A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.

PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social, economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding, and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons; none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained excluded from significant political office until after the fall of the Medici regime in 1494

GP-m: Mobile middleware infrastructure for Ambient Assisted Living

    No full text
The problem of providing assistive services to elderly in smart cities is becoming important due to the aging of population in the developed countries. The possibility of using personal devices like smartphones to be assisted also outside the house is a key factor to guarantee the independency of elderly users still remaining connected to his caregivers network. We identified in the development of a suitable mobile middleware one of the main solution to the barrier in the deployment of distributed AAL services. In this scenario, we show the effectiveness of the mobile middleware solution proposed, called GiraffPlus-mobile (GP-m), in terms of integration with the existing pervasive environment, performances and energy saving

The self motor evaluation/assessment in professional training of learning support teachers

One of the most significant experiences of SISS on the motor –training plan, which allowed in some cases the implementation of activity of research-action, was the motor- sports laboratory. The activity of laboratory in the motor- sports field and the motor subjects, along with specific training, represents in the SSIS (Specialization School Teaching Secondary) area an innovative element. This also gave a strong contribute to the definition of a new professional profile of the teacher that has in it those transversal skills needed to promote a new teaching, finding the necessary balances between the cognitive moment and the applicative and operative one

Optimization-Based Robust Localization of JADE Agents in Indoor Environments

    No full text
This paper describes and evaluates a localization algorithm that was originally designed to overcome known issues of classic geometric localization algorithms, and that is now implemented in the localization add-on module of JADE. The algorithm is designed to support self-localization of agents running on smart devices in known indoor environments, and its current implementation acquires needed ranging information from ordinary WiFi infrastructures, with no need of dedicated infrastructures. First, the agent estimates the distances of the smart device where it is running from WiFi access points by using received signal strength during ordinary network discovery. Then, the agent uses computed distance estimates to generate estimates of its position by solving an appropriate optimization problem using particle swarm optimization. The robustness of the algorithm is discussed in the last part of the paper by comparing the performance of the algorithm against the performance of a classic algorithm in a representative scenario. Presented experimental results emphasize that the described algorithm is more robust than the classic alternative because it does not suffer from well-known numerical instability problems of geometric localization algorithms

Computing hierarchical transition graphs of asynchronous genetic regulatory networks

    No full text
In the field of theoretical biology the study of the dynamics of the so-called gene regulatory networks is useful to follow the relationship between the expression of a gene and its dynamic regulatory effect on the cell fate. To date, most of the models developed for this purpose, applies the synchronous update schedule while reality is far from being so. On the other hand, the more realistic asynchronous update requires to compute all possible updates at each single instant, thus bearing a much greater computational load. In the present work, we describe a novel method that addresses the problem of efficiently exploring the dynamics of a gene regulatory network with the asynchronous update
