One Year of Dapaglifozin Add-On Therapy Ameliorates Surrogate Indexes of Insulin Resistance and Adiposity in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Introduction: This study investigates the effects of dapagliflozin on the visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), product of triglycerides and glucose (TyG) and triglycerides to HDL-cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D).
Methods: In this real-life study, dapaglifozin was added to metformin alone (group 1, no. 42) or insulin plus metformin (group 2, no. 58) in 100 T2D patients.
Results: In group 1, after 6 months of dapaglifozin addition, a significant decrease in BMI (p < 0.001), waist circumference (WC) (p < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (p = 0.009), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (p = 0.012), mean fasting blood glucose (FBG), post-breakfast glucose (PBG), post-lunch glucose (PLG) and post-dinner glucose (PDG) (all p < 0.001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), VAI (p = 0.020), LAP (p = 0.028), Tyg (p < 0.001), TG/HDL-C (p = 0.020) and glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) (p < 0.001) was observed compared to baseline. After 12 months a significant decrease in BMI (p < 0.001), WC (p = 0.006), SBP (p = 0.023), DBP (p = 0.005), mean FPG, PBG, PLG and PDG (all p < 0.001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), total cholesterol (p = 0.038), triglycerides (p = 0.026), VAI (p = 0.013), GPT (p < 0.001), LAP index (p = 0.024), Tyg index (p < 0.001) and TG/HDL-c ratio (p = 0.016) was observed compared to baseline. In group 2, after 6 months of dapaglifozin addition, a significant decrease in BMI (p < 0.001), WC (p < 0.001), SBP (p = 0.015), DBP (p = 0.007), mean FPG, PBG, PLG and PDG (all p < 0.001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), VAI (p = 0.040), LAP (p = 0.047), Tyg (p < 0.001), TG/HDL-C (p = 0.048) and GPT (p < 0.001) was observed compared to baseline. By contrast, after 12 months a significant decrease in BMI (p < 0.001), WC (p < 0.001), SBP (p = 0.001), DBP (p = 0.002), mean FPG, PBG, PLG and PDG (all p < 0.001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), GPT (p < 0.001) and Tyg index (p = 0.003) was observed compared to baseline.
Conclusions: Dapagliflozin treatment significantly reduced surrogate indexes of insulin resistance and adiposity in patients with T2D

No phenotypic differences for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) between women with and without type 1 diabetes mellitus
Context: Women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) have a higher prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) than the general population. Objective: The aim of this study was to clarify, in DM1 women with PCOS(PCOS-DM1), the influence of insulin therapy and glycemic control and evaluate the hormonal and phenotypic differences with age-matched and body mass index (BMI)-matched women with PCOS without diabetes. Design, Setting, and Patients: We evaluated 103 DM1 women with and without PCOS treated with intensive insulin therapy; 38 age-matched and BMI-matched women with PCOS without diabetes were compared in a cross-sectional study. Outcome Measurements: Clinical, anthropometric, and metabolic parameters were evaluated. Hormonal evaluation and ovary ultrasound were performed during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Results: Applying the diagnostic criteria of the Androgen Excess Society, 38 (36.89%) women with DM1 showed PCOS. The 38 PCOS-DM1 women showed no differences in treatment and glycemic control compared with DM1 women without PCOS. The only difference was a higher visceral adiposity index in PCOS-DM1 (1.21 ± 0.70 vs 0.90 ± 0.32; P = .002). PCOS-DM1 showed no phenotypic differences with age-matched and BMI-matched PCOS without diabetes. The hormonal pattern was similar except that higher levels of -4 androstenedione were found in PCOS-DM1 (12.89 ± 3.49 vs 2.79 ± 1.75 nmol/L; P = .010). Conclusions: The women with PCOS-DM1 do not exhibit particular phenotypic characteristics compared with nondiabetic women with PCOS. However, this pathological disorder must not be underestimated because it could be an additional cardiovascular risk factor in women with DM1. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye by porous zinc oxide nanofibers prepared via electrospinning: When defects become merits
Zinc oxide nanofibers consisting of interconnected polycrystalline nanoplatelets were produced via electrospinning followed by calcination and cooling at fast rates in order to obtain defect-rich hollow nanostructures. The produced nanofibers were evaluated as a photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue under 350 nm UV irradiation obtaining a fast reaction kinetics (rate constants: 2.86⋅10–2 min−1 and 6.06⋅10–2 min−1, by the use of 0.1 mg mL−1 and for 1.0 mg mL−1 photocatalyst in 15 μM aqueous solution, respectively). The thorough nanomaterial characterization and the comparison with ZnO photocatalysts with different morphology, particle size, crystallinity and defect density and location allowed identifying the influential factors. Defects located at the nanoplatelet connection interface (mainly oxygen- and zinc-vacancies) play a key role, in line with the recently assessed crucial importance of the grain boundaries in the photocatalyst design. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
