L’involucro nell’edilizia sociale della seconda metà del Novecento: tecnologie e sistemi
ZONA MOBILE. Tecnologie per l’integrazione architettonica di elementi schermanti mobili
This research deals with the architectural integration of mobile external shielding devices with the building’s façade. In most cases these elements act as solar shading. For this reason, within the research, they are called by that name. The research mainly develops around the theme of environmental quality, strictly limited to the architectural integration of these mobile devices with the building’s façade. It concerns mainly the quality of open spaces but also of those internal. When we talk about environmental quality often it means an interest in microclimatic comfort. Recently the research tends to focus only on the energy aspects. These issues are left aside here, since the researches about energy-saving and microclimatic comfort sadly neglect some strategical aspects: in most cases the solar shading systems do not fall within an architectural design and also they may affect the appearance of places, from single side to the urban front, to the entire city.
This research deals with all the main aspects of this area: history of architecture, manufacturing of solar shading systems, legislation, bibliography, software, technological and environmental design.
The main goal of this research was to identify technological and architectural parameters for the choice of external dynamic shielding devices. These parameters must allow the integration of shielding devices with the building’s façade in connection with the culture and the traditions of the places. The ultimate goal of this research was to produce guidelines for architectural design and a user-friendly software. These instruments are addressed to the world of architectural design, manufacturing and sales of solar shading systems, but also to local authorities for the improvement of building regulations. Among the identified parameters the main are: color, type and dimension of the shading elements related to the buildings and their relationship with the context. On these basis, over one hundred case studies of contemporary international architecture have been analyzed. The data emerged from the analysis were developed in graphs and were compared across, producing scientific results under the form of stochastic analysis of the sample studied.
The research has produced a system of guidelines dealing with the use of different façade types and different solar shading systems with specific color combinations and a software to quickly view these possible configurations
COLOR AND CLADDING FOR A NEW RECLAMATION-ARCHITECTURE
The approach to the landscape’s project can be included in the concept of valorization and requalification of the natural and built environment. This can be through study, design and use of materials, processes and technical solutions related to the color and its application. In this context, closely linked to the landscape’s perception and its interaction with the user through the senses, the operations that can be planned for the development and qualification of environment and landscape of a particular area can take advantage of the knowledge of bright and colorful materials.
Inside the huge area of the design and landscape enhancement are taking special interest the valorization of the areas where built the reclamation-systems inside the Venetian plain and extending to the neighboring provinces of Trentino and Friuli.
In a recent research carried out at the University IUAV of Venice in cooperation with Reclamation Consortiums of these territories have emerged needs to valorization and requalification of the reclamation systems. Among them there are: hydraulic supports, pumping stations, water towers, etc.. built after World War II. The reclamation systems made in this age can be seen in the landscape plants as like as functional systems. They are without any design approach from the point of view of design and technology. Often these systems will degrade the quality of the landscape.
The Directors of the reclamation consortiums were asked to me to write the guidelines for improve the design of the reclamation architecture to valorize the surrounding landscape. This can be done with an innovative low environmental impact, where the priority is given to the appearance, visibility and perception of the artifacts and the environmental quality.
The paper will report the progress of this first research approach in which the theme of the color will be addressed with particular regard to the treatment of the surfaces with innovative coatings (paints, panels, smart materials).
Above all, it will be dealt with the issue of valorization of landscapes with bright and color technology by low environmental impact. This research will be done with the aim of achieving concepts: sustainability, reversibility, usability, security, visibility
COLOUR AND LIGHT IN THE REQUALIFICATION, REGENERATION, AND VALORISATION OF RESI-DENTIAL BUILDINGS
A PRIN research (Research Program of National Interest) which involved four Italian universities: Ferrara, Turin, Chieti-Pescara, Venice, has just been completed. The research theme concerned the “Requalification, regeneration and valorization of intensive social housing settlements built in the suburbs in the second half of the Twentieth Century”. Within the Venetian Research Unit, the three authors have dealt with the “Environmental quality as result of requalification, regeneration and valorization of the building envelope skin”, focusing their attention on how environmental regeneration is achieved through technological, chromatic and lighting interventions, aimed to improve the last physical frontier of the building. The case study used as a reference for the test and the validation of the obtained results is a medium-large scale intervention, located in the city of Verona, in Zancle street. The authors carried out on the intervention all the required simulations to verify as the only chromatic and lighting improvement of the last physical frontier of the buildings is capable of generating a significant environmental improvement that reverberates, as well as on the building itself, on the surrounding areas and on the entire neighborhood.
