A revised Dataset of Real Wages in Latin America, 1920-2011

    No full text
This long-term dataset makes three contributions to the statistics of the region. First, it offers yearly series of real wages, consistently defined over time and comparable across countries, informing about trajectories and turning points across distinct development and growth periods. Secondly, the addition of compatible series of income per worker makes it possible to calculate variables on interest such as a proxy for a wage share of income and the wage-to-income ratio. And, thirdly, by including series reflecting three skill levels, the data allows for the calculation of skill premiums, and in particular the skilled-to-unskilled wage ratio

González Álvarez, David and Alonso González, Pablo (2013): «The ‘Celtic-Barbarian Assemblage’: Archaeology and Cultural Memory in the Fiestas de Astures y Romanos, Astorga, Spain». Public Archaeology, 12(3): 155-180.The Fiestas de Astures y Romanos (The Festival of Astures and Romans) is a thriving historical re-enactment performed in the town of Astorga, in northwest Spain. The objective of our research has been to explore the complex interactions between politics, the public, and heritage management, and to evaluate their impact upon archaeology as a discipline. We draw on a participant ethnography carried out during the 2011 event. The concept of ‘Celtic-Barbarian Assemblage’ enables us to understand how different usages of the pre-Roman past condition identity politics and heritage policies at the local level. Finally, we refl ect upon our fi ndings and suggest potential lines of action to tackle what we perceive to be the increasing gap between public and academic archaeology in Spain, whose long-term consequences can be detrimental for the discipline as a whole.Peer reviewe

    Must be an American Citizen

Living in a limbo state is something many individuals have experienced throughout America’s history, and it is something author Guadalupe Astorga has lived through firsthand. Though she has worked to make Los Angeles her home since moving from Mexico as a young girl, Astorga struggles with the legal definition of “American,” which causes her to feel as though she is living a border existence with “little to no control over [her] future.” Through an exploration of collected memories, Astorga fights against the fear, impatience, and doubt over her “American” identity, but as she waits for an interview that will decide how her immigration story will end, hope begins to fade

The Dictator and the Parties A Study on Policy Co-operation in Mineral Economies

    No full text
This paper develops a game to study the possibility of co-operative behaviour in a situation where the political system is dominated by two strong, opportunistic parties competing in an economy highly dependent on the export of a commodity. Since a binding agreement as an external solution is unlikely to succeed due to the close association between the incumbent party and the government (the guardian), the paper explores the extent to which co-operation between political parties that alternate in office can rely on self-enforcing strategies to provide an internal solution. For appropriate values of the probability of re-election and the discount factor, it is possible to rely on reciprocity to sustain an early-stopping equilibrium. However, cooperation is undermined by low values of re-election probability out of current revenues and party myopia. In those circumstances, the self-policing solution might not be viable and an institutional response would be necessary. The game also sheds some light on the apparent paradox of situations in some mineral- rich democracies (such as the recent Venezuelan experience) where the enjoyment of considerable external revenues is followed by a period of economic stagnation, a deterioration of political stability, and the surge of a dictatorship threat.Political Economy, Non-cooperative games, Democracy, Mineral Economies, Venezuela
