    Electronic characterization of swcnt/block copolymer-based nanofiber for biosensor applications, 2016

    The aim of this research is to fabricate an electrically conducting, smooth, continuous and sensitive nanofiber using tri-block copolymer PS-b-PDMS-b-PS and SWCNTs by electrospinning. The electronic nanofibers may be utilized for effective biosensing applications. The SWCNTs have been of great interest to researchers because of their exceptional electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. The nanoscale diameter, high aspect ratio, and low density make them an ideal reinforcing candidate for novel nanocomposite material. Electrically conducting fibers are prepared by electrospinning a solution of PS, PS-b- PDMS-b-PS and functionalized SWCNTs using solvent DMF. The fibers formed have an average diameter and height of 5 and 4 ?m respectively. These fibers are characterized by SEM, AFM, and optical microscopy. The electrical characterization of a single fiber shows an almost linear graph of current vs. voltage using the Kelvin Sensing method. This linear graph exemplifies the conducting nature of the fiber. Future work includes preparing nanofibers decorated with functional groups and binding with specific type of enzyme or protein to study their I-V behavior. This approach or method can be utilized for bio-sensing activities, especially for the detection of various antibodies and protein molecules

    Amrit Singh et <i>The Birmingham Quean</i> : fictions, faux et contrefaçons dans une contre-culture vernaculaire

    A thesis in creative writing and an experiment in literary theory, The Birmingham Quean comprises three intertwined strands of literary composition. The first is a mock-heroic poem reminiscent of Pope’s The Rape of the Lock, though composed using the stanza of Byron’s Don Juan to chronicle a day in the life of a forged pound coin. The Queen’s wonkily mis-struck head tells the tale of a darts match between a drag queen and a gangster in a pub in Birmingham, the English city whose name is synonymous with counterfeiting. The second strand is a philological commentary of the poem by an Oxbridge scholar, supposedly written in the 1950s, who reads it as a dystopian satire in the tradition of Huxley and Orwell. He views the poem as a work of reactionary traditionalism and his commentary is driven by a sense that both the coinage of civilisation and the English language have been irreversibly debased by post-war American capitalism and its deracinated, treacherously ambiguous culture. The final compositional strand is a parallel narrative charting Ph.D student ‘Sam Trainor’ and his struggles to track down the true author of this fake material, ‘Amrit Singh’, in contemporary Birmingham. We learn that the original work has been destroyed by fire, and what we read is Sam’s meticulous reconstruction of the literary hoax, along with his endeavours to decipher the intricate theory of fiction it propounds. ‘Amrit’ had argued, in the wake of Bakhtin, that a sophisticated contrapuntal form of fiction – as intracultural translation – was the only linguistic mode that could permit people to be genuinely psychologically plural, achieving consensus without compromise, and a radical shift towards a dynamic social epistemology. Sam’s engagement with this polyphonic theory and practice demonstrates how ‘Creative Writing’, as a new university subject, is itself a vivid counter-cultural performance, encroaching upon and reinventing the research-fields of the social sciences.Thèse expérimentale en « Creative Writing », The Birmingham Quean comprend trois fils de composition. D’abord un poème héroï-comique qui rappelle The Rape of the Lock de Pope, mais composé en utilisant la strophe de Don Juan de Byron, raconte une journée dans la vie d’une pièce de fausse monnaie. La face faussée de la reine sur la pièce mal frappée assiste à une partie de fléchettes entre une drag-queen et un gangster dans un pub à Birmingham, ville synonyme de la contrefaçon. Le deuxième fil consiste en une explication philologique du poème, prétendument écrit pendant les années 50 par un universitaire ringard qui l’interprète comme dystopie dans la tradition de Huxley et Orwell. Le dernier fil de la composition est un récit parallèle qui suit ‘Sam Trainor’, un doctorant, dans ses efforts pour retrouver le vrai auteur de cette contrefaçon littéraire dans le Birmingham contemporain : un certain ‘Amrit Singh’. Nous apprenons que l’ouvrage d’origine fut consumé par le feu, et que ce que nous lisons est la reconstruction méticuleuse par le doctorant de ce canular littéraire. Il tente, par ailleurs, de déchiffrer la complexe théorie de la fiction proposé par le texte. ‘Amrit’ avait suivi Bakhtin en suggérant que le contrepoint sophistiqué d’une fiction conçue comme traduction intraculturelle constituait le seul mode linguistique capable d’instaurer une véritable pluralité psychologique dans l’esprit humain, permettant ainsi le consensus sans compromis, et un virage radical vers une épistémologie sociale dynamique. La façon dont Sam aborde cette théorie et cette pratique polyphoniques met en scène le potentiel problématique (et la problématique du potentiel) de la « Creative Writing », en tant que matière universitaire naissante.     Leading Edge Erosion. Effect of droplet impact frequencies and dry intervals on incubation times of polyurethane coatings

