    The hill-fort of Sutilija: new knowledge based on archaeological finds collected by non-invasive research

    Gradinsko utvrđenje na brdu Sutilija koje sa sjeverozapadne strane nadvisuje trogirsko Malo polje, jedno je od najznačajnijih lokaliteta za poznavanje prapovijesti i protopovijesti trogirsko- kaštelanskog područja. To se najbolje ogleda u masivnosti osipine bedema, kompleksnosti vidljivih struktura i visokoj koncentraciji površinskih nalaza, uključujući i importirane keramike. Unatoč tome, ali i zbog devastacije koju je lokalitet doživio tijekom moderne eksploatacije tehničko-građevnog kamena, njegova je materijalna baština gotovo u potpunosti nepoznata. U radu se donosi pregled dosadašnjih istraživanja nedestruktivnim metodama na brdu Sutilija koje su za cilj imale dokumentiranje zatečenog stanja te proširivanje znanstvenih spoznaja o značajkama i značenju nalazišta. Poseban je naglasak stavljen na analizu različitih kategorija površinskih nalaza, od prapovijesne lokalne lončarije, amfora i ostalih keramičkih importa do drugih nalaza osobne, odnosno praktične uporabe. Prethodno nepoznati nalazi sugeriraju s jedne strane širu dinamiku antropogene aktivnosti na ovom lokalitetu, a s druge gospodarsko-kulturne promjene koje ovo nesumnjivo značajno željeznodobno središte doživljava u 4. st. pr. n. e. Rezultat je to sve aktivnije regionalne trgovine i multikulturalne interakcije, koja se odvijala u kontekstu protopovijesne preobrazbe srednjodalmatinskih željeznodobnih zajednica.The hill-fort on the Sutilija hill, towering over Trogir’s Malo polje from the north-west, is one of the most important sites for understanding the prehistory and protohistory of the Trogir-Kaštela area. This is best reflected in the huge volumes of collapsed ramparts, the complexity of visible structures and the high concentration of surface finds, including imported pottery. Despite this, but also due to the devastation of the site during the modern exploitation of technical-building stone, its material heritage is almost completely unknown. The paper provides an overview of previous research using non-destructive methods on the Sutilija hill, which aimed to document the present state and expand scientific knowledge about the properties and significance of the site. Particular emphasis is given to analysis of various categories of surface finds, from prehistoric local pottery, amphorae and other pottery imports to other finds for personal and/or practical use. Previously unknown finds suggest a broader dynamics of anthropogenic activity at this site, as well as economic and cultural changes that this undoubtedly significant Iron Age centre experienced in the fourth century BCE. It was the result of increasingly active regional trade and multicultural interaction, which took place in the context of protohistoric transformation of Central Dalmatian Iron Age communities

    U podmorju manjih otočića Sv. Fumija i Kraljevac koji se nalaze uz južnu obalu otoka Čiova, izvršen je sustavni podmorski arheološki pregled. Pronađena je priobalna konstrukcija antičke vile, ležište rožnjaka te pojedinačni nalazi ulomaka antičkih amfora raspoređeni na širem prostoru pregledanog područja.Systematic underwater archaeological survey was carried out in the area of the islets of Sv. Fumija and Kraljevac, which are located along the southern coast of the island of Čiovo. A coastal construction of an ancient villa, a chert bed, and individual finds of ancient amphora fragments were found, distributed over a wider area of the examined segment

    Tijekom listopada 2019. godine u sklopu međunarodnoga projekta „Trogir Through Time“ – znanstveno-istraživačkoga projekta u suradnji Muzeja grada Trogira, Instituta za arheologiju u Zagrebu i Austrijskoga arheološkog instituta Austrijske akademije za znanost u Beču, izvršen je terenski pregled te fotogrametrijsko i topografsko dokumentiranje devet prapovijesnih nalazišta na širem trogirskom području (naselja Seget Gornji i Bristivica općine Seget te Blizna Gornja i Vinišće općine Marina). Riječ je o području sjeverozapadno od gradine Sutilija te s kompleksom Sutilija povezanim utvrđenjem Velika gradina i Baturova gomila u Baradićima kao i većim gradinskim nalazištima: Čurkovac iznad Bristivice s utvrđenjima Ćudine i Domazeti u njezinom neposrednoj okruženju, Grad iznad Blizne Gonje i s njom povezana utvrđenja Brig i Gradina te Oriješćak kod Vinišća. It is the area northwest of the Sutilija hillfort and the related enclosures of Velika Gradina and Baturova Gomila in Baradići, and the large hillfort sites Čurkovac above Bristivica with the enclosures of Ćudine and Domazeti in its immediate vicinity, Grad above Blizna Gonja and its related enclosures Brig and Gradina, and Oriješćak near Vinišće. The paper presents the research results with an introduction part describing in detail the earlier state of research

    New findings of Neanderthal artefacts in Croatia: the lithic assemblage from Malo polje-Krban, Trogir

