No full textProfessor Humberto Bortolossi holds a degree in Mathematics from UEM, a Master's degree in Mathematics from IMPA and a PhD in Mathematics from PUC-Rio. He is an Associate Professor I of the Fluminense Federal University. He is one of the great references in Brazil when it comes to GeoGebra. He was the first translator of GeoGebra for the Portuguese of Brazil, helping a lot to publicize and implement the use of the software in the country. Certainly, it should also be a guest author to write an article for this issue. However, at the time this edition began to be produced, Humberto was not in a position to write. So we chose to have an online conversation with him and transcribe it.O Professor Humberto Bortolossi é Licenciado em Matemática pela UEM, mestre em Matemática pelo IMPA e doutor em Matemática pela PUC-Rio. É professor Associado I da Universidade Federal Fluminense. Ele é uma das grandes referências no Brasil quando o assunto é GeoGebra. Foi o primeiro tradutor do GeoGebra para o português do Brasil, ajudando muito a divulgar e implementar o uso do software no País. Certamente, também deveria ser um autor convidado para escrever um artigo para essa edição. Todavia, no momento que a revista começou a ser produzida, o Humberto não estava com condições de escrever. Para tanto, busca-se uma articulação entre a produção virtual do autor no Blogessinger e os estudos acerca da identidade cultural na pós-modernidade de Hall (2005) e Bauman (2004, 2010). Faremos, assim, uma análise dos escritos de Gessinger, destacando algumas características do autor relacionadas a estilo, além de aspectos culturais e de contemporaneidade presentes em suas publicações virtuais.This paper proposes an analysis of the contemporary subject in Humberto Gessinger’s virtual production. Therefore, we make a link between the virtual production of the author in Blogessinger and the studies about cultural identity in postmodernity Hall (2005) and Bauman (2004, 2010). Thus we will make an analysis of the writings of Gessinger, highlighting some features related to the author's style, and cultural aspects of contemporaneity presented in his virtual publications
Phraseological and lexical difficulties in Spanish-speaking witnesses' testimonies: a descriptive study of Court interpreter performance
No full textAlthough numerous research studies have been conducted on the accuracy of interpreters’ performance during legal proceedings, the cross-cultural and cross-linguistic aspects that might represent difficulties in the cognitive process of interpretation have not been well explored. Beyond pure linguistic skills, technical competence, and mental ability, court interpreters should also possess a thorough knowledge of the two cultures in which their working languages exist, including political, social, and ethnic differences. In order to perform adequately, and therefore guarantee equal access to the judicial system for Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals, court interpreters must be competent in understanding and managing the cultural and linguistic context that permeates through the communicative event. This paper presents the results of a descriptive, empirical study of Spanish-speaking witnesses’ testimonies in domestic violence cases at the New Jersey Superior Court. Drawing on an analysis of the discourse of Spanish-speaking witnesses and the interpreters’ rendering of phraseological and lexical units such as idioms, slang, and collocations, this paper argues that the lack of cross-cultural competence on the part of the interpreter may hinder the production of an accurate and faithful interpretation of such expressions, which convey cultural and linguistic notions that are complicated to transfer from the source to the target language.M.A.Includes bibliographical referencesby Humberto O.
