Reciprocal root locus approach to path planning for multiple mobile robots

    No full text
The path planning problem for multiple mobile robots is addressed in this study. Given the available mobile robots and the tasks to be executed, at the highest planning level a first problem is the assignment of tasks to robot or AGV, the second is path planning. In this case a quickplanning is desirable for computing feasible paths in a given workspace without congestion. The proposed solution is based on the theory of conformal transformations that can be used to map the given workspace in a more appealing geometric setting. Some examples are considered to illustrate the proposed technique and its efficienc

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The Challenge of Disease-Modifying Therapies in Parkinson's Disease: Role of CSF Biomarkers.

    No full text
The development of disease modifying strategies in Parkinson's disease (PD) largely depends on the ability to identify suitable populations after accurate diagnostic work-up. Therefore, patient molecular profiling and disease subtyping are mandatory. Thus far, in clinical trials, PD has been considered to be a "single entity". Conversely, in front of the common feature of nigro-striatal degeneration, PD is pathogenically heterogeneous with a series of several biological and molecular pathways that differently contribute to clinical development and progression. Currently available diagnostic criteria for PD mainly rely on clinical features and imaging biomarkers, thus missing to identify the contribution of pathophysiological pathways, also failing to catch abnormalities occurring in the early stages of disease. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a promising source of biomarkers, with the high potential for reflecting early changes occurring in PD brain. In this review, we provide an overview on CSF biomarkers in PD, discussing their association with different molecular pathways involved either in pathophysiology or progression in detail. Their potential application in the field of disease modifying treatments is also discussed

A CAD tool for limit cycle prediction in nonlinear systems

    No full text
The analysis of nonlinear systems can be greatly improved by the use of computer software. In this paper an interactive, user-friendly, graphically oriented toolbox based on Matlab is presented. Nonlinear systems whose nonlinearity is given by a relay are considered, and stability of free and forced oscillations is analyzed using the methods by Hamel, Tsypkin and Paquet. Nonlinear systems with polynomial nonlinearity are also treated and analyzed using Hopf's theorem in the frequency domain. The structure of the code is described and some illustrative examples are presented to validate the software capabilities

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