The issue involves not only Italy. A good number of European countries have a large architectural heritage that needs to be requalified, regenerated and valorized, i.e. brought to an overall condition of adjustment to the current standard of living. These buildings, some of them once the expression of the most advanced instances of design and construction, today represent the symbol of certain conditions of decay and inefficiency that characterize the contemporary city. To improve their environmental quality, the authors carried out a scientific research that has satisfactorily demonstrated that the most significant interventions from an environmental point of view, obtained by color and light use, give significant social consequences, taking place around the interface called: architectural envelope.
Here the architectural envelope is not conceived as a functional package, but as an external boundary, in which the technologies that make use of color and light are capable of ensuring the building quality and ameliorate the environment where it is placed, as well as to provide an adequate protection to the functional layers underneath. Today, this external boundary has considerably evolved: since the skin of buildings has become active, adapting to external environmental conditions, the relationship with the outside and the materials that underlie gave to this external boundary functions that are most similar to an interface than to a passive element which future is degradation and to be destroyed. Today, all the interventions relating to the architectural envelope can produce drastic effects on the improvement of the environmental quality of the entire building and its surroundings: better energy performances, better environmental and appearance performances, life extension and increased value of the asset. Building envelope requalification: Guidelines for recovering social housing
The demand for widespread quality is an issue that has become increasingly necessary as soon as building practices have radically changed the service behavior of building components realized with functional or quantitative priority goals. In a sense, "the intensive social housing settlements built in the second half of the Twentieth Century" have basically responded to that logic, putting into the background a number of requirements which, over time, have risen in the scale of priorities, some of them even becoming on emergency.
In order to understand the recent trends in redevelopment, regeneration and enhancement of residential settlements we necessarily had to resort to the identification of a significant sample of case studies carried out recently. The case studies have been identified in the Italian and European territory.
Collected, cataloged and discriminated these results, a set of information of great interest for the entire research has emerged
L’involucro rivestito. Riqualificazione, rigenerazione e valorizzazione degli involucri edilizi
Il nostro Paese, come buona parte del territorio Europeo, è dotato di un vastissimo patrimonio edilizio meritevole di essere riqualificato, rigenerato, valorizzato, insomma riportato ad una condizione complessiva di adeguamento agli standard di vita attuali. Emblematico in questo senso è il caso dell’edilizia residenziale ad alta intensità abitativa realizzata nelle periferie urbane nella seconda metà del Novecento. Questi edifici oggi rappresentano l’emblema di certe condizioni di degrado e inefficienza che contraddistinguono parte del costruito contemporaneo. Al fine di fornire un contributo al miglioramento della qualità ambientale gli autori hanno condotto una ricerca scientifica che si è occupata della riqualificazione, rigenerazione e valorizzazione di questi edifici dimostrando ampiamente che gli interventi più significativi si svolgono attorno a quell’interfaccia che viene chiamata involucro architettonico. Tale ricerca si è concentrata sull’involucro come limine esterno, capace di garantire qualità all’edificio e al luogo in cui è collocato, nonché fornire adeguata protezione agli strati funzionali sottostanti. Tutti gli interventi che riguardano l’involucro sono oggi in grado di produrre effetti drastici sul miglioramento della qualità ambientale dell’intero edificio e del suo intorno: aumento delle prestazioni energetiche, aumento delle prestazioni ambientali e di aspetto, estensione della vita utile nonché aumento del valore del bene. Di tutti questi argomenti si occupa il libro. Si sono definite e classificate le diverse strategie di intervento possibili per la riqualificazione, rigenerazione e valorizzazione dell’involucro architettonico dell’edilizia residenziale. Il libro contiene inoltre le specifiche relative ai sistemi di chiusura, di rivestimento e delle tecnologie contemporanee per la riqualificazione delle facciate degli edifici. Presenta infine un sistema di linee guida che identificano le strategie di intervento più idonee per l’ottenimento degli obiettivi prefissati
