The representation of interpersonal relationships in fiction is a challenge for the author of the film script and for the audiovisual translator due to the difficulty of translating pragmatic values in a very restricted environment. In this sense, the aim of this article is to analyze how interpersonal relationships are depicted in Der Passfälscher (2022) through register and im/personalization, and how these representations are translated into Catalan and Spanish. To this end, the scenes have been counted, selecting those with socially symmetrical interpersonal constellations and examining them from a qualitative and contrastive approach. The analysis of the data reveals differences based on the target language and the social role of the participants in the interaction. While Catalan manages to maintain the characterizations activated in German to a greater extent, Spanish reflects interpersonal relations more distant from the original text. The representation of interpersonal relationships in fiction is a challenge for the author of the film script and for the audiovisual translator due to the difficulty of translating pragmatic values in a very restricted environment. Showing agreement, disagreement or epistemic resistance are some of the most frequent activities that we engage in in everyday conversations. Furthermore, they present greatest variation depending on the communicative situation. In the following research I analyse the functions, parameters and forms that characterise their linguistic expression in similar contexts in Spanish and German. In order to do so I draw on a set of everyday interactions extracted from Gran Hermano 17 and Big Brother 12, respectively. Firstly, I review the main studies devoted to this phenomenon stemming from Discourse Analysis and Conversational Analysis. Secondly, I specify the data base’s features, the methodological decisions and the threefold level of analysis: the expression of agreement, disagreement and epistemic resistance. Thirdly, the recognition of these levels allows us to observe the parameters and forms present in the Spanish and German data, and to contrast the existing differences and similarities. Consequently, this study fills a gap in the contrastive literature between both languages and reflects the most common uses to express these conversational activities in communicative situations halfway between prototypically colloquial conversation and TV conversation

The aim of this thesis is to analyse and compare the use of requests made by German and Spanish speakers in two different communicative situations: everyday situations and competitions or matches. I draw from two hypotheses: on the one hand, that the interactional context has a direct impact on the process of requests’ formation and recognition and, on the other hand, that there are cross-linguistic differences between both languages. Furthermore, the currents upon which the theoretical framework is based are tackled: the study of requests throughout history, the contribution of the diaphasic variation and the contrastive approach of intercultural pragmatics. Taking these into consideration, five interrelated general objectives can be outlined: (1) to describe the features characterising the selected communicative situations and their position within the colloquial-formal axis; (2) to analyse the use of requests in everyday situations in German and Spanish; (3) to repeat the analysis scheme in the competitive situations; (4) to detect and to contrast the differences and similarities between both situations and languages; and (5) to examine the role played by mitigation in the formation of the aforementioned directives. To do so, I have compiled a bilingual, comparable corpus of 3 hours, 57 minutes and 51 seconds and 35271 words based on the live broadcast of Big Brother 12 (Germany) and Gran Hermano 17 (Spain). First, observing the scene allows me to organise the features of the situation, register and discourse genre while rendering a justified distinction between prototypical and peripheral colloquial conversations. Second, the analysis of the requests in the first situation type shows the presence of four macro- and ten microfunctions, an unequal quantitative distribution of these and the existence of form/function conventions in each language respectively. Third, applying the same analysis scheme to the second situation type confirms the qualitative equivalence of the macro- and microfunctions, but also a disparate distribution of the occurrences and sometimes unequal conventions in comparison to the previous ones. Fourth, the differences and similarities observed in both languages in the situational change correlate with the cross-linguistic contrast of the data. Fifth, the unequal presence of the mitigating devices in each context and language reveals the face-threatening value that both groups of speakers ascribe to the requests types respectively. All things considered, the thesis delves into the role of these directives in varied face-to-face scenarios and contributes to the progress of contrastive studies regarding pragmatic phenomena in German and Spanish.

Big Brother Germany and Spain: a Linguistic Characterization from a Theory of Register

The aim of this paper is to justify the suitability of using Big Brother as a means of addressing the study of colloquial register in German and Spanish. Drawing on the conceptualization of register as a continuum (Briz Gómez 2010), in the following pages we examine an unpublished bilingual corpus consisting of conversations in daily routine contexts. The analysis of the data reveals that the situational features are highly colloquial in the interactions studied, and shows a specific display of the following parameters: control on language production, lexical in/accuracy, deixis, un/familiar treatment, syntax, extra/linguistic contextualization and tone. In conclusion, this qualitative study sheds light on the language used in conversations in reality television and lays the foundation to consider Big Brother an adequate corpus for analyzing colloquial register in both languages.

In this paper, I present a first approach to supportive moves from the perspective of information structure and the Spanish-German contrast. In order to do so, I draw on a corpus of comparable, colloquial conversations extracted from the live broadcasting of Big Brother in both countries. In the analysis I focus on the differences and similarities regarding, on the one hand, the position, co-occurrence and connection of these moves and, on the other, the type of introducers and focal strategies used in each language. The results show that there was a preference in both cases for the final position, the concatenation of moves around a single head act and the adoption of the same focal strategies. Finally, whereas the Spanish and German introducers are equivalent, each language stablishes different connections with the respective head acts.
