Preface
Biodiversity is an important factor in maintaining
existing karst landscapes and nowadays provides
the important indicator of degraded karst
ecosystems.
The Biodiversity and conservation of karst
ecosytems is a synthesis of knowledge about
geological and geomorphological and biological
aspects, which clarifies the required conditions
for maintaining biodiversity on the karst and Karst
edge, a broad region located along the border of
Italy and Slovenia.
In this book we provide brief scientific summaries
of the research work conducted in BioDiNet project
– a network for biodiversity and cultural landscape
conservation. Funding was provided by the
European program of cross-border collaboration
(Slovenia-Italy 2007-2013).
Four major areas were identified as key to the
management of this landscape and require further
investigation.
ΔΔResearch related to genetic variation, species
and ecosystems needs to be integrated
and strengthened in order to provide better
conservation management of endemic
species, ecotypes and habitats.
ΔΔThere is a need to nominate and research bioindicator
species involved in habitat maintenance
to serve as the basis of landscape
scale monitoring programs.
ΔΔA more directed effort is required to estimate
the impact of different pollutants upon cave
ecosystems.
ΔΔDesign and implementation of an effective
conservation monitoring system based on
standardize surveys to aid with the prediction
of future landscape changes and biodiversity
patterns.
The book provides an annex named Guidelines for
the biodiversity conservation of karst ecosystems.
These guidelines are designed for stakeholders
and local public administration and are written in
Slovenian and Italian.
We express our sincere gratitude to the students
and volunteers who have helped researchers during
numerous field trips and with laboratory analyses.
We acknowledge and praise the dedication and
expertise of our co-authors, without their input and
insights this book would not have been possibl
Public Sculptures of Petar Pallavicini in Dubrovnik
Born in Korčula, Petar Pallavicini (1887-1958) spent most of his life in Belgrade, where, attracted by the professional prospects of the then capital, he decided to settle in 1921 after graduating from the Art Academy in Prague. It was in Belgrade that he produced a series of decorative sculptures and works in the style he himself characterised as “spiritualised cubism”. In Dubrovnik, where he enjoyed most of his summers, Pallavicini was commissioned to execute the monument to Baltazar Bogišić, erected in Cavtat in 1913, where it still stands. Less known, however, is Pallavicini’s decorative work in Dubrovnik. The building of the National Bank was constructed in 1935/36 in one of the main thoroughfares of Dubrovnik (today Ulica hrvatskih branitelja). Pallavicini’s four reliefs, allegories of the traditional Dubrovnik crafts, adorn the pointed lunettes. The figures depicted in the relief panels are static, contemplative and lightly draped, the latter being his frequent expression. Morphological characteristics of the works and an article published in the paper “Novo doba” point to Petar Pallavicini as the author of this public relief in Dubrovnik. A reason more why these sculptures deserve our attention is the fact that in this period the sculpture of Dubrovnik was very modest.
Between 1947 and 1949 Pallavicini was commissioned to decorate a headstone at Boninovo—Dubrovnik cemetry. He is the author of a bronze relief on the family grave of his friend, painter Niko Miljan. The relief with a motif of the Virgin with the Child reflects intimism, its religious theme being rare in the post-war sculpture dominated by socialist realism

Impact of Multiple Curve Dynamics in Credit Valuation Adjustments
We present a detailed analysis of interest rate derivatives valuation under
credit risk and collateral modeling. We show how the credit and collateral extended
valuation framework in Pallavicini et al (2011) can be helpful in defining the key
market rates underlying the multiple interest rate curves that characterize current
interest rate markets. We introduce the collateralized valuation measures and formulate
a consistent realistic dynamics for the rates emerging from our analysis. We
point out limitations of multiple curve models with deterministic basis considering
valuation of particularly sensitive products such as basis swaps

Johann Markgraf Pallavicini
Außenministerium in Wien.
This dissertation is concerned with the diplomatic career of margrave Johann Pallavicini lasting from December 1874 till November 1918 completed in the diplomatic service of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The high point of his diplomatic career was without a doubt the appointment of margrave Pallavicini to the post of k.u.k. ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, a post he held from 1906 to 1918. Regarding the choice of margrave Pallavicini to be the diplomatic representative of the Austro- Hungarian monarchy, this study attempts to answer the question what kind of expertise, experience and knowledge regarding the foreign political or rather diplomatic key characteristics of the Ottoman foreign and interior policy qualified Pallavicini for this appointment.
During his long diplomatic career, that took him to be posted in Berlin, Paris, London, Belgrade, St. Petersburg and Bukarest, margrave Pallavicini was confronted in different manner, directly as well as indirectly with developments, crises and their consequences surrounding the oriental question and acquired in depth knowledge of the topic, and the information thus gained was put to good use in decision making processes when applicable. Hence the focus of this analysis in on his method of acquiring knowledge and information on the politics of the european great powers regarding their exertion of influence on the Ottoman Empire as well as transfer of information due to his diplomatic activity and his access to facts and his background knowledge as well as personal contacts with regards to the respective k.u.k. diplomatic representative and the k.u.k. Ministry of foreign affairs in Vienna.
During his career Pallavicini demonstrated more than once his great diplomatic skill through personal initiative, efficient effort and social commitment. Be it by contact with the rulers of the respective country, be it with high ranking foreign affairs or home affairs representatives of the respective political elite in Serbia, Russia, Romania or the Ottoman Empire. Margrave Pallavicini not only always succeeded during his career in carrying out his official duties to the utmost satisfaction of his direct superiors, the different ministers of foreign affairs but also obtained personal recognition from Emperor Franz Joseph I. With this in mind, this study offers a detailed insights into the conflictual issue of the reorganization of the Balkans keeping in mind the nationalistic aspirations of the Balkan States and an Ottoman Empire made stagnant by inner turmoil and outside threats. Furthermore this study offers an inside view of mechanisms of the Austro-Hungarian diplomacy from the standpoint of a diplomat, who through his effort, his experience and his knowledge was able to make a modest contribution to the orientation of Austro-Hungarian foreign policy within the scope of the oriental issue
