Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The surviving aural spaces : auditory awareness and the sonar-body's practices of space

In the chaos of contemporary life, it is more and more necessary to learn how to listen: listening to people, to nature, but also to places, to spaces, to their walls (parois). Walls do not only have ears; they speak. They speak of an unheard (in-ouïe) about humanity, about vibrating and whispering spaces. In the clash of our remembering, it is necessary to stretch the ear in order to become conscious of our universe, or our aural spaces. My art practice focuses on sound and aural spatial awareness. I create sound journeys, meditations, situations, field recordings, testimonies and stories that explore the silence’s tenuousness and the resonance of listening areas. While listening to the background noise and the echo that fill in the places, I am moving in an attempt to expose the Surviving Aural Spaces. At the heart of a sonic world, various contemporary artists are engaged in dynamics of referencing (renvoi) to the listening and to the body. The surviving takes form in sound traces, sound residues and sound fossils, that all witness our journeys as well as landscapes resisting to their own disappearance. In order to hearing those sound residues, to seeing the surviving of aural spaces, I am making use of participants whom discover their auditory awareness and perform a sonar-body movement, a movement that resonates between the body, the space and the information collected from the past. The sonar-body contacts the invisible, touches the echo of spaces, thus revealing our touched imaginary. The present thesis relates my journey in the universe of sound, the crossing of my personal practice, of my works as well as my narratives. It also gives the leading role to the works, described and studied from the angle of auditory awareness and the surviving of aural spaces. It goes through the creation of various artists, from John Cage to Brandon Labelle, via Pauline Oliveros and Alvin Lucier. It also browses the thinking of many theorists, including Didier Anzieu, Raymond Murray Schafer, Georges Didi-Huberman and Michel Serres. Let’s listen to them, to see

A growing body of feminist film history research has critically analyzed gender inequalities in film criticism and production in Quebec (Carrière, 1983; Denault, 1997; Lamartine, 2010, Armatage & al., 1991, Marchessault, 1995; Contogouris, Ravary-Pilon, 2022; Saint-Pierre, 2022; Maule, 2023). However, the legacy of feminist video production, and more specifically women’s video collectives, has received far less attention. From the early 1970s, video was considered an “instrument” that was both witness and agent in a dynamic political and cultural moment in Quebec. While early video was a used for multiple purposes across varied contexts, the medium was rapidly taken up by women seeking to forge a creative space apart from the Quebec film industry widely dominated by men at the time (Duguet, 1981; Ross, 1984; Marchessault, 1995; Fleckinger, 2011). This research-creation thesis brings together a creative digital reactivation of the archive of Video Femmes (a women’s video collective established in Quebec City in 1973), with a written thesis. The creative project takes the form of a thematic dossier published on the digital platform of the Cinémathèque Québécoise (CQ) since June 2024. Entitled « Vidéo Femmes: fragments d'un héritage féministe (1973-1993), » the dossier addresses the early years of Vidéo Femmes (VF) through selected archives including video works and excerpts, transcriptions of interviews with the filmmakers, photographs and posters. My research highlights the historical importance of the works produced by Vidéo Femmes (1973-2015), notably the collective’s extensive and little-known catalogue that engages with second wave feminist activism in Quebec and attests to the formal and thematic explorations of early women’s video in Quebec. Developed through a research-creation approach (Sawchuk et Chapman, 2012), this thesis is grounded in oral sources that are set in relation with feminist scholarship and practices of digital archiving (Juhasz, 2006 ; Bociurkiw, 2018 ; Wernimont, 2019). This study contributes to research on the critical potential of feminist cinematic archives, and has the broader ambition of encourage new practices of reflexivity in relation to cultural archives

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

From movie theatre to exhibition and beyond : appropriation and reinterpretation of cinema by visual artists 1986-2016

