Data Protection Issues of Integrated Electronic Health Records (EHR)
An Electronic Health Record (EHR) of a patient in perspective maintains the medical history of the citizen electronically in medical databanks serviced locally or is cloud based. The ownership and the access control should belong to the citizen and this should be done under the supervision of his personal doctor. Audit trails and security measures must be implemented for making sure that EHR systems properly collect, store, retain and use the patient health information for the better service of the citizen when in need of medical treatment. EU and other countries are determined to find solutions, impose policies and standards as to implement EHR at national level and international levels. In this article the main security issues are presented, the EU directives and legislations in data protection and privacy from the use of EHR are considered, and proposed solutions are analyzed. Finally, it is explained why EHR can and should remain a safe tool

Superpixel quality in microscopy images: the impact of noise & denoising
Microscopy is a valuable imaging tool in various biomedical research areas. Recent developments have made high resolution acquisition possible within a relatively short time. State-of-the-art imaging equipment such as serial block-face electron microscopes acquire gigabytes of data in a matter of hours. In order to make these amounts of data manageable, a more data-efficient representation is required. A popular approach for such data efficiency are superpixels which are designed to cluster homogeneous regions without crossing object boundaries. The use of superpixels as a pre-processing step has shown significant improvements in making computationally intensive computer vision analysis algorithms more tractable on large amounts of data. However, microscopy datasets in particular can be degraded by noise and most superpixel algorithms do not take this artifact into account. In this paper, we give a quantitative and qualitative comparison of superpixels generated on original and denoised images. We show that several advanced superpixel techniques are hampered by noise artifacts and require denoising and parameter tuning as a pre-processing step. The evaluation is performed on the Berkeley segmentation dataset as well as on fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy data
GameUp: Exergames for mobility – a project to keep elderly active
A big challenge for Europe is the demographic
shift towards an aging population. Resources in the health care
sector are limited, so it is important that the seniors of tomorrow
will be able to stay healthy and manage themselves as long
as possible, preferably also with a good quality of life. Physical
activity is very important both for mobility and for the general
well-being, but it can be hard to find motivation to exercise
alone at home. Also in rehabilitation there is a need for a more
engaging approach than a sheet of paper describing exercises
that should be performed. In the GameUp project we developed
fun and motivational exergames particularly targeting
elderly in a user centred approach. Physiotherapists ensured
that the movements and exercises were good for flexibility, leg
strength and balance. In addition to seven Kinect games, a
walking app and a professional portal were developed. The
Kinect games can be played in several levels, and those who
are at risk of falling are able to play while seated. The professional
portal ensures that the results of the project also can be
used as a tool in rehabilitation. Test results from 20 elderly
aged 65-95 as well as clinical trials of adherence to the exercises
are encouraging, and the international and multidisciplinary
team behind the project is now looking for ways to commercialize
the project outcomes
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
