, we demonstrate the interplay between quantum optimal control and machine learning. We extract vectorial information of the local magnetic field at different position on the sample from ODMR spectrum. Through tuning pressure parameter and performing thermal cycle, we determine the lower critical field c₁ and lower critical temperature c₁, together with c₂ dependence of the sample as a function of pressure. This novel sensing technique utilizing NV centers overcomes technical difficulties of employing conventional fragile magnetic probes under extreme pressure, while being a local vector field sensor and readily accessible to most confocal or wide-field microscopy setups. On the other hand, we use deep reinforcement learning and active learning to study the feasibility and outlook for quantum optimal control and suggest hybrid approach to improve current standalone algorithms and methods. M.Phil. Translating Yu Hua's realist trauma literature through psychoanalysis : using brothers and to live as examples of acting out and working through
From avant-gardism to realism, the transformation of Yu Hua’s literary style parallels China’s tectonic transition from the aftermath of the cultural revolution to a new market economy. Having adopted an unadorned and minimal style of narration, Yu Hua’s brand of realism employs vocabulary that is simple, down-to-earth, at times even repetitive. With the Cultural Revolution as a reoccurring theme of Yu Hua’s decade-long foray into China’s traumatic past, he has been constantly grappling with the issue of how to represent China’s traumatic history and ever-changing reality in the most fitting manner possible. As an author, Yu Hua’s goal of writing as he himself once described in an interview is to “look out upon the world with sympathetic eyes,” which gave rise to the realist style we see today. Instead of attributing his stylistic shift to commercialisation and the mass appeal of popular fiction, an argument endorsed by most scholars in the Chinese literary sphere, I maintain that it is a conscious choice made by the author to take a balanced approach to narrating trauma. With the help of psychoanalytic and trauma theories, this thesis contends that the concision and simplicity as emblematic of Yu Hua’s brand of realism is a daring yet fruitful attempt at documenting trauma, from the phase of (1) acting out where it is repetitively obsessed over, to when it is eventually (2) worked through.published_or_final_versionChineseMasterMaster of Philosoph

Influence of Relative Hypoparathyroidism on the Responsiveness to Recombinant Human Erythropoietin in Hemodialysis Patients
Background/Aim: It has been shown in a few studies examining small patient groups that high levels of intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) were associated with a less efficient response to recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO). However, the responsiveness to rHuEPO in hemodialysis (HID) patients with relative hypoparathyroidism remains undetermined. This study examines the responsiveness to rHuEPO in HID patients with relative hypoparathyroidism. Methods: We retrospectively studied 19 nondiabetic patients( mean age 44.3 +/- 8.2 years, age range 29 .4-55.6 years) treated with HID for chronic glomerulonephritis. Of the 19 patients, 8 (group A) had iPTH levels 100 pg/ml ( group B). Hematocrit (Hct) and rHuEPO doses were recorded for statistical analysis. Results: In patients of groups A and B, the rHuEPO dose (U/kg/week) was 55.21 +/- 16.23 vs. 84. 08 +/- 24.56 (p = 0.01); Hct (%) 33.29 +/- 1.72 vs. 31.43 +/- 2.98 (p = 0. 67), and rHuEPO resistance index (weekly rHuEPO dose/Hct) 81.38 +/- 16.64 vs. 155.63 +/- 42.22 (p < 0 .001). Furthermore, weekly rHuEPO dose and rHuEPO resistance index correlated positively with serum iPTH levels (R = 0. 765, p < 0.001; R = 0.764, p < 0.001), whereas the Hct correlated negatively with serum iPTH levels (R = -0.400, p= 0.045). The alkaline phosphatase level (IU/l) was lower ( 50.46 +/- 12.87 vs. 69.61 +/- 20.68, p = 0.17) in group A. Conclusion: Our observations suggest that the lower the iPTH levels of chronic HID patients, even with relative hypoparathyroidism, the better the responsiveness to rHuEPO
Programmed death-ligand 1 expression correlates with diminished CD8+ T cell infiltration and predicts poor prognosis in anal squamous cell carcinoma patients

This study explored PD-L1 expression in ASCC patients and its association with patients’ clinicopathological features, CD8+ T cell infiltration, and prognosis. Methods: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor samples from 26 patients with ASCC were retrieved. The levels of PD-L1 expression on the membrane of both tumor cells and tumor-infiltrating mononuclear cells (TIMCs) were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. CD8+ T cell densities, both within tumors and at the tumor–stromal interface, were also analyzed. Baseline clinicopathological characteristics, human papilloma virus (HPV) status, and outcome data correlated with PD-L1-positive staining. Results: PD-L1 expression on tumor cells and TIMCs was observed in 46% and 50% of patients, respectively. Nineteen patients (73%) were HPV positive, with 7 showing PD-L1-positive staining on tumor cells and 9 showing PD-L1-positive staining on TIMCs. Increasing CD8+ density within tumors, but not immune stroma, was significantly associated with decreased PD-L1 expression by both tumor cells and TIMCs (P=0.0043 and P=0.0007). Patients with negative PD-L1 expression had significantly better progression-free survival (P=0.038 and P=0.0443) and a non-statistically significant trend toward longer overall survival (P=0.0882 and P=0.1222) compared with patients with positive PD-L1 expression. Conclusion: PD-L1 is widely expressed on the membrane of tumor cells and TIMCs in ASCCs. Its negative impact on prognosis may be due to the diminished CD8+ T cell infiltration within tumors. Keywords: CD8, PD-L1, HPV, tumor infiltrating mononuclear cell
