    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Infectious agents in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphomas: Pathogenic role and therapeutic perspectives

    Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma probably constitutes the best in vivo model showing how complex interplay between B lymphocytes and the surrounding microenvironment may lead to a neoplastic disorder. After the seminal discovery of the pathogenic association between Helicobacter pylori and gastric MALT lymphomas, evidence suggests the possible involvement of other infectious agents in the development of MALT lymphomas arising at different body sites. Although several other bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi, Campylobacter jejuni, and Chlamydia psittaci) and viruses (Hepatitis C virus) seem to play a role in lymphomas presenting at different locations, a possible common pathogenic mechanism is emerging. Several lines of evidence suggest that different infectious agents might provide a chronic antigenic stimulation that elicits host immune responses able to promote clonal B-cell expansion. This model is also substantiated by the increasing number of patients with MALT lymphomas who exhibit objective clinical responses after antimicrobial therapy. A multidisciplinary approach is critical to better understand the complex etiopathogenesis of MALT lymphomas with the final goal to dissect the clinicopathologic heterogeneity of these disorders and design more tailored preventive and therapeutic approaches

    Enhanced Gas Sensing Performance of CuO-ZnO Composite Nanostructures for Low-Concentration NO2 Detection

    The detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is essential for safeguarding human health and addressing environmental sustainability. That is why, in the last decades, gas sensors have been developed to detect NO2 to overcome these hazards. This study explores the use of a novel CuO-ZnO composite synthesized through a polyol and sol–gel technique to enhance gas sensing performance. The CuO-ZnO composite offers the advantage of a synergic combination of its properties, leading to improved sensitivity, selectivity, and low detection limit. The innovative polyol technique employed in this research enables the controlled synthesis of hierarchical CuO and porous ZnO structures. The composite formation is achieved using the sol–gel method, resulting in CuO-ZnO composites with different ratios. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the materials have been characterized using FESEM, X-ray diffraction, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Gas sensing experiments demonstrate enhanced performance, particularly in sensitivity and selectivity for NO2, even at low concentrations. The composites also exhibit improved baseline stability compared to pristine CuO and ZnO. This study explains the influence of humidity on gas sensing properties by examining interactions between water molecules and sensor surfaces. Notably, the developed CuO-ZnO composite displays excellent selectivity towards NO2, attributed to favorable bonding characteristics and acid-base properties. Overall, this research contributes to advancing gas sensor technology, providing a promising potential for sensitive and selective NO2 detection, thereby addressing critical needs for human health and environmental protection

    IL-17 superfamily cytokines modulate normal germinal center B cell migration

    The germinal center (GC) is a dynamic structure formed by proliferating B cells in the follicles of secondary lymphoid organs during T cell-dependent antibody responses to exogenous antigens. GC is composed by a dark zone, enriched in proliferating centroblasts (CBs), and a light zone where CBs migrate and transform into centrocytes (CCs), a minority of which is selected to survive, undergoes Ig class-switch recombination, and differentiates into memory B cells or long-lived plasma cells. CBs express CXCR4 and are attracted to the dark zone by stromal cell-derived CXCL12, whereas CCs express CXCR5 and are recruited to the light zone along a gradient of CXCL13 produced by follicular dendritic cells (FDCs). Therefore, CXCL12 and CXCL13 play crucial roles in the regulation of GC B cell trafficking. Among the numerous molecules involved in GC formation, IL-17A represents a recent addition. Its involvement has been demonstrated in mouse models of human autoimmune or infectious diseases. IL-17A belongs to the IL-17 cytokine superfamily, together with 5 additional structurally related cytokines. We have recently demonstrated that IL-17A renders freshly isolated tonsil GC B cells competent to migrate to CXCL12 and CXCL13 through a NF-kBp65-dependentmechanism. Here, we review the role of IL-17A on GC cells and discuss, for the first time, common effects of the cognate cytokines IL-25 and IL-17B on GC B cell function. © Society for Leukocyte Biology
