An Authenticity Analysis of Reading Materials in an EFL Textbook

    No full text
This research examines the authenticity of reading materials in the English for Nusantara untuk SMP/MTs Kelas IX textbook, using Pinner’s (2014) authenticity continuum theory as the analytical framework. The research employs a descriptive qualitative design through document analysis of five selected reading materials. Seventeen indicators across four dimensions, individual relevance, target language community, classroom applicability, and real-world connection, were used to assess the materials. The findings reveal that the textbooks perform well in terms of structural and pedagogical authenticity, demonstrated by reading materials that are aligned with the curriculum, appropriate to the students' level, and engaging. However, the analysis also revealed a lack of cultural references, real-world content, and opportunities for student interaction, which are crucial for developing communicative competence and cross-cultural awareness. Overall, the textbook offers partially authentic reading materials. It is recommended that future textbook revisions include richer cultural content and more interactive tasks to connect language learning with real-life communication and global contexts

Unmasking the Power of Trigger Intensity in Federated Learning: Exploring Trigger Intensities in Backdoor Attacks

    No full text
Federated learning allows a multitude of contributors to collaboratively build a deep learning model, all while keeping their individual training data private from one another. However, it is not immune to security flaws such as backdoor attacks in which malevolent adversaries manipulate the global model to trigger specific behaviors. In this paper, we investigate the impact of trigger intensity in backdoor attacks within the federated learning setting. We challenge the conventional requirement of training and testing on the same trigger intensity and propose a novel approach of training on a weak trigger and testing on a stronger trigger. Our experiments demonstrate that this technique proves capable of enhancing backdoor attack performance and robustness and might open the possibility for invisible backdoors during the testing phase. The ability to customize trigger visibility empowers attackers to craft stealthier and more potent attacks, making trigger detection challenging. Our findings complement existing state-of-the-art attacks, providing attackers with greater options to tailor their attack to their intended target. We discuss the implications of our research and highlight the importance of developing effective defense mechanisms to counter backdoor vulnerabilities in federated learning systems. Overall, our study contributes to the advancement of backdoor attack understanding in FL and provides valuable insights into trigger intensity as a critical factor for attack customization and resilience. By exploring new avenues for stronger and more stealthy attacks, we contribute to the ongoing efforts to safeguard AI systems’ privacy and reliability in real-world applications.Computer Science | Software Technolog

Wahyuni, Aulia Nur. (2024). Students’ Difficulties in Applying Formulaic Expressions in Self-Introduction in 7th Grade Junior High School. Final Project. English Education. Faculty of Languages and Arts of Universitas Negeri Semarang. Supervisor Pasca Kalisa, S. Pd., M. A., M. Pd. Keywords : formulaic expression; speaking; difficulties; self-introduction This research aims to investigate the difficulties faced by 7th-grade junior high school students who have just started studying English as a compulsory subject in applying formulaic expressions in self-introduction. This research used a qualitative-descriptive approach. This research involved 100 students who participated by filling out a questionnaire, and 20 students were asked to be interviewed. Data was obtained using questionnaire sheets and interviews. The participants were asked to fill out a closed-ended questionnaire according to the difficulties they faced, and then the interviewee proceeded to answer five basic questions. The findings of this research indicate there are three main difficulties faced by students when applying formulaic expressions in self-introduction. The first is that students have difficulty understanding formulaic expressions in self- introduction because of the limited vocabulary they have; the second is that problems remembering formulaic expressions can hinder students’ ability to communicate fluently; and the third is that students have difficulties in grammatical aspects. Thus, this research explains further about students' difficulties in using formulaic expressions when introducing themselves

Numeracy is essential for students to achieve academic success and develop practical problem-solving abilities in their daily lives. This study aims to investigate the integration of numeracy into the teaching practices of different lessons by elementary school and kindergarten teachers in Semarang, Indonesia. The data of this qualitative research were acquired from 26 teachers using a qualitative technique, which involved an open-ended questionnaire and the analysis of lesson plans. The result of the study shows that only two of the four components of numeracy were known by the teachers. Domain I, which pertains to quantitative information, is the most prominent. Still, Domain II, which relates to spatial information, and Domain IV, which encompasses strategies, techniques, and tools, are noticeably lacking. The study emphasizes the need to provide well-rounded teacher training that covers all aspects of numeracy in order to improve the quality of numeracy instruction. The implications indicate the need for specific professional development programs to solve these gaps, thereby enhancing students’ numeracy skills and academic achievement.   Keywords: application of numeracy components, elementary education, numerac
