This dissertation makes an empirical analysis of news published in newspapers of February 1959, about the incident at the construction camp of Pacheco Fernandes Dantas Company. It aims at searching if this episode was journalistically investigated by the media of that time, through the comparison of the published content. This work proposes the discussion of the case as a paradigm or reference for other similar occurrences in which Journalism fails to fulfill its social role as a government investigator and questioner. Thus, this paper discusses the importance of journalism to elucidate events like this which have been forgotten by the official historiography, and mainly, on the social responsibility of the journalist, through its investigation and verification rigor as a mediator of reality and not a mere version copyist. It discusses the journalism as a fundamental activity for the construction of social memory and history. With no immediate reports of journalist work of the historian becomes more difficult. The daily record made by the journalist is linked to building social and historical memory that remains

Structure-function relationship in type II cytochrome c 3 from Desulfovibrio africanus: a novel function in a familiar heme core

NMR and visible spectroscopy were used to characterize the type II tetraheme cytochrome c 3 isolated from the periplasmic space of Desulfovibrio africanus, a sulfate-reducing bacterium. Although structurally similar to other cytochromes c 3, this protein displays distinct functional properties. Proton NMR signals from the four hemes were assigned to the structure in the ferri- and ferrocytochromes using two-dimensional NMR experiments. The thermodynamic parameters of the hemes and of an acid-base center in the type II cytochrome c 3 were determined using NMR and visible spectroscopies. The thermodynamic features indicate that electrostatic effects dominate all of the interactions between the centers and no positive cooperativity between hemes is observed. The redox-Bohr effect in this protein is associated with the acid-base equilibrium of a propionate of heme II instead of propionate 13 of heme I as is the case for all of the type I cytochromes c 3. These novel functional properties are analyzed together with the redox-linked structural differences reported in the literature and reveal a mechanistic basis for type II cytochromes c 3 having a physiological function that is different from that of type I cytochromes c 3

British Women Travellers And The Harems: Liberties, Enslavement and Domesticity

This thesis examines the complex perspective of a woman traveller. Wortley Montagu, Martineau, Burton and their contemporaries, represented the harem through various lenses. The Oriental harem has fascinated Western civilization since time immemorial. This sacred place, reserved for the women and children of the Muslim household, had long been a terra incognita to British outsiders, until the publication of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s (1689-1762) Turkish Embassy Letters (1763), which gave impetus to a whole tradition of travel writings, particularly harem accounts, penned by British women. The aristocratic Wortley Montagu recasts Turkish women from their previous Western image as over-sexed and soulless beings to idealized domestic goddesses, living in an ideal world, the harem. Harriet Martineau(1802-1876) , travelled to the Ottoman Empire more than a century after Wortley Montagu’s residency in Oriental lands. Martineau was a rare talent. She was an accomplished journalist and a pioneering figure in Western sociology. She spent her life validating a place for herself and her sex in a patriarchal and male-dominated society; she earned her own keeping, and lived independently. Martineau related her eastern experience in Eastern Life: Past and Present (1848), in which the Oriental harem figures very little. Martineau pitied the women she encountered in Egypt, and depicted them as slaves of a corrupt system, the harem and the practice of polygamy. My thesis ends with the travel writings of Lady Isabel Burton (1831-1896) whose view of the Oriental women she met in Syria is the most tempered. Her Inner Life of Syria, Palestine and the Holy Lands: from my Private Journal (1875) displays a tolerance of other cultures and a move toward moral and cultural relativisms. Each of the women considered in this thesis formed her own harem, projecting on to this distant Oriental structure her fears, hopes and desires. Wortley Montagu’s harem was a utopia for women only. The Victorian Martineau opined that the Oriental harem was a hell on earth. Lady Isabel Burton constructed a happy medium between the two. Although at times ambivalent towards the Syrian women she encountered, she partook in their customs and manners, particularly public bathing, smoking and other Eastern indulgences. Her attitude illustrates that the British home and the Oriental harem are not so dissimilar, bridging the gap between us and them

Factors associated with the humoral response after three doses of COVID-19 vaccination in kidney transplant recipients

[Introduction] Kidney transplant recipients showed a weak humoral response to the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine despite receiving three cumulative doses of the vaccine. New approaches are still needed to raise protective immunity conferred by the vaccine administration within this group of high-risk patients.[Methods] To analyze the humoral response and identify any predictive factors within these patients, we designed a prospective monocentric longitudinal study of Kidney transplant recipients (KTR) who received three doses of mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine. Specific antibody levels were measured by chemiluminescence. Parameters related to clinical status such as kidney function, immunosuppressive therapy, inflammatory status and thymic function were analyzed as potential predictors of the humoral response.[Results] Seventy-four KTR and sixteen healthy controls were included. One month after the administration of the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 64.8% of KTR showed a positive humoral response. As predictive factors of seroconversion and specific antibody titer, we found that immunosuppressive therapy, worse kidney function, higher inflammatory status and age were related to a lower response in KTR while immune cell counts, thymosin-a1 plasma concentration and thymic output were related to a higher humoral response. Furthermore, baseline thymosin-a1 concentration was independently associated with the seroconversion after three vaccine doses.[Discussion] In addition to the immunosuppression therapy, condition of kidney function and age before vaccination, specific immune factors could also be relevant in light of optimization of the COVID-19 vaccination protocol in KTR. Therefore, thymosin-a1, an immunomodulatory hormone, deserves further research as a potential adjuvant for the next vaccine boosters. This study was supported by a grant from the Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria (FIS/PI21/00357), which is co-founded by Fondos Europeos para el Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) “Una manera de hacer Europa”. Dissertação de Mestrado em Psicologia Clínica Sistémica e da Saúde apresentada à Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da EducaçãoIn recent years, Portugal has faced devastating rural fires, prompting a pressing need to understand their social impacts. This study examines the relationship between risk perception, previous experience with rural fires, family hardiness, and sense of community and its objective is to understand how perception and experience with rural fires impact families and communities. The sample consisted of 332 participants ages 19 to 75 years (M = 36.33, SD = 13.08). The findings reveal that direct, catastrophic experiences with rural fires significantly increased risk perception. While overall family hardiness and community sense did not strongly correlate with risk perception, specific dimension did. Families with greater sense of control perceived less risk perception, while those who view challenges as growth opportunities showed heightened perception to potential risks. Additionally, the emotional connection in a community proved to be significant for awareness of risks related to rural fires, as it increased it. Regarding previous experience, the study did not find it to significantly influence overall family hardiness, but it positively affected specific aspects of community sense, such as emotional connection and group membership. Family hardiness and community sense also didn’t show buffering effects on the relationship between previous experience and community sense, nor did they moderate it. These insights highlight the importance of community factors in shaping responses to rural fires and the need to foster family control and community bonds to enhance resilience. The study provides important insights for creating interventions to enhance community and family resilience in the face of increasing rural fire threats.
