Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. AVALIAÇÃO DE CUP-CELLS ARTIFICIAIS UTILIZADAS NO MÉTODO DOOLITTLE PARA CRIAÇÃO DE RAINHAS APIS MELLÍFERA AFRICANIZADAS.
No full textThe artificial cups-cells made of plastic and pure wax, used in the Doolittle method for the rearing of Africanized Apis melliferous queens, were evaluated through variables such as the number of accepted and capped cups-cells, diameter and height of realeras, number of queens born and the number of queens fertilized per treatment. 5 larval progenitor mother hives and an incubator hive were selected, using a single cup-cell holder frame with a total of 40 translarvae domes distributed in 2 slats; 20 wax and 20 plastic, in regards to food was based on concentrations of royal jelly and distilled water in 50/50 portions. The data was processed using the Rapid Miner Studio version 9.9 software for data visualization and probability calculation, for the analysis of variance the generalized linear model, Pearson correlation matrix graph and Kruskal non-parametric test analysis were used. -Wallis with a significance level of 95%; It was obtained that in both types of domes (plastic and wax), they presented similar results in the probabilities of fertilization and birth, in addition, there was no significant difference in terms of the weight of the queens born and size of the real cells. It was concluded that the materials used obtain similar results in the birth of new queens without affecting the diameter of the cell cups for their weight.Se evaluó las copas-celdas artificiales de plástico y cera pura, utilizadas en el método Doolittle para la crianza de reinas Apis melíferas africanizadas, a través de variables como el número de copas-celdas aceptadas y operculadas, diámetro y altura de realeras, número de reinas nacidas y el número de reinas fecundadas por tratamiento. Se seleccionó 5 colmenas madres progenitoras de larvas y una colmena incubadora, mediante un solo marco porta copas-celdas con un total de 40 cúpulas traslarvadas distribuidas en 2 listones; 20 de cera y 20 de plástico, en lo que respecta a la alimentación fue basada en concentraciones de jalea real y agua destilada en porciones de 50/50. Los datos fueron procesados el software Rapid Miner Studio versión 9.9 para la visualización de los datos y el cálculo de las probabilidades, para el análisis de varianza se utilizó el modelo lineal generalizado, gráfica de matriz de correlación de Pearson y análisis de prueba no paramétrica Kruskal-Wallis con un nivel de significancia del 95%; se obtuvo que en ambos tipos de cúpulas (plástico y cera), presentaron resultados similares en las probabilidades de fecundación y nacimiento además no existió diferencia significativa en cuanto al peso de las reinas nacidas y tamaño de las celdas reales. Se concluyo que los materiales utilizados se obtienen similares resultados en el nacimiento de nuevas reinas sin afectar el diámetro de las copas celdas para el peso de las mismas.As células-copos artificiais confeccionadas em plástico e cera pura, utilizadas no método Doolittle para criação de rainhas melíferas Apis africanizadas, foram avaliadas através de variáveis como número de células-copos aceitas e tampadas, diâmetro e altura das realeras, número de células-copos aceitas e tampadas, diâmetro e altura das realeras, rainhas nascidas e o número de rainhas fecundadas por tratamento. Foram selecionadas 5 colmeias mãe progenitoras larvais e uma colmeia incubadora, utilizando uma única estrutura porta-células com um total de 40 cúpulas translarvas distribuídas em 2 ripas; 20 cera e 20 plástico, no que diz respeito à alimentação foi baseado em concentrações de geleia real e água destilada em porções 50/50. Os dados foram processados no software Rapid Miner Studio versão 9.9 para visualização dos dados e cálculo de probabilidade, para a análise de variância utilizou-se o modelo linear generalizado, gráfico da matriz de correlação de Pearson e análise do teste não paramétrico de Kruskal.-Wallis com nível de significância de 95%; Obteve-se que em ambos os tipos de cúpulas (plástica e cera), apresentaram resultados semelhantes nas probabilidades de fecundação e nascimento, além disso, não houve diferença significativa em termos de peso das rainhas nascidas e tamanho das células reais . Concluiu-se que os materiais utilizados obtêm resultados semelhantes no nascimento de novas rainhas sem afetar o diâmetro dos copos celulares para o seu pes

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
