Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

ASSESMENT OF THE EFFECTS OF HOUSE COUNTRY MACROECONOMICS ON PERFORMANCE CROSS LISTED FIRMS IN EAST AFRICA

    Get PDF
This study makes assessment of the effects of host country macroeconomic factors on the performance of cross listed firms in East Africa. It uses quarterly time series from March 2010 to December 2020. The study used stock prices of five Kenyan companies that are cross listed in the stock markets of Uganda and Tanzania. The overall model capturing the impact of the macroeconomic factors on the average prices of stocks shows that interest rate exerts positive and significant impact on the stock market performance, while, inflation has negative and significant effects on the stock market performance in both Uganda and Tanzania. GDP is statistically not significant in influencing the stock prices in both countries. On the other hand, the model that captures individual effect provides mixed result in both Uganda and Tanzania, with the negative effect of inflation reported in three firms in Uganda and two firms in Tanzania; while, a positive effect is found in one firm listed in Uganda and two firms listed in Tanzania. Similarly, the effect of interest rate is positive for three firms in both Uganda and Tanzania; and it is negative in one firm listed in both USE and DSE. GDP negatively affect stock prices of two firms in Tanzania and positively affect the prices of one firm in Uganda. &nbsp

Examining Power Outages and Their Impacts on Electricity Consumers in Sikonge: Strengthening TANESCO-Local Government Emergency Collaboration in Tanza

Frequent and prolonged power outages remain a major challenge for electricity consumers in rural Tanzania, affecting households, businesses, and institutional operations. This study examined the patterns of power outages, evaluated the effectiveness of TANESCO–local government emergency response systems, and assessed the impacts of outages on electricity consumers in Sikonge District. Guided by Systems and Contingency theories, the study adopted a descriptive survey design with a purposive sample of 100 respondents, including household heads, business operators, and institutional representatives. Non-parametric tests and polynomial regression were employed due to non-normal data distributions. Findings revealed that outages in Sikonge are frequent, unpredictable, and often prolonged beyond six hours, with minimal prior notice or follow-up communication. Polynomial regression results showed a curvilinear relationship between outage patterns and consumer impacts, where initial increases in outages sharply intensified negative effects, but marginal impacts diminished at higher outage levels. Emergency response efficiency was strongly negatively correlated with consumer impacts, highlighting that timely and coordinated interventions reduce hardships. The study concludes that improving TANESCO–local government collaboration through real-time communication, coordinated emergency protocols, and strategic resource allocation can significantly enhance service reliability. It recommends targeted interventions including technological monitoring, consumer preparedness programs, and context-sensitive strategies tailored to rural operational challenges. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers and utilities seeking to minimize the socio-economic consequences of power outages in rural Tanzania

The Nexus between Capital Structure and Financial Performance of Banks: The Influence of COVID 19 in Tanzania

The purpose of this study was to examine the nexus between capital structure and financial performance of commercial banks in Tanzania. Panel data were used to conduct the empirical study which was extracted from the annual reports of 25 selected commercial banks for the period from 2016 to 2020. Descriptive statistics, correlations, fixed effect, and random effect models were used for the data analysis. Then, with the results of the Hausman Specification Test, the fixed effect model was considered as the most suitable model to examine the relationship between capital structure and ROA.  Random effect model was considered as the most suitable model to examine the relationship between capital structure and ROE. This study was one of the very few studies which have investigated the nexus between capital structure and financial performance of commercial banks in Tanzania under COVID 19 impacts which gives the contribution to the existing finance literature

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Credit Risk and Commercial Banks Performance in Tanzania: a Panel Data Analysis

    Get PDF
The study was meant to find the relationship between the credit risk and bank performance as measured by return on asset. Regression model was used to develop the relationship between the indicators of credit risk and bank performance, the credit risk indicators have produced negative correlation which indicate the higher the credit risk the lower the bank performance. Regression model was statistically fit producing R square and adjusted R square of 70% and 64% respectively. The study recommends the bank understudy to increase the capital reserve to protect the bank for the future losses and to increase bank credit risk management techniques. Keywords: credit risk, performance, regression
