No full textFaSt-SWOT consists of two multi-platform experiments conducted to validate the first observations from the SWOT satellite mission in the Balearic Sea. The field-work combines gliders, drifter observations, ship data (CTD, ADCP and a moving vessel profiler), HF radar, and mooring data together with satellite observations and numerical simulations. Comparing the sea level response to pressure and wind forcing of two barotropic models: Validation with tide gauge and altimetry data
No full textThe sea level output from two barotropic models, Hindcast of Dynamic Processes of the Ocean and Coastal Areas of Europe (HIPOCAS) and Dynamic Atmospheric Correction (DAC), are compared and evaluated on the basis of coastal tide gauges (TG) and TOPEX/POSEIDON measurements in the Mediterranean Sea and the NE Atlantic Ocean for the period 1993–2001. Both models reduce the observed sea level variance more than the classical inverted barometer correction. However, differences between the models arise for different regions and frequency bands. In coastal areas, Hindcast of Dynamic Processes of the Ocean and Coastal Areas of Europe (HIPOCAS) reproduces observed (TG recorded) sea level better than DAC (residual variance of 70.81 ± 0.69 cm2 versus 74.05 ± 0.68 cm2). This is particularly true in the Atlantic Iberian coasts (49.58 ± 1.09 cm2 versus 68.53 ± 1.12 cm2), where HIPOCAS is able to reproduce a wind-generated signal probably linked with seasonal upwelling. The exception is the northern Adriatic, where HIPOCAS gives higher residual variance than DAC (118.80 ± 0.60 cm2 versus 107.15 ± 0.60 cm2). At low frequencies (T > 20 days) the atmospherically induced coastal sea level is better reproduced by HIPOCAS in the entire domain (23.43 ± 0.34 cm2 versus 32.35 ± 0.33 cm2). At high frequencies (T < 20 days), DAC and HIPOCAS perform on average similarly (37 ± 0.5 cm2). In the open ocean, both corrections provide equivalent results (60 ± 5 cm2 residual altimeter variance). Our general recommendation would be to use either DAC or HIPOCAS for the correction of altimetry, and to use HIPOCAS for coastal studies aiming at separating the atmospheric contribution to sea level variability from the steric and mass contributions

No full textIn the article the author analyses various sources of inspiration noticeable in the works of Ananda Devi. Considering the writer’s background, her native island of Mauritius, a multi-ethnic multi-lingual and multi-cultural island, various cultural inspirations are noticeable in her works. The author of this article focuses on the novelist’s prose and analyses the cultural references rooted in Indian, European, African and Creole cultures. The aim of this analysis is also to describe the intertextual relations that exist between some of Ananda Devi’s texts and the works of Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Arthur Rimbaud or Malcolm de Chazal, T. S. Eliot, Toni Morrison and J. M. Coetzee. In the analysis, the author draws on the research of Homi Bhabha and Gérard Genette

No full textInspired by Devi’s Ceux du large (2017) and by authors connected to her, a performance has been created by the author, who was to conduct an oral creative workshop among whose participants were young immigrants. Trying to take into account both dimensions of such an artistic but also human experience, the text points out the links between Ananda Devi’s words and the young immigrants’ ones, and also the influence of having read them on the way to lead the workshop. But, above all, it shows how such a poetic writing is necessary not to reduce migration to a simple and measurable fact.Inspirée par des pages de Ceux du large (Ananda Devi, 2017) et des pages d’autres auteurs avec lesquels Ananda Devi est en lien, une performance été faite par un artiste-chercheur devant aussi animer un atelier de création sonore et à la même période. Parmi les participants se trouvaient de jeunes migrants. Essayant de prendre en compte toutes les dimensions d’une telle expérience aussi bien humaine qu’artistique, le texte fait apparaître les liens entre les mots d’Ananda Devi et ceux des jeunes migrants, et aussi l’influence de les avoir lus sur la façon de conduire l’atelier. Mais, par-dessus tout, il s’agit de montrer combien une telle écriture poétique est nécessaire pour ne pas réduire la migration à un simple fait mesurable

Fantasy in Ananda Devi’s Novels
No full textIn the article, the author analyses the fantasy elements noticeable in some of Ananda Devi’s novels. In her first novels as well as in her recent ones, the writer resorts to solutions from the fantasy genre. In L’Arbre fouet, Moi, l’interdite, La Vie de Joséphin le Fou, Pagli, Soupir, Indian tango, Les Jours vivants, Manger l’autre and in Le Jour des caméléons, the Mauritian novelist presents mysterious incipits and open-ended, dreamlike endings, introduces hybridised, often insane characters half animal half human, describes metamorphoses and transformations of man into animal, mentions imaginary sobriquets, ghosts. The aim of the analysis is also to try to explain for what purpose the writer uses fantasy in her work. In the analysis, the author also draws on the research of T. Todorov, P.-G. Castex, L. Vax and V. Tritter
Sea level variability in the Mediterranean Sea during the 1990s on the basis to two 2d and one 3d model
No full textThe sea level rise in the 1990s at the Mediterranean Sea as evidenced by satellite altimetry is studied with the aid of ocean models. Two barotropic two dimensional (2d) models and one three dimensional (3d) model are used. Both 2d models indicate that the contribution of direct atmospheric forcing causes localised trends of up to 2 mm/yr. The 3d model successfully describes the evolution in temperature of the upper and intermediate waters. However the salinity changes are not well described. The steric contribution of sea level rise during this period is in places in excess of 10 mm/yr. Notably oceanic circulation is also found to contribute to sea level trends by up to ? 3 mm/yr. Thus the observed sea level changes in the 1990s are better understood. The exceptional nature of the sea level behaviour in 1990s, especially in the eastern basin, when compared with previous decades is confirmed on the basis of both the 2d and the 3d models