    Rain erosion of leading edges in wind turbines caused by high-velocity droplet impacts is one of the current problems in wind energy that affects their energy production and maintenance costs. The most widespread solution for this problem is the application of viscoelastic coatings (generally, polyurethane) along the leading edge of the wind blade, the area that first meets the raindrop. The focus of the present study is to assess experimentally the effect of the frequency of droplet impacts and the performance of dry intervals (this is, intervals of time at which the test stops) on the incubation times of industrial viscoelastic polyurethane PU coatings. The coated samples were tested in a Pulsating Jet Erosion Tester (PJET) facility. The incubation times, defined as the period of time until damage is observed in the material, were measured in number of impacts and in global testing time (time that the test was kept running) until damage. The two effects that are aimed to investigate, the droplet impact frequency and the dry intervals, represent different relaxation times that the coating may undergo under real-life rainfall conditions: time intervals between individual raindrops (between raindrops) and between rain events (between rainfalls). Higher relaxation times are expected to have a beneficial effect on the rain erosion performance, as the viscoelastic coating would have time to recover itself to the original stress and strain state. The effects of test conditions that may influence the PJET, such as the water cushion effect, temperature and humidity were considered and evaluated. It was found that droplet impact frequency has an effect on the number of impacts until incubation: the lower the impact frequency, the lower the number of impacts until incubation. This effect has been linked to the longer and more energetic droplets produced by the PJET for these low frequencies and is not related to the viscoelastic behaviour of the coating. The existence of dry intervals when testing significantly increased the incubation times of PU coatings. This increase was larger when the dry intervals had a longer duration and when they were performed earlier during the tests. The effects of dry intervals in incubation times have been linked to the viscoelastic behaviour of the polyurethane coating. These results are expected to shed light on the effects of testing variables (impact frequency and dry intervals) that have historically been ignored in rain erosion tests and will help the design of new test parameters for erosion testing. The conclusions of the work will help to understand the importance of relaxation times and viscoelasticity in the incubation time of PU coatings and reveal that these effects will help to refine models that aim to predict the lifetime of polyurethane coatings in wind blade turbines based on real-life rainfall data. While investigating the influence of impact frequency, effects that may affect the PJET results were investigated. The effect of the water cushion was evaluated. This phenomenon consists of a water film that remains on the coating and that affects the posterior droplet impact. Water cushion effects were found to slightly increase incubation times for the highest impact frequencies. Their effects were counteracted with an air supplier aimed at the tested sample which removed the water cushion. Humidity and temperature were found to have an effect on the incubation times: in general, the higher the temperature and the relative humidity, the shorter the incubation times. The incubation times of saturated samples which went through humidity treatments were tested: their incubation times were lower than for those samples which did not undergo that treatment. DMA analysis was performed on PU samples, but the change in mechanical properties of the coating could not be directly linked to the drop in incubation times. It is suspected that plasticization is affecting the mechanical properties of the coating. The change in the environmental conditions may also be affecting the adhesion between the coating and substrate, resulting in lower incubation times.Aerospace Engineerin

    Green energy is becoming more important over the years in order to reduce CO₂ emission. One way to obtain green energy is transferring wind energy to electricity with wind turbines. The operation life of wind turbines are commonly between 20 and 25 years, but this is reduced by hail erosion. Experimental test have been performed to understand the effect of gelcoat thickness. Glass fibre composite plates with three gelcoat thicknesses (0.15 mm, 0.35 mm and 0.65 mm) are impacted with a simulated hail ice having a diameter of 20 mm and shot with a velocity of 120 m/s. Extra samples of the 0.15 mm coated samples were made to see damage at lower velocities (100 m/s and 90 m/s). The samples impacted at a velocity of 120 m/s showed that the 0.15 mm coated samples have the least amount of gelcoat damage. reducing the velocity for the 0.15 mm coated samples changed the main governing damage mode from gelcoat damage to matrix cracking in the composite.Aerospace Engineerin

    A Common Pain in Pregnancy with an Uncommon Cause

Vinod is a medical student at UMass Medical School.Case Diagnosis: We present a case of a patient with hip pain during pregnancy determined to be pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS). Case Description: A 41-year-old woman presented with 9-months of persistent atraumatic left hip pain localized to the groin that had started in her second trimester of pregnancy. Five months after delivery at presentation to clinic, her symptoms had progressively worsened to require a cane for ambulation. On exam, hip range of motion was limited: flexion to 90o, external rotation to 20o, and internal rotation to 10o. She had groin pain with internal and external rotation. She was neurovascularly intact without lymphadenopathy. Radiographs showed significant erosion of the left femoral head and acetabulum with mild protrusio. "Apple core" erosions were visualized at the femoral neck. MRI showed extensive bone edema on both sides of the joint, with erosion of the femoral head and acetabulum. There was joint effusion, synovial hypertrophy, and excessive synovial tissue. Differential diagnoses included PVNS, avascular necrosis, rapidly progressive osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, septic arthritis, insufficiency fractures, synovial chondromatosis, and transient osteoporosis of the hip. A needle biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of PVNS. She was treated with synovectomy and total hip arthroplasty, and has remained pain free and without evidence of disease for the last 5 years. Discussions: PVNS is a disorder characterized by synovial proliferation. There are only two previous case reports of patients who were diagnosed with PVNS during pregnancy, both of whom had monoarticular involvement of the knee. Conclusions: Synovectomy is the mainstay of surgical treatment of PVNS. Although, in patients with extensive articular involvement, synovectomy and arthroplasty may be required. The current understanding is that cytokines have a trophic influence leading to growth of the tumor. Further studies are needed to establish a definitive connection between PVNS and pregnancy

    Resonant surface scattering and dislocation flutter explain Kapitza resistance at a solid/solid 4He interface

    No commentInternational audience© 2019 Author(s).In this report we investigate the Kapitza resistance RK at an interface between a classical solid and a 4He quantum crystal, as a function of temperature. We provide a premise for RK based on a combination of two separate mechanisms which occur simultaneously. Owing to the fact that the phonon wavelengths in solid 4He and in the superfluid are of the same order of magnitude, we infer that one mechanism is due to resonant scattering of phonons by nanoscale surface roughness as predicted by Adamenko and Fuks1 for solid/superfluid interfaces. The other mechanism involves the interaction of thermal phonons with mobile vibrating dislocations within solid 4He. The present analysis demonstrates the plausibility of these two mechanisms in solving the long outstanding problem of the Kapitza resistance anomaly of solid 4He in contact with copper for temperatures ranging from 0.4 to 2 K
