Older persons, political participation, and the Decade of Healthy Ageing: an international legal analysis*
The increase in global population ageing, coupled with advancements in the study of active ageing, underscores the need for deeper discussions centred on older adults. Among various fundamental subjects regarding this population, participation in social and political life stands out, with the act of voting in elections serving as a significant expression of such engagement. This article seeks to explore some key sources of International Law that focus on older people, emphasizing the element of political participation. This study was developed from a qualitative, exploratory research, through a bibliographic and documental review, by gathering pertinent legislation. Initially, it examines international legal frameworks related to the subject, progressing to an analysis of the Decade of Healthy Ageing, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The conclusion drawn from this study is that the lack of a global treaty addressing the rights of older adults reflects the ongoing invisibility experienced by this population. Therefore, it is essential to foster discussions about older people´s political participation and to implement measures that ensure they are not only beneficiaries of services but also agents of change. The increase in global population ageing, coupled with advancements in the study of active ageing, underscores the need for deeper discussions centred on older adults. Information and imagination : the representation to Africa in Extraordinary voyages
The Extraordinary Voyages, evocative title given to the series of novels in which the author sets out to conquer the geographical space on a global scale, begin in 1863 with the publication of Cinq Weeks in balloon, novel in which the exploration of the African continent is the main theme. This first trip, which is described as the most curious and useful of imaginary journeys, summarizes the great discoveries of the most famous travelers. The immediate success of this first trip combining imagination and truth, puts in perspective a complete work of which part is rooted in the heart of the African continent. Africa, land to civilize and still primitive in many respects, appears as a vast laboratory where explorers and scientists of all kinds come to seek answers to the many questions raised by the march of progress. Then, between information and imagination, the Extraordinary Voyages testify to the desire to tell the experience of the famous explorers who roam Africa, and who furrow it in search of a knowledge that only the voyage can make emerge. The African continent is thus at the center of the Vernian work, and has multiple meanings that lie between imaginary and historical, geographical, scientific, but also cultural reality. Because, what the Voyages bring to the fore, are also the cultural shocks that occur during the great explorations of the interior, but above all, they raise a certain number of questions relating to the legacy that the writer whose predictions still make the news toda
Collegiate female athletes' reported experiences of recovering from eating disorders
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston UniversityPLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at [email protected]. Thank you.At present, there is little esearch on athletes' recovery from eating disorders. The research was designed to fill this void through three studies on recovery in athletes who experienced eating disorders.
Study #1 included 49 collegiate female athlete participants with current or former eating disorders. They completed on-line questionnaires to determine persons and factors that helped their attempts at recovery as well as to measure their use of coping mechanisms. Mothers and friends were most frequently cited as helpful as well as hurtful to recovery. Not wanting to lose the ability to compete in sport emerged as the most important factor in assisting recovery. Coping mechanisms were interpreted using Folkman and Lazarus's (1980) transactional model. Results revealed that greater recovery was related to more use of problem-focused coping and emotional-approach coping strategies as well as less use of avoidant-style coping.
Study #2 utilized in-depth interviews with 17 collegiate female athletes who had achieved at least three months of recovery from an eating disorder in attempt to better understand the recovery process in athletes. Results revealed a life-cycle of an eating disorder which had ultimately led the participants to recovery. The participants' reports indicated a variety of internal and external factors that helped and hindered the recovery process which were discussed and compared to the non-athlete literature.
Study #3 provided advice to coaches, parents, and athletes based on the experiences of 16 collegiate female athletes who had achieved at least a three month period of recovery from an eating disorder. Participants most frequently encouraged coaches to address eating disorder symptoms, provide support, and refer athletes to professional care. Parents were encouraged to provide support, recommend professional treatment, avoid critical comments or judgments, and become more educated about eating disorders. Participants most commonly recommended that athletes with eating disorders keep hope for recovery, determine underlying causes of the disorder, and seek professional treatment.
The results from all three studies provided implications for the sport community, which were discussed in detail. Overall, results indicated that the ability to participate in sport is a crucial factor in motivating athletes to recover from eating disorders.2999-01-0
VELHICE FEMININA E A PERCEPÇÃO DO EXERCÍCIO DO VOTO NO BRASIL
The unexpected appropriation of free spaces, such as the Carrefour parking lot in the Southern Region of Natal / RN, has been a way of indicating the population’s constant search for alternatives to public spaces, which are increasingly permeated by fear. Therefore, it is questioned how the supermarket constitutes an attraction for the accomplishment of different activities, by various social segments, in the context of the city. The motivations that involve the choice of theme concern the interest aroused by the results of previous research developed by the author and her colleague Jessyca Alencar, in which he was part of the study cut. It is also justified by the absence of academic papers on the subject, and by the contribution to new forms of apprehension of the nature and meanings of spaces, associated to the recognition of human participation in this construction. Then, the objective is to understand the processes of resignification of that area considering aspects of safety and vitality. To reach it, the precepts of several authors, such as Raquel Tardin, Eugênio Queiroga, Paulo César Gomes, Ana Fani Carlos, Frederico de Holanda and Jane Jacobs are used. They and the other names covered define terms such as free space, spheres of life, appropriation, identity, place, urbanity, diversity and vitality. The empirical data collected for the development of the evidence were collected through maps, questionnaires, open interviews and field observations, with the aid of photographic records, social networks and websites. The results then tend to prove the hypothesis and the fulfillment of the main purpose of the study, demonstrating that the physical aspects of the site are essential for the commitment of the public in focus. Associated with the fear of the surroundings (and of the parking lot itself), the signs of vitality remain, but suffer from novelties that impose limits and give rise to new questions.