Due to technological changes and the rising generation of the 80s and 90s, cinema became a main strategy in visual arts, while impacting and transforming the exhibition space. Then some questions may be asked. Particularly, what cinema does to the exhibition space? Cinema and exhibition are two different spaces with distinct ways of functioning. This thesis, focusing on an international corpus from 1986 to 2016, goes back over the historiography of this subject and analyses the effects of the gradual bursting of cinema in the visual arts, such as modifications in the exhibition space (and the moving of the cinematic device - screen, projector, movie theatre, screening, etc.), changes of the viewer's outlook (from spectator to visitor), etc. These artists do not try to reproduce cinema in the exhibition, but on the contrary, intend to question its relationship to the artwork. In the end, the shift from cinema to exhibition reveals a desire to reach the public space, and, outside the cultural institutions, to enthrall a different audience. Such practices lead to consider the social impact of the artwork. This thesis also aspires to replace the works of these artists into an interdisciplinary history of art, at the junction of performing arts, the works of the first video artists and experimental cinema

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Imprecise itineraries and its possible images : elements toward an aesthetics of mobility

This doctoral dissertation examines how mobility can become the basis for creative process in the field of moving image. I propose a framework where the open-mindedness characteristic of voluntary mobility is associated with an openness of artistic language. As a set of physical and psychic displacements among different geographies as well as among different cultures, languages and traditions, mobility can shape both personal experience and artistic production directly related to improvisation and chance. This nomadic form of thinking, open to improvisation, unpredictability and risk, also affects the forms of artworks that are in turn open to several ways of display as well as different interpretations. This study reveals how geopolitical and artistic borders stimulate and affect each other reciprocally and dialectically. It encourages us to reflect on the issue of mobility while simultaneously participating in the expansion of the moving image’s boundaries. Through a practice-based research around notions of mobility and creation in context, I examine embedded elements of different stages of film, video and installation production, using personal artworks and a body of references. By articulating certain devices for creation and display in order to simultaneously combine the process of the artwork’s production with the experience of the displacement, a particular aesthetic emerges, based on mobility and a direct experience of the world.

Who speaks? : poetics and politics of enunciation in the Age of the Anthropocene

The issue a politics of enunciation and the formal devices that make it possible, structures many debates about art. In 1972, Gilles Deleuze said to Michel Foucault, "you have taught us the indignity of speaking for others," opening with others the vast feminist, queer and postcolonial questioning that still stands until today. When we then wondered "who speaks", a series of issues opened up, questioning the history of documentary cinema, pronominal writings, the mechanisms of the gaze, as well as the instances that structure democratic speech, the legitimacy of the researcher, identity politics, science and its procedures, psychoanalysis, and so on. Nowadays, it is the silent voice of the world that catches up with us, whereas with the Anthropocene era, devices of inclusion of non-humans (including animals, plants, objects, etc.) proliferate, calling for translations, eco-diplomacy, attention, spokesmanship. How can we take into account what they have to say to us? In other words, what does the Anthropocene do to standpoint epistemologies and to the question "Who speaks". From these questions worked through many artworks (mainly moving images and the assembleist turn of art) and from the horizon of a democracy more than human, this path will lead us to consider the space of art as the privileged space from which to reformulate a politics of enunciation that would no longer be based solely on a morality of the minority, but on a policy of silence and of immeasurable

The space between [body/machine] : the Princess and her Mac

    No full text
For the tale of the adventures of a princess and her Mac, written with the social network Facebook for three years, we travel through what these characters represent in this volatile and moving area of their meetings. The Princess and her Mac includes both a fictional character, a real body and machines. The Princess opens with a female point of view, playing a becoming. The Mac refers as much to the Apple brand that sells Macintosh computers at the French slang abbreviation. We will try to hypothesize that art seems to materialize particular spaces between body and machine. This title Between [body / machine] characterizes these spaces we call ”floating” with reference to the notions of moucharabieh and japenese Ma. Indeed, the understanding of the spatial organization and the oriental conception of space-times appear a way to consider this ”between” body / machine as a space of resistance. Above all, it would promote understanding of our place in the world to act on the world. From a personal artistic practice we will question the emerging needs of spaces, floating and extension. Indeed, only our presence make visible relational links "between" the information and journeys, "between" our bodies and identities. This research attempts to show that the strength of the networks, in my artistic practice is to accompany the variability of body and our perceptions in real time. Art materializes these spaces between as a form of resistance, in front of the proliferation of connected objects. The between [body / machine] makes possible impregnation time and meetings. The rhythm between body and machine becomes vital, cell in which we now have to learn to draw
