Zapisi Vladimira Ardalića o narodnom životu i običajima u Bukovici iznimno su i višestruko fi lološko, etnološko, antropološko i teološko bogatstvo. Zapisi o pravoslavnom Božiću Vladimira Ardalića i drugi starinski i suvremeni zapisi svjedoče o dubokoj ukorijenjenosti pravoslavnih vjernika u kršćansku slavensku i europsku civilizaciju. Zapisi u monografiji „Bukovica, narodni život i običaji“ Vladimira Ardalića svjedoče trajne tradicijske vrednote. This paper (re)evaluates records of customs related to Orthodox Christmas in Bukovica, published by Vladimir Ardalić in 1902. These records describe Christmas Eve celebrations, (the Yule log harvesting, preparation of food for Christmas, the blessing of cattle Christmas Eve,, straw intake,) Chrismass morning, Christmas day, Newlyweds,; Little Christmas; use of candles, cthe Day of Cross, Epiphany, and beliefs related to the Christmas period. The rites and customs that took place from Christmas Eve to Epiphany were recorded followingthe church calendar, and in the order in which they took place. They were interpreted in the context of Orthodox Christmas traditions and rituals in other regions, which are found in the writings of Luka Oriovčanin Ilić, Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, Milovan Gavazzi, and contemporary records. The author includes Biblical context of these rituals, traditions and beliefs, and compares the Orthodox and Catholic traditions. The number of identical Orthodox and Catholic rites, customs and folk beliefs is large. Vladimir Ardalić’s records of folk life and customs in Bukovica are exceptional and manyfold philological, ethnological, anthropological and theological tresure.. Ardalić’s account of customs related to the Orthodox Christmas , and other ancient and contemporary customs provide testimony to the deep rootednesst of the Orthodox Christians in the region the Christian Slavic and European civilization. The entries in the monograph “Bukovica, folk life and customs” of Vladimir Ardalic also provide testimony to the permanent traditional values.

The attempt of spontaneous repair of rotator cuff tear: the role of periostin

    No full text
The development of a periostin-rich microenvironment in areas associated with insult, orchestrating pathways of repair and rebuilding, is documented. Literature lacks information regarding the presence of periostin in the context of rotator cuff tear (RCT). 55 consecutive patients with RCT were enrolled. Immunohistochemical periostin detection was performed on tissue samples excised from tear margins. Our study documented the presence of periostin in the margins of RCT. It is plausible that, when a tear occurs, multiple stimuli, both mechanical and inflammatory, lead to the development of a periostin-rich microenvironment as an attempt to tendon healing

Nuclear lamin A in rotator cuff tear margin tenocytes: an antiapoptotic and cell mechanostat factor

    No full text
Abstract Background The network of intermediate filament proteins underlying the inner nuclear membrane forms the nuclear lamin. A- and B-type lamins are the major components of the nuclear lamina. Lamins function in many nuclear activities. The role of lamin A and transcription factors (NF-kB) as anti-apoptotic is well documented. Recently, lamin A has also been considered as a mechanosensor protein that is able to maintain nuclear integrity from mechanical insults. We aimed to verify how lamin A expression varies in healthy cuff cells and in those with different-sized tears where various mechanical stresses are present. Methods Forty-three patients with rotator cuff tear (RCT) [23M–20F, mean age (SD): 63.5 (6.1)] were enrolled. Tissue samples excised from the most medial point of tear margins were analyzed for lamin A expression by immunohistochemistry. Controls were represented by samples obtained by normal supraspinatus tendons excised from patients submitted to reverse shoulder prosthesis implant [8M–7F, mean age (SD): 67.9 (7.1)]. The intensity of staining was graded, and an H-score was assigned. Statistical analysis was performed. Results Our study revealed a moderate intensity of lamin A in the healthy cuff tendons, a higher expression of this protein in the small tears, and a significant decrease of lamin A with increasing tear size (p < 0.0001). Conclusions Our study emphasizes the importance of early repair of small RCTs since nuclear stability is maintained, and the cellular function is protected by lamin A overexpression. High re-tear of massive cuff repair could be due to cellular apoptosis and nuclear modifications induced by lamin A lack. Level of evidence II

A novel combination of triple metachronous malignancies of the kidney, oropharynx and prostate. A case report

    No full text
Synchronous or metachronous malignancies are a rare event, with an incidence rate that increases with age. The present study reports the case of a 70-year-old Caucasian male who was referred to the outpatient office of the Urology Unit, Sapienza University of Rome (Latina, Italy) due to lower urinary tract symptoms. An abdominal ultrasound investigation was performed that demonstrated the presence of a right renal mass. The patient underwent right radical nephrectomy, which resulted in the definitive diagnosis of clear cell type renal cell carcinoma. The patient was eventually diagnosed with triple primary metachronous cancer consisting of renal clear cell carcinoma, prostate adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx (palatine tonsil). To the best of our knowledge, this combination of primary neoplasms has not previously been documented

Imaging, immunohistochemistry and ultrastructure of a primary vaginal leiomyosarcoma

Primary vaginal leiomyosarcomas (LMS) are rare, recurrent tumours with an unknown etiology; the prognosis is poor and there is no consensus guideline on their management (1-2). Surgical resection is generally the gold standard. Due to their rarity there are few studies in the literature including immunohistochemistry and/or ultrastructure (2-4). Herein a primary vaginal LMS is analyzed. Magnetic Resonance Imaging identified a nodular mass in the anterior vaginal wall of a 58-year-old previously hysterectomized woman; it infiltrated the urethra but not the rectovaginal septum. Iliac lymph nodes were negative and a total body CT excluded the presence of distant metastasis. An anterior pelvic exenteration was performed with continent urostomy and creation of a neovagina. The biopsy showed a vaginal LMS that was positive for vimentin, α-smooth muscle actin, caldesmon, desmin, p16 and p53. The sample was fixed and prepared for light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The ultrastructural features showed hypercellularity, moderate mitotic index, nuclear pleomorphism, indented nuclear membrane, prominent nucleoli, absence of intercellular junction complexes, and a dense stroma. No dark, intermediate nor light cells could be recognized as reported (3), may be due to a highly undifferentiated and malignant tumor. After 2 years of surveillance follow-up, the patient is fine and without recurrence. According to the literature, there is still no consensus on the fact that this tumor arises de novo or as a malignant change from a leiomyoma (5-6). The patient had uterine leiomyomas and the vaginal hysterectomy might have seeded atypical cells in the vagina. However, routine uterine histology showed no atypical cells. In conclusion, best outcomes occur when the tumour is small, localized, and can be removed surgically with wide, clear margins, as in this case. As there are different kinds of malignant mesenchymal tumors, biopsy followed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy still represents a good diagnostic choice. The question regarding the origin of vaginal LMS still remains open
