    Post-war British working-class fiction with special reference to the novels of John Braine, Alan Sillitoe, Stan Barstow, David Storey and Barry Hines

    This study is about British working-class fiction in the post-war period. It covers various authors such as Robert Tressell, George Orwell, Walter Greenwood, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and DH Lawrence from the early twentieth century; writers traditionally classified as 'Angry Young Men' like John Osborne, Arnold Wesker, Shelagh Delaney, John Wain and Kingsley Amis; and working-class novelists like John Braine, Stan Barstow, David Storey, Alan Sillitoe and Barry Hines from the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the main issues dealt with in the course of this study are language, form, community, self/identity/autobiography, sexuality and relationship with bourgeois art. The major argument centres on two questions: representation of working-class life, and the relationship between working-class literary tradition and dominant ideologies. We will be arguing that while working-class fiction succeeded in challenging and rupturing bourgeois literary tradition, on the level of language and linguistic medium of expression for example, it utterly failed to break away from dominant, bourgeois modes of literary production in relation to form, for instance. Our argument is situated within Marxist approaches to literature, a political and aesthetic position from which we attempt an analysis and an evaluation of this working-class literary tradition. These critical approaches provide us also with the theoretical tool to define the political perspective of this tradition, and to judge whether it was confined to a descriptive mode of representation or located in a radical, political outlook

    Eclectic British author Alan Moore (b. 1953) is one of the most acclaimed and controversial comics writers to emerge since the late 1970s. He has produced a large number of well-regarded comic books and graphic novels while also making occasional forays into music, poetry, performance, and prose. In Alan Moore: Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel , Annalisa Di Liddo argues that Moore employs the comics form to dissect the literary canon, the tradition of comics, contemporary society, and our understanding of history. The book considers Moore's narrative strategies and pinpoints the main thematic threads in his works: the subversion of genre and pulp fiction, the interrogation of superhero tropes, the manipulation of space and time, the uses of magic and mythology, the instability of gender and ethnic identity, and the accumulation of imagery to create satire that comments on politics and art history. Examining Moore's use of comics to scrutinize contemporary culture, Di Liddo analyzes his best-known works-- Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, From Hell, Promethea , and Lost Girls .     Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em História, Florianópolis, 2013.Esta dissertação objetivou investigar o conceito de pan-americanismo no Brasil, suas repercussões, ressignificações e práticas políticas a ele associados durante o período que culminou com o envolvimento do país na Segunda Guerra Mundial, enfatizando as aparentes contradições entre uma ideia de pan-americanismo e o discurso de sustentação do Estado Novo. Como história de um conceito político, apoiada nas considerações de Reinhart Kosselleck e Quentin Skinner, a busca pelos antecedentes do pan-americanismo no Brasil se fez necessária, de modo a elucidar as maneiras com que o conceito repercutiu no país desde suas origens nos Estados Unidos, e os desdobramentos posteriores das Conferências Pan-Americanas e das atividades da União Pan-Americana. Tal busca serviu para elucidar os elementos de um "pan-americanismo brasileiro", ou seja, de um conceito externo que foi apropriado em um diferente contexto com diferentes fins políticos durante as três primeiras décadas do século XX. Isso faz a ligação entre a "ideia pan-americana" e a política externa brasileira do período Vargas e, mais especificamente, do Estado Novo, quando o Brasil foi para a guerra. Foi visto, assim, que o Estado Novo utilizou o pan-americanismo como instrumento de aproximação aos Estados Unidos, com objetivos de premência sobre a América do Sul durante um período de crise mundial, e ao mesmo tempo viu-se obrigado a reajustar o discurso da ?ideia pan-americana? aos princípios antiliberais que sustentavam o regime, sofrendo as consequências políticas desta tentativa de ajuste. Abstract : This dissertation aimed to investigate the concept of pan Americanism in Brazil, its repercussions, meanings and political uses associated to it during the period that culminated with the involvement in the Second World War, emphasizing the apparent contradictions related to a pan American idea and the ideas that sustained the Brazilian Estado Novo regime. As a history of a political concept, supported by the considerations of Reinhart Koselleck and Quentin Skinner, the search for the previous history of pan Americanism in Brazil was necessary. It elucidated the ways which the concept reverberated in Brazil since its origins in the United States, and its later results at the Pan American Conferences and the activities of the Pan American Union. This search helped in elucidating the elements of a "Brazilian pan Americanism", i. e., a foreign concept which was reframed to a different context with different political aims during the first three decades of the 20th century. From this on, it was possible to establish a connection between the "pan American idea" and the Vargas regime foreign policy, mainly, the Estado Novo, when Brazil went to war. It was found that the Estado Novo used pan Americanism as an instrument for approach towards United States, aiming a South American prevalence during the period of world crisis, and, at the same time, was obliged to adjust the pan American discourse to the anti-liberal principles that sustained the regime

    An Interview with Alan Duff

    Alan Duff's novel Once Were Warriors is the first work of fiction to be published in the Talanoa: Contemporary Pacific Literature series of the University of Hawai'i Press. One reason for choosing this novel was that it had recently been published in AotearoalNew Zealand (I990) and was causing considerable controversy. All of a sudden, this relatively unknown Maori was making headlines in the print media, being interviewed over and over again on television, and making a lot of people angry. His novel had shot to the top of the bestsellers' list soon after its release, and booksellers were besieged with requests to buy it-a novel that supposedly puts the boot in the face of the Maori. Once Were Warriors is now a successful, award-winning feature film. Alan Duff, who has since published another novel titled One Night Out Stealing (I992), a nonfiction book titled Maori: The Crisis and the Challenge (I993), anda radio series, State Ward (I994), is now famous, if not a household name in AotearoalNew Zealand. By his account, more novels, and possibly films, are already being written or planned. Refusing to be silenced by his critics, this author will probably continue to be in the news for many years to come. The mention of Duff's name is enough to set many people off, Maori and non-Maori alike. In a recent issue of this journal, Christina Thompson wrote a lengthy article that used as a hook the selection by theUniversity of Hawai'i Press of Alan Duff as a "representative Maori writer." Labeling the choice "radical," she teased out the cultural and political issues that surround his book-which is "problematic from almost any perspective" (THE CONTEMPORARY PACIFIC 6:397-4I3). The interview that follows allows the author to talk about his work from his own perspective, and to continue the debate that still rages around it. Soon after his film was released, Duff passed through Hawai'i on his way to Budapest to promote it. The University of Hawai'i Press took the opportunity to ask him to talk about his work during the launching of the Talanoa series, and Vilsoni Hereniko interviewed him in his office on I6 June I994.     The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function

    This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author
