Civil Engineering and Geoscience

Dear is Durable: Liber amicorum for Hans de Jonge

    No full text
This book presents a huge number of contributions on corporate and public real estate management, urban development management, design and construction management and housing. These topics correspond with the names of the four sections of the Department of Management in the Built Environment at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft, the Netherlands. The book is a Liber Amicorum for prof. Hans de Jonge to mark his farewell as professor of real estate management and development. Due to the special role Hans de Jonge has had for over 25 years in our department the book includes many other contributions as well, from his former and current PhD candidates, university managers, and academic and professional colleagues from inside and outside the faculty. It offers a diversity of words of praise, personal memories, solid pieces of academic work, and reflections on the present, past and future of real estate management and development. As such the book presents a very interesting story of twenty five years of teaching and conducting research being started, guided and/or influenced by Hans de Jonge. It shows the contribution that Hans, his team and others have made to the growing body of knowledge on how to match the demand and supply of real estate and how to contribute to an efficient and effective building stock that evokes interesting experiences.Real Estate ManagementUrban Development Managemen

The alternated span in the Italian Renaissance architecture. The instructions for use of the five orders have so far been paid less attention than the origin of the system. The “serlienne” pattern and that of the rythmical span appear as special applications of a style of patterns which the author studies in detail and suggests to name “the alternated span’’. This pattern has its sources in medieval and antique examples (triumphal arches) but is not exact copy. The author shows how these different types have influenced each other and been combined, the evolution of the small scale architecture into the monumental architecture, and the rich and original Venetian solutions.De Jonge Krista. Adsorption sequencing as a rapid method to link environmental bacteriophages to hosts

    No full text
An important viromics challenge is associating bacteriophages to hosts. To address this, we developed adsorption sequencing (AdsorpSeq), a readily implementable method to measure phages that are preferentially adsorbed to specific host cell envelopes. AdsorpSeq thus captures the key initial infection cycle step. Phages are added to cell envelopes, adsorbed phages are isolated through gel electrophoresis, after which adsorbed phage DNA is sequenced and compared with the full virome. Here, we show that AdsorpSeq allows for separation of phages based on receptor-adsorbing capabilities. Next, we applied AdsorpSeq to identify phages in a wastewater virome that adsorb to cell envelopes of nine bacteria, including important pathogens. We detected 26 adsorbed phages including common and rare members of the virome, a minority being related to previously characterized phages. We conclude that AdsorpSeq is an effective new tool for rapid characterization of environmental phage adsorption, with a proof-of-principle application to Gram-negative host cell envelopes

This book – the third in the Rondeltappe series – reflects the philosophy and didactic approach of Heritage and Architecture (H&A) section of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment (Delft University of Technology). H&A has three chairs: Design, Cultural Value and Technology. They work in close cooperation to lay the foundations for the preservation and continuity of use of built heritage.Designing from Heritage is strongly connected to the first book in the Rondeltappe series which deals with durability and sustainability of monuments, and with the second which advocates freedom in heritage based design. It contains the contribution of Prof. Wessel de Jonge – the Chair of Heritage and Design and principle at Wessel de Jonge Architects – and Prof Marieke Kuipers – Chair of Culural Heritage in particular of the Architecture of the Twentieth Century and senior specialist of Twentieth Century Built Heritage at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE).This book is meant as a tool for architectural education and conservation for which research is as integral part of the design strategy.Heritage & ValuesHeritage & Desig

Private Sector-led Urban Development Projects: Management, Partnerships & Effects in the Netherlands and the UK