    Članak donosi rezultate litičke analize materijala s nalazišta Malo polje – Krban kod Trogira. Među približno šest tisuća litičkih nalaza prevladavaju geofakti, ali prisutni su i artefakti koji su podrobnije analizirani. Artefakti uglavnom potječu iz razdoblja srednjeg paleolitika (centripetalne jezgre, strugala), dok su oni potencijalno datirani u gornji paleolitik rijetki. S obzirom na ostale nalaze i nalazišta srednjega paleolitika u bližoj i daljoj okolici, ovaj lokalitet dodatno potvrđuje prisutnost neandertalaca na širem prostoru Trogira i Kaštela, što je i značajka širega jadranskog prostora.The article provides the results of lithic analysis of the material from the site of Malo polje-Krban, near Trogir. Among the approximately six thousand lithic finds, geofacts predominate, but artefacts, which have been studied in more detail, are also present. The artefacts date mostly to the Middle Palaeolithic (centripetal cores, scrapers), while those potentially dated to the Upper Palaeolithic are rare. With regard to the other Middle Palaeolithic finds and sites in the immediate and distant surroundings, this site confirms the presence of Neanderthals in the vicinity of Trogir and Kaštela, which is also the case in the wider Adriatic area

    Archaeometry of Bronze-Age ceramics from the area of Trogir

    U radu se donose rezultati arheometrijske analize lončarije s nekoliko brončanodobnih nalazišta na području srednje Dalmacije. Provedena je mineraloško-petrografska analiza 38 tankih izbrusaka keramike metodom optičke mikroskopije, dok je na manjem broju uzoraka mineralni sastav određen metodom rendgenske difrakcije na prahu. Analizom rezultata dobivene su informacije o karakteristikama glinovite sirovine, podaci o vrsti i udjelu neplastičnih primjesa, namjerno dodavanih glini, ali i informacije o tehnikama izrade i temperaturama pečenja keramike. Istraživanje je pokazalo da su brončanodobni lončari vjerojatno koristili lokalnu, lako dostupnu glinu i da su joj dodavali neplastične primjese: kalcit, sedimentne stijene i grog. Razmatranjem tehnoloških izbora uočene su promjene u lončarskim praksama između prve i posljednje faze brončanog doba. Također, razvidna je dugotrajna tradicija upotrebe kalcita koji u posljednjoj fazi brončanog doba postaje dominantna primjesa. S druge strane, od ranoga brončanog doba lončari smjesi dodaju i grog, samostalno ili u kombinaciji s kalcitom te rjeđe usitnjenim sedimentnim stijenama, a takva se praksa postupno napušta od kasnoga brončanog doba. Stoga, rezultati ukazuju na vezu između odabira primjesa i kronoloških obrazaca, odnosno takva praksa mogla je biti povezana s periodičnim utjecajima različitih društvenih faktora.The paper presents the results of archaeometric analysis of pottery from several Bronze Age sites in the area of central Dalmatia. A mineralogico-petrographic analysis of 38 thin sections of pottery was carried out using the method of optical microscopy, while the mineral composition of a smaller number of samples was determined using the X-ray powder diffraction method. The research provided data on the characteristics of the clay raw material, the type and proportion of non-plastic tempers intentionally added to the clay, and information on the production techniques and firing temperatures. The research showed that Bronze Age potters very likely used local, easily available clay and non-plastic tempering material: calcite, sedimentary rocks and grog. Through consideration of technological choices, changes in pottery practices between the first and last phases of the Bronze Age were observed. The long-term tradition of using calcite, which becomes a dominant tempering material in the last phase of the Bronze Age, is evident. On the other hand, from the Early Bronze Age, potters used grog, either alone or in combination with calcite and, more rarely, crushed sedimentary rocks, and this practice seems to have been slowly abandoned after the Late Bronze Age. The results therefore indicate a correlation between selection of tempering material and chronological patterns, that is, such a practice could have been related to the periodic influences of various social factors

    Methodology and Archaeometry (MetArh) is an annual scientific conference organized since 2013 by the Department of Archaeology of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, and the Croatian Archaeological Society. The goal of the conference is to entice interdisciplinarity, critical thinking, new insights and approaches as well as new theoretical frameworks in contemporary archaeological science. This volume of Proceedings from the 11th and 12th Scientific Conferences Methodology and Archaeometry brings together a selection of papers that explore diverse methodological approaches in contemporary archaeological research, and the application of archaeometric techniques in the documentation, analysis, and interpretation of archaeological data. The 11th MetArh conference was held on the 7th and 8th of December 2023, and the 12th MetArh conference took place on the 28th of November 2024 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. Both events brought together researchers from several countries who presented recent results and discussed current challenges in fieldwork, analytical procedures, and interpretative frameworks. Together, these contributions demonstrate the growing importance of methodological and technological innovation in archaeology.
