The effectiveness of laughter-based interventions on psychological, physiological and educational outcomes in nursing students: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of laughter-based interventions across psychological, physiological and educational outcomes in nursing students. Background: Nursing education may involve educational, emotional and clinical demands that could impact students' well-being and academic success. Laughter-based interventions may help to reduce these challenges. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted between March 1-15, 2025, using seven international and two national databases. Randomized controlled and controlled studies comparing laughter-based interventions with control groups were included. Data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers and risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane RoB tool. Meta-analyses and subgroup analyses based on intervention timing (regular term vs. special or transitional periods) were performed using RevMan (version 5.4). Results: Eighteen studies with 1366 participants were included. Laughter-based interventions significantly reduced stress (SMD = -1.26, 95 % CI [-1.83, -0.69], p < 0.0001), anxiety (SMD = -1.19, 95 % CI [-1.87, -0.50], p = 0.0007) and salivary cortisol levels (SMD = -0.86, 95 % CI [-1.23, -0.48], p < 0.00001). Improvements were also observed in well-being, happiness and sleep quality. Subgroup analyses showed benefits in both regular and transitional periods, though effects did not consistently differ by timing. No significant effects were found for depression, pulse rate, or academic self-efficacy. Conclusion: Laughter-based interventions appears to be a promising complementary approach to promote psychological well-being and physiological stress regulation in nursing students. Further high-quality research is needed to clarify academic effects and guide implementation
Nurses' views and applications on palliative care
Purpose This study was carried out descriptively to determine the view and applications about pallative care of nurses working in a university hospital.Design and Methods The data were collected with the questionnaire form: "Individual Information Form" and "Views and Appllications on Palliative Care," created by the researchers in line with the literature.Findings A total of 96.6% of the nurses evaluated the scope of palliative care as pain relief, and the most common difficulties in care were identified as bad news (88.1%). In all, 22.0% of the nurses talked to the patient and their family about death.Practice Implications It is thought that the majority of nurses are not trained in palliative care and their opinions about palliative care are affected by this situation
The relationship between discomfort intolerance and the fear of self-injection and testing in patients with diabetes using insulin: A cross-sectional study
Background: Diabetes is a global problem. Diabetes nurses, in particular, take great responsibility in reducing and controlling the fears of individuals using insulin and increasing their capacity to tolerate discomfort. Aim: This study was conducted to examine the effects of the capacity to tolerate discomfort on the fear of self-injection and the status of testing blood glucose levels in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes using insulin. MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2022 and February 2023 with 320 adult patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes using insulin who were followed up in the Endocrinology and Internal Medicine Clinics of a university hospital in Turkey. The data analysis process included analyses of the frequency, independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, the Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Pearson's correlation analysis. Data were analysed using the IBM SPSS v27.0 software, considering alpha as 0.05. Results: The mean total Discomfort Intolerance Scale score of the patients was 22.78 +/- 6.74, and the mean Fear of Self-Injecting and self-testing was 21.1 +/- 6.7. A negative significant correlation was found between the discomfort intolerance levels of the patients and their levels of fear of self-injection and self-testing (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Individuals with a higher capacity to tolerate discomfort have lower levels of fear of self-testing and self-injection. Therefore, the fear of self-testing and self-injection in patients using insulin injections may affect diabetes self-management. Relevance to Clinical PracticeIndividuals with low tolerance for discomfort should be identified, interventions to increase tolerance in individuals at risk should be planned, and diabetes self-management should be better supported. Reporting MethodThe reporting of the results of the study adhered to the STROBE guidelines
Assessment of the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the rheumatoid arthritis knowledge questionnaire (RAKE-T): A methodological study
It is important to determine knowledge of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to meet their educational needs. However, there is no updated Turkish questionnaire designed to assess patient knowledge in RA. The aim of the study was to translate the Rheumatoid Arthritis Knowledge Questionnaire (RAKE) into Turkish and assess its psychometric properties. This methodological study was conducted on 233 patients diagnosed with RA who were admitted to the rheumatology outpatient clinic of a university hospital between February 2023 and September 2023. Language validity, content validity, item validity (difficulty and discrimination index), known group validity, test-retest and internal consistency reliability examined the psychometric properties of the scale. The content validity index for RAKE-T was between 0.80-1.00. There was a significant correlation between the total score of the questionnaire and its sub-domains ranging from 0.23 to 0.83. According to the questionnaire's item analysis, the item difficulty ranged from 0.25-0.86 and the discrimination index ranged from 0.27-0.70. Within the known group validity, the knowledge scores were significantly lower in the patient groups with low education, disease duration of less than five years, and patients who did not receive education about their disease (p<0.05). The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the questionnaire were 0.89 and 0.82, respectively. Healthcare professionals can use RAKE-T to assess the level of knowledge of RA patients, design a training plan based on the areas where knowledge deficits are high, and assess the effectiveness of training by using the questionnaire after training
Relationship between death anxiety of Turkish nurses and their attitudes toward the dying patients
This study aims to investigate the relationship between death anxiety of the Turkish nurses and their attitudes toward the dying patient. This study involved 203 nurses who were working at a university hospital. The data were collected using "Nurse Information Form" (which was prepared by the authors of this research), "Thorson-Powell Death Anxiety Scale," and "Attitude Scale about Euthanasia, Death, and Dying Patient." There was a positive correlation between death anxiety and dying patient avoidance behavior and euthanasia score (p < .05). The findings showed that nurses, death anxiety, and death scores were high in the loss of a close relatives (p < .05). Our findings suggest that the situation of the dying patients and their families and also nurses should be improved. Thus, special psychological education/training should be given to the nurses to deal with death anxiety and their attitude to the dying patient
The effect of spiritual well-being on illness perception of lung cancer patients
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of spiritual well-being on the perception of people who have lung cancer. The study was conducted with 100 volunteered patients with living lung cancer who were monitored and treated at a university hospital in Turkey. Patient Identification Form, Spiritual Well-Being Scale and Illness Perception Scale were used for the data collection procedure. Using SPSS 21.0 program, independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA test were performed in statistical analyses. The probability value was considered significant as p < 0.05. The mean score of Spiritual Well Being (SWB) was found 28.48 & PLUSMN; 7.20. The findings were as follows: (1) the patients who stated that they comply with the drug treatment had a high score, and SWB scores were found to be lower in those who thought that the disease could not be cured. (2) there was a significant positive relationship among SWB and sub-dimensions of the illness perceptions; acute-chronic duration (p = .668), personal control (p = .811), treatment control (p = .682), emotional representation (p = 0.184) 3), as the SWB mean score increases, the scores in the illness perception section increase 4; however, when the SWB score increases, the cyclic time decreases. It was concluded that the spiritual well-being of people who have lung cancer positively affects the perception of the disease. It was further suggested that spiritual well-being should be evaluated and improved within holistic care in order to ensure patients perception of disease and compliance with treatment
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