    No full text
Subject of study is Private Sector-led Urban Development Projects. Such projects involve property developers taking a leading role and local authorities adopting a facilitating role in the management of the development of an urban area, based on a framework of public requirements and a formal contractual public-private role division. Such a development strategy is quite common in Anglo-Saxon urban development practices but is less known in Continental European practices. Nonetheless, since the beginning of the millennium such a development strategy also occurred in the Netherlands in the form of 'concessions'. However, remarkably little empirical knowledge is available about how public and private actors collaborate on and manage such projects and what the effects of their actions are. This dissertation provides a conceptual and empirical understanding of the various characteristics of private sector-led urban development projects by conducting empirical case study research in the Dutch and UK planning context. Important conclusions are that private sector-led urban development requires various complementary types of public-private management, and additional informal forms of public-private collaboration besides the formal contractual role division, and results in positive effects in terms of effectiveness and spatial quality. Besides this the research contains specific organisational and managerial recommendations for practice and science. Private sector-led urban development is a promising development strategy for spatial projects in the Netherlands at a time in which governments focus their attention towards facilitating private sector initiatives and investments in the city.Real Estate & HousingArchitectur

    Mapping Landscapes in Transformation

    No full text
Innovation in mapping methods for historical landscape research is flourishing, largely because this type of research is situated at the very fertile intersection ofongoing technological development and sustained critical reflection. On the onehand, the development of digital tools for data capturing, data analysis and datastructuring has revolutionised our ability to extract and plot out data of all sortsand to combine, mix and re-mix these data in order to discover spatio-temporalrelationships that have previously remained hidden. On the other hand, thehumanities’ sustained interest in spatiality as well as its growing involvement with the new digital tools make for a continuous critical reflection accompanied by ongoing methodological experiments that stretch, morph and bend these digital tools in order for them to reflect context and source specificity, to include different theoretical perspectives on landscape, to enable narrative formats, etc.Landscape Architectur

Private investment in hospitals: A comparison of three healthcare systems and possible implications for real estate strategies

    No full text
Subject/Research problemHealthcare is both important and expensive, and is likely to become even more expensive in the future. To keep healthcare affordable in the future, the Dutch government is currently in the process of changing legislation in order to move from a centrally directed system into a so-called regulated market system. Although Dutch healthcare providers have always been private organisations, until recently there was tight central governmental control on quality and investment cost of health care real estate. Once the brief and design had been approved by the Netherlands Board for Health Care Institutions, the government guaranteed the financing of the capital costs. The deregulation of real estate investment that comes with the new healthcare delivery system gives healthcare organisations new opportunities, but at the same time also more responsibility and a higher risk on investments. As a consequence, healthcare organisations have to find new ways of financing. Private capital investment is one of the options. Probably this will require a review of both corporate strategies and corporate real estate strategies.Research QuestionWhat are the experiences and lessons from private investment in hospitals in different countries and what might be the implications for healthcare organisations’ real estate strategies?ApproachBased on a literature review and analysis of documents the healthcare systems in the Netherlands, UK and Germany have been studied in relation to different approaches of private investment in hospitals.ResultThe analysis of three health care systems with a different proportion between private and public investment in hospitals has been used to explore strengths and weaknesses of different care systems and possible implications for real estate strategies of healthcare organisations.ApplicationThis paper provides a better understanding of the opportunities and risks of private investment in healthcare real estate and consequences for real estate strategies. The paper is part of a PhD research project that investigates the scope, context, theories and tools of Corporate Real Estate Management in hospitals.Real Estate Managemen

Molecular and Evolutionary Determinants of Bacteriophage Host Range

    No full text
The host range of a bacteriophage is the taxonomic diversity of hosts it can successfully infect. Host range, one of the central traits to understand in phages, is determined by a range of molecular interactions between phage and host throughout the infection cycle. While many well studied model phages seem to exhibit a narrow host range, recent ecological and metagenomics studies indicate that phages may have specificities that range from narrow to broad. There is a growing body of studies on the molecular mechanisms that enable phages to infect multiple hosts. These mechanisms, and their evolution, are of considerable importance to understanding phage ecology and the various clinical, industrial, and biotechnological applications of phage. Here we review knowledge of the molecular mechanisms that determine host range, provide a framework defining broad host range in an evolutionary context, and highlight areas for additional research
