    The political role of the people's liberation army 1949-1973

    This thesis is to study the political role of the People's Liberation Army from the approach of structure and function. The framework of the thesis consists of three major parts, first, the influence of Chinese traditional political culture on, and the formation of, the political role of the PL A; second, the influence of domestic political struggles and external military conflicts on the development of the political role of the PLA; and the third, the analysis of the transition of the PLA's political role from the structure and personnel arrangements of the CCPCC Within the above-mentioned three scopes, this thesis make a thorough discussion on the following: (1) The relationship between the structure of the PRC and the formation of the PLA's political role; (2) How has ideology influenced the army's political role; (3) What is Mao's viewpoint and his influence on the development of the army's political role; (4) What is the link between the army and the party, and how has this developed; (6) What accounts for the expansion of the PLA's political functions; (7) What is the influence of political factional struggles on the PLA's political role; (8) Is it political institution or military institution that controls the recruitment of the military elite; (9) What are the disparities between the military elite in handling international conflicts and what are their political considerations; (10) What is the Party's position in the army; (11) How have the Party’s important meetings and personnel arrangements influenced the rise and fall of the PLA's political role

Figs. 12- 16: Habrocestoides furcatus Xie et al., 1993. 12 Body; 13 Palpal organ, prolateral; 14 Ditto, ventral; 15 Ditto, Diagnosis: This species is allied to H. sinensis, but differs from the latter by: (l) embolus much shorter and thinner, slightly bifurcated in retrolateral view (Fig. 15 cf. Fig. 20); (2) tibial apophysis fork-shaped in retrolateral view (Fig. 15); (3) bulb stouter (Fig. 13 cf. Fig. 18). Male holotype: TL 3.35, CL 1.8, CW 1.5, AEW 1.4, PEW 1.3, EFL 0.7, AL 1.6, AW 1.2. Carapace reddish brown, eye field dark brown, with brown setae; eyes I straight, diameter of AME about twice that of ALE, ALE slightly larger than PLE, PME at midpoint between ALE and PLE. Chelicerae orange (also endites, labium and sternum), 2 promarginal teeth and 1 retromarginal. Legs yellowish brown, short and strong, black-brown annuli distally on femur, patella and tibia. Abdomen oval, pattern as in Fig. 12, ventrally yellowish brown. Palpal organ (Figs. 13-16): embolus very short, spine-shaped in prolateral view (Fig. 13), slightly bifurcated in retrolateral view (Fig. 15); tibial apophysis hook-shaped in ventral view (Fig. 14), fork-shaped in retrolateral view (Fig. 15).     The politics of fashion: perceptions of power in female clothing and ornamentation as reflected in the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei

    This thesis examines issues of female power and influence in sixteenth-century China focusing on how women and their roles were perceived in the changing social environment of the mid-late Ming dynasty. Using aspects of a New Historicist approach, information from contemporary literary and historical sources are analysed alongside each other. With its emphasis on the lives of women and preoccupation with the description of material objects, the late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei forms an important element in the thesis. China in the sixteenth century saw expanding urbanisation, the emergence of a new wealthy merchant class, increasing visibility of women and a questioning of traditional morality. Fashion consciousness, as one of the most conspicuous aspects of the new material culture, is a possible indicator of these trends. Traditional Western theories contend that fashion began in the particular context of Renaissance Europe. However, this study argues that a similar fashion awareness existed in China too, and was manifested in a competitive striving for social status, in this case specifically among women. In contrast to previous studies which downplayed the impact women had on defining traditional Chinese culture, this thesis demonstrates how women and their sartorial choices began to redefine the boundaries of material culture, influencing literati discourse which, in turn, re- influenced female behaviour

    Applying TAPM Simulation and Photochemical Indicators to Evaluate Ozone Sensitivity in Kao Ping Air Quality Basin

    This study measures the ozone precursors such as nitric acid (HNO3) and formaldehyde (HCHO), at the Xiaogang (XG) Station in Kaohsiung City and the Liuqiu (LQ) Station in Pingtung County. In addition, we refer to the NOX and O3 data from the EPA monitor sites at XG and LQ stations to establish a localized database of ozone precursors in southern Taiwan. The measured ozone precursors are made into O3/NOy, O3/HNO3, HCHO/NOy as the photochemical indicators to evaluate the ozone sensitivity. The concentrations of nitric acid and formaldehyde at XG station are between 0.82 \ue2 15.50 ppb and 0.90 \ue2 19.20 ppb, respectively, while the concentrations of nitric acid and formaldehyde at LQ station are between 0.95 \ue2 23.76 ppb and 0.50 \ue2 5.30 ppb, respectively. Comparing the defined localized photochemical indicator ratios, the O3/HNO3 indicator shows that the ozone is dominated by VOCs at XG Station in four seasons. For LQ Station, with the evaluation of O3/HNO3 indicator, the ozone is VOC-sensitive in summer (88.9%) and autumn (62.5%), while sensitive to both VOC and NOX in winter and in spring. The O3/NOy indicator shows that ozone is VOC-sensitive (100%) at XG and LQ station in four seasons. The HCHO/NOy indicator shows that the ozone is VOC-sensitive (88.9% \ue2 100%) at XG Station in four seasons. LQ Station is VOC\ue2sensitive (100%) in winter and spring, and sensitive to both VOC and NOX in summer and autumn according to the evaluation of HCHO/NOy indicator. This study uses The Air Pollution Model (TAPM) to simulate ozone depletion at XG Station and LQ Station. The results show that the Pearson correlation coefficient (R) is 0.82 (0.81) between the simulated and measured ozone at XG (LQ) Station, and the consistency index (IOA) is 0.90 (0.89), while the error index (1\ue2IOA) =0.10 (0.11), demonstrating that TAPM is reliable. Furthermore, TAPM is used to simulate the reduction of area source of VOCs and NOX in Kao Ping air quality basin to draw an EKMA diagram. The results show that the ozone sensitivity of XG is VOC-sensitive. However, as for the ozone sensitivity of LQ station, the reduction results shows that there is no significant difference in the response of the reduction to the ozone level of LQ

    Study of Mechanical Properties of AZ91 Magnesium Alloy Welded by Laser Process Taking into Account the Anisotropy Microhardness and Residual Stresses by X-Ray Diffraction

    The objective was to study the mechanical properties of a magnesium alloy welded by a CO2 laser. Residual stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction. They were calculated by the classic sin2Y method in the isotropic zones by using the orientation distribution function (ODF) in the textured zones. The results demonstrated that laser welding results in the formation of a number of different zones with different microstructural and mechanical properties. Welding principally leads to a reduction in grain size and a new distribution of phases. The most remarkable observation was that of a superficial layer on the surface of the welded zone. This layer has the peculiarity of a marked crystallographic texture, a reduction in the level of aluminium as well as an elevated microhardness. These characteristics disappear after a depth of 200μm under the welded zone. These modifications can be explained by the nature of the solidification which occurs under nonequilibrium conditions resulting in an equiaxial columnar transition. This transition is also evident within the profile of residual tensile stresses which are at their maximum at the interface between the superficial layer and the rest of the welded zone. These results are explained by the anisotropic properties of the textured layer in relation to the plasticity
