    No full text
The discussion between modernism and post-modernism has brought about several questions that we must answer in order to have an overview of both movements, once we are able to understand what the first has represented, we can better situate the second. Taking this into consideration, our aim is to analyze in which ways the contemporary The hours, written by the north-American author Michael Cunningham, appropriates the earlier Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf. Thus, the aim of this study is to discuss these questions, verifying the parodic between the two texts. Furthermore, our intention is to investigate another important discussion: the time, verifying the possibel relations between history and fiction. Lastly, our attention focuses on the construction of the ex-centric characters, examining how the discourse of these characters is built in Cunningham's novel

This dissertation aims to study six short stories - The Sphynx, A Tale of Jerusalem, The Devil in the Belfry, Mistification, The Spectacles, and Some Words with a Mummy - by the American fictionist, poet, and critic Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), world wide known as the father of the modern short story, in order to analyze how the author builds humor and satire and to what extent they constitute an ambivalent satire to his social millieu. The analyses reveal the existence of the author's compromise with the society of his time, which is manifested in his fictional creation by means of the satire and criticism of the exaggerations of XIXth century American ideology.

Finalmente, discutimos a pluralidade temática da poesia nerudiana e apontamos a maneira peculiar com a qual o autor usa diversas técnicas de expressão, mesclando, contrapondo, justapondo, modificando e brincando com diversos estilos, diversas formas e diversas vozes em seus poemasThis Doctoral research has as its main goal to show the plurality of Pablo Neruda’s poetry (1904-1973), Chilean poet and Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. In our investigation, done according to the specialized bibliography on the area, we used the methodological procedures of thematic critics, intending to carry out a formal stylistic survey in order to show the plural poetry of the poet. Always working specifically with the original texts (in order to do not miss important characteristics inherent to the idiom, like the sound, images, specific symbols of the Spanish Language) we also concerned ourselves in representing the literary styles presented in Neruda’s work, Finally, we discuss the thematic plurality of Neruda’s poetry and point out the peculiar way in which the author uses diverse techniques of expression, mixing, opposing, juxtaposing, modifying and playing with diverse styles, forms and voices in his poemsCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Based on FF’s, HB’s and AM’s thought, this dissertation offers a postcolonial reading of the work of the Brazilian writer Gastão Cruls (1888-1959) and examines his texts in the light of his critical stance against the colonization and neocolonization of Brazil. It also places Cruls, together with Euclides da Cunha, as one of the most important writers – and maybe the most important in his time – who revealed our national reality, especially of the north and northeast regions of the country. This dissertation also examines some of Cruls’s short stories with the lenses of the Decadent movement and compares them to the work of other writers, such as Augusto dos Anjos, Alain Fournier and Oscar Wilde. It stresses the importance of Cruls’s decadent texts and claims that they have not received the attention they deserve, as is also the case for most of his texts. Therefore, by intertwining a postcolonial perspective, that reveals Cruls’s critical view of the historical and emerging social reality of his country, with a decadent perspective, that elicits his singular literary response to the aesthetic paradigms of the Brazilian burgeois society of his time, this dissertation presents Gastão Cruls as a critical author that represents an almost unexplored aspect of the Brazilian Modernist period.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
