INCREASING HEALTH LITERACY AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG HISPANIC AND LATINO STUDENTS IN DURHAM COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS THROUGH SCHOOL MEALS
Education access and quality is a key social determinant of health that has a major influence on
wellbeing (Healthy People 2030, n.d.). Higher levels of education have been shown to lead to increased
opportunities, employment, income, and health status (The Lancet Public Health, 2020). Health literacy
plays a large role in the decreased health status among those with lower educational attainment.
Inadequate health literacy has been shown to have a stronger association with poor health than age,
income, employment status, or race (Shahid et al., 2022). Within Durham County, race is highly
associated with educational attainment, as over 50% of both Hispanic males and females do not have a
high school diploma compared to less than 5% of white males and females (Statistical Atlas, 2018). This
proposal will create both a cultural school meal food program as well as a health literacy and English-asa-second-language (ESL) curriculum within Durham Public Schools (DPS). These proposed programs will create improvements in academic performance and health literacy among Hispanic/Latino youth, leading to long term improvements in the overall health status of Durham County’s greater

Structural and Biophysical Studies of Nucleic Acids
This thesis is based on six research publications concerned with (i) study of the molecular structures and dynamics of modified nucleosides; (ii) investigation of the effect of incorporation of modified nucleosides on the structure of DNA; (iii) examination of the effect of the sugar modifications on the pseudo-aromatic properties (pKa) of the nucleobases; (iv) analysis of the effect of the CH-π interactions on the relative stability of the DNA-RNA hybrid duplexes. The structural stability of the nucleic acids as well as their behavior in molecular recognition is dominated by hydrogen bonding and stacking interactions beside other non-covalent interactions. Naturally occurring nucleosides are found to have some specific functions. Modifications of nucleic acids, followed by studies of the resulting structural, chemical and functional changes, contribute to an understanding of their role in various biochemical processes, such as catalysis or gene silencing. In papers I-III, analysis of the structures of modified thymidine nucleosides with 1′,2′-(oxetane or azetidine) and 2′,4′-(LNA, 2′-amino LNA, ENA, and Aza-ENA) conformationally constrained sugar moieties, and dynamics of the modified nucleosides by NMR, ab initio, and molecular dynamics simulations are discussed. Based on whether the modification leads to 1′,2′- or 2′,4′- constrained sugar moieties, it is found that they fall into two distinct categories characterized by their respective internal dynamics of the glycosidic and backbone torsions as well as by their characteristic NE-type (P = 37° ± 27°, Φm = 25° ± 18°) for 1′,2′-constrained nucleosides, and N-type (P = 19° ± 8°, Φm = 48° ± 4°) for 2′,4′-constrained systems, respectively. Moreover, each group has different conformational hyperspace accessible. The effect of the incorporation of 1′,2′-oxetane locked thymidine nucleoside on the structure and dynamics of the Dickerson-Drew dodecamer, d(CGCGAATTCGCG)2, determined by NMR, is discussed in the paper IV. It shows that the incorporation of oxetane locked T into the dodecamer has made local structural deformations and perturbation in base pairing, where the modification is included. The modulations of physico-chemical properties of the nucleobases in nucleotides by the C2′-modification of the sugar (paper V), 5′-phosphate group, and the effect of constrained pentofuranosyl moiety (sugar, paper III) have been studied. CH-π interactions between the methyl group of thymidine and the neighboring aromatic nucleobase are shown to increase the relative stability of the DNA-RNA hybrid duplexes over the isosequential RNA-DNA duplexes or vice versa (paper VI)
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Sequence-specific Solution Structures of the Four Isosequential Pairs of Single-stranded DNAs and RNAs
The role of the sequence-context in the self-organization of four single-stranded (ss) isosequential pairs of DNAs (1 – 4) and RNAs (5 – 8), [d/r-(5’C1A2X3G4Y5A6C7): X3 = A or C, Y5 = A or C; sequence variations: 22 = 4], has been elucidated by NMR-constrained Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations (2 ns). Following sequence-specific observations have been made from the solution NMR and the NMR constrained MD simulation study: (i) Analysis of the NOESY footprints, mainly (H8/H6)n to (H1’ and H3’)n-1 contacts, of ssDNAs (1 – 4) and ssRNAs (5 – 8) in the aqueous medium have shown that all ssDNAs (1 – 4) and ssRNAs (5 – 8) adopt right handed stacked helical structures in the NMR time scale. (ii) Intra-residual cross-peak intensities for the H(8/6)n- H(1’/2’/2’’/H3’)n contacts in ssDNAs and ssRNAs are stronger at the 3’-ends in comparison with those at the 5’-ends, suggesting that the dynamics of the nucleobases at the 3’-end are more restricted, whereas those at the 5’-end are more flexible. (iii) This relative NMR found mobility is consistent with the final RMSd calculations of the final NMR-MD structures of ssDNAs and ssRNAs. They show that the 5’-end nucleobases have higher RMSd values compared to those at the 3’-end, except for the sequence d/r(5’C1A2A3G4A5A6C7). (iv) Relative nOe intensities of inter-residual H(8/6)n – H(1’)n-1 and H(8/6)n – H(3’)n-1 contacts, as well as NMR observed fluctuations in the sugar conformations, for ssDNAs (1 – 4) and ssRNAs (5 – 8) show that no ssDNA or ssRNA adopts either a typical B-type DNA or A-type RNA form. (v) In the final NMR-MD structures all the [H8/6N(n)—H1’N(n-1)/ H3’N(n-1), N = A, G, C] distances in different isosequential pairs of ssDNA (1 – 4) and ssRNA (5 – 8) change depending upon the sequence context of the single-stranded nucleic acids. Both in the deoxy and ribo series, it is the purine-rich sequences [d/r-(5’C1A2A3G4A5A6C7) which form the most stable self-organized right-handed helical structures because of the favorable purine-purine stacking interactions. (vi) Stacking pattern at each of the dinucleotide steps show that the base-base nearest neighbor stacking interactions depend solely upon the sequence contexts of the respective ssDNAs (1 – 4) and ssRNAs (5 – 8). Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
