Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. По-перше, розуміння реалій сприятиме кращому розумінню різними народами один одного; по-друге, визначення оптимальних засобів перекладу реалій є певним внеском до загальної теорії перекладу. Запропоновано різнотипні класифікації реалій, досліджено труднощі, пов’язані з адекватним перенесенням у перекладний текст всього масиву культурної інформації, закодованої в реаліях, що містяться в першотворі. Ґрунтуючись на аналізі численних перекладів літературних творів, українські дослідники (Р. Зорівчак, В. Коптілов, О. Кундзіч, О. Чередниченко та ін.) показують шляхи подолання мовних перешкод, зумовлених розбіжностями культур. Але, наскільки нам відомо, проблема перекладу українських реалій у творах Т. Г. Шевченка ще не є вичерпно висвітленою. Метою цієї статті є аналіз особливостей використання реалій у творі Т. Г. Шевченка «Катерина» та їх перекладу англійською мовою. Нами подано ідеографічну класифікацію лексичних одиниць – українських реалій у художній літературі та проаналізовано такі засоби їх перекладу, як калька, реномінація, транскрипція з поясненням, введення неологізму, принцип родо-видової заміни, що дає змогу передати (приблизно, наближено) зміст реалій більш широким, загальним значенням, тобто прийом генералізації. Результати нашого аналізу дають змогу скласти ідеографічну класифікацію українських реалій, які вживаються в художній літературі, а також підсумкувати поширеність засобів їх перекладу. Перспективи подальшого дослідження ми бачимо в аналізі певних перекладацьких невдач при перекладі реалій та запропонувати оптимальні варіанти їх перекладу.The article is written in line with current research, since the problem of studying Ukrainian realities is of unquestionable interest for several reasons. First, understanding the realities will promote bettermutual understanding of different peoples; and secondly, the definition of optimal means of translating the realities is a definite contribution to the general theory of translation. Different types of real-world classifications are proposed, the difficulties associated with the adequate transfer into the translated text of an entire array of cultural information encoded in the realities contained in the origina text are investigated. Basing on the analysis of numerous translations of literary works, Ukrainian researchers (R. Zorivchak, V. Koptilov, O. Kundzich, O. Cherednichenko, etc.) show ways to overcome linguistic obstacles caused by cultural differences. But, as far as we know, the problem of the translation of Ukrainian realities in the works of T. Shevchenko is not yet exhaustively highlighted. The purpose of this article is to analyze the peculiarities of the use of realities in the work of Taras Shevchenko "Katerina" and their translation into English. We have given an ideographic classification of lexical units - Ukrainian realities in fiction and analyzed such means of their translation as calque, renomination, transcription with explanation, the introduction of neologism, the principle of generic-species replacement, which allows conveying (approximately) the content of the realities by a broader, general meaning, that is, the reception of generalization. The results of our analysis allow us to make an ideographic classification of Ukrainian realities that are used in fiction, as well as to summarize the prevalence of their means of translation. Prospects for further research are seen in the analysis of certain translation failures in the translation of realities and to offer the best options for their translation.Статья написана в русле актуальных исследований, поскольку проблема изучения украинских реалий представляет несомненный интерес по нескольким причинам. Во-первых, понимание реалий способствует лучшему пониманию различными народами друг друга; во-вторых, определение оптимальных средств перевода реалий является определенным вкладом в общую теорию перевода. Предложены разнотипные классификации реалий, исследованы проблемы, связанные с адекватным переносом в переводной текст всего массива культурной информации, закодированной в реалиях, содержащейся в подлиннике. Основываясь на анализе многочисленных переводов литературных произведений, украинские исследователи (Р. Зоривчак, В. Коптилов, О.Кундзич, А. Чередниченко и др.) показывают пути преодоления языковых препятствий, обусловленных различиями культур. Но, насколько нам известно, проблема перевода украинских реалий в произведениях Т. Г. Шевченко еще не исчерпывающе исследована. Целью этой статьи является анализ особенностей использования реалий в произведении Т. Г. Шевченко «Катерина» и их перевода на английский язык. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
