The text that will be presented intends to discuss practices of reading the children’s works of Monteiro Lobato from the investigation of missives received by the author to be directed by Dona Benta or directly by Dona Benta as the recipient of the letter, in an almost explicit confusion on the part of the letter writers between reality and fantasy, person and character. For this, we will use six letters, three of junior readers and three of adolescents, available at the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB), at the University of São Paulo.O texto que será apresentado pretende discutir práticas de leitura das obras infantis de Monteiro Lobato a partir da investigação de missivas recebidas pelo autor para serem, por ele, encaminhadas a Dona Benta ou tendo, diretamente, Dona Benta como a destinatária da carta, numa quase explícita confusão, por parte dos missivistas, entre realidade e fantasia, pessoa e personagem.
Nutrition Education via A Mobile Application on Weight Loss and Quality of Life: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Objective: To evaluate the effect of nutrition education supported by MOtiVE mobile application on weight loss and quality of life (QoL). Methods: In this pilot randomized-controlled study, 79 overweight/obese patients who presented to University Hospital between MarchSeptember 2018 to consult a dietitian, were included. All the participants were provided with a weight-loss diet program. Then, participants were randomized to experimental and control groups. During the first interview, all participants completed the questionnaire and anthropometric measurements were done. BMI, the scores obtained from different QoL scales, and Healthy Eating Index (HEI) were the dependent variables. Daily messages were sent to cases for 3 months via MOtiVE mobile application. All the participants were asked to be present three months later for a follow-up appointment. Using SPSS 25.0, change in BMI, QoL scores, and other variables within both groups were assessed via Wilcoxon signed-rank test and McNemar chi-square test. Results: 20 cases and 18 controls completed the study. The mean BMI decreased significantly in both groups being more predominant in cases (p=.001 for cases and p=.006 for controls). Waist circumference decreased (p=.029), self-esteem (p=.035) and healthy eating scores (p=.007) increased only in cases. Hence there were significant improvements in cases, in the final evaluation, there were no significant differences between the groups (p>.05) Conclusion: Nutrition education supported by MOtiVE mobile application improved anthropometric measurements, self-esteem, quality of life, and healthy eating habits of the overweight/obese participants. Free mobile applications can be used in increasing motivation to adopt new behaviors to tackle obesity.Ege University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Bureau [17-SBE-004]Funding: This study was funded by Ege University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Bureau (No: 17-SBE-004) . Twins talk what twins tell us about person, self, and society
"Twins Talk is an ethnographic study of identical twins in the United States, a study unique in that it considers what twins have to say about themselves, instead of what researchers have written about them. It presents, in the first person, the grounded and practical experiences of twins as they engage, both individually and together, the "who am I" and "who are we" questions of life. Here, the twins themselves are the stars. Dona Lee Davis conducted conversational interviews with twenty-two sets of identical twins attending the Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, the largest such gathering in the world. Lively and often opinionated, each twin comes through as a whole person who at the same time maintains a special bond that the vast majority of people will never experience. The study provides a distinctive and enlightening insider's challenge to the nature/nurture debates that dominate contemporary research on twins. The author, herself an identical twin, draws on aspects of her own life to inform her analysis of the data throughout the text. Each chapter addresses a different theme from multiple viewpoints, including those of popular science writers, scientific researchers, and singletons, as well as those of the twins themselves".
Development and evaluation of Dona, a privacy-preserving donation platform for messaging data from WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram
Hakobyan O, Hillmann P-J, Martin F, Böttinger E, Drimalla H. Development and evaluation of Dona, a privacy-preserving donation platform for messaging data from WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. Behavior Research Methods . 2025;57(3): 94.Social interactions are a fundamental aspect of human life, yet, their objective and naturalistic measurement remains challenging for scientific research. This challenge can be addressed using digital communication data. To this end, we have developed Dona, an open-source platform for donating messaging data from WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. Given the highly sensitive nature of messaging data, we ensure participant privacy through rigorous data minimization. Dona removes all sensitive information on the user side prior to donation, retaining only de-identified meta-data such as message length and timestamps. This paper presents an overview of the platform, a deployment guide, and example use cases. In addition, we evaluate the informativeness of minimized messaging data for studying social interactions with two approaches. First, we conducted a user study in which 85 participants donated their data, received visualizations of their messaging behavior and evaluated the informativeness of this visual feedback. Second, we performed a quantitative analysis using over 1500 donated chats to confirm whether minimized messaging data captures known aspects of human interactions, such as interaction balance, heterogeneity, and burstiness. The results demonstrate that minimized, de-identified messaging data reflects informative interaction features as assessed by both self-reports and objective metrics. In conclusion, Dona is a donation platform well suited for sensitive contexts in which researchers aim to balance participant privacy with the acquisition of objective and informative data on social interactions. © 2025.
This Phd Thesis "The Fatal Woman in Spanish Cinema, 1939-1951", is a detailed study of the cinema character of the fatal woman, The main objective is to demonstrate that the fatal woman was present in the movies of the forties, in spite of the censorship to the artistic representations that seemed only to ease when it was useful to the dictatorship. To begin with, the study refers to the theoretical basis that previews the character. This is done through a historical, artistic and social prespective. Next, there is a summary of the previous cinema in order to establish the cinematic basis of the character. This brief summary, with no aim of exhaustivity, refers to those cinemas which influence Spanish cinema; it is also done for previous Spanish cinema which is mostly silent cinema. Then, an exhaustive analysis is realized of the Spanish cinema between 1939 and 1951. Research is done on bibliography, hemerography and filmography to determine the films which contain the character. After that, a deep analysis is done on 7 chosen films which the author takes as representative of the period of study. Therefore, we accomplish the objectives we established at the beginning of the research
