    Ionic liquids under nanoscale confinement

    The confinement of room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) in nanoscale geometries, where at least one, but often all three dimensions are reduced down to lengths comparable to the anion-cation size, put the ILs into a quite different condition with respect to their bulk phase. An understanding of the properties of the ILs confined in a nanoscale-constrained geometry is of both fundamental and practical interest. In particular, the spatial restriction of ILs promotes a strong interaction of the ILs with the surface of the confining matrix, which strongly affects their properties, like the phase transition behavior, layering near surface walls, wetting, as well as ionic mobility. This short review is especially concerned with the interfacial confinement of ILs on solid substrates, in the form of very thin films, or inside porous nanomaterials

    Postmodernisme et recherche en marketing

    This article highlights some of the limits of the traditional approach of research through the review of the history of marketing and the analysis of the underlying epistemology. This evidence shows how revolutionary the effects of adopting postmodernism could be on marketing, and particularly on marketing research. In the light of this new perspective, many long-established concepts such as knowledge, scientific progress, methodology and rigour should be reconsidered. More than likely directions are therefore envisaged in the future, and a postmodern interpretation of marketing research is suggested, i.e. the experiential research

    CONSOLIDATION AND RESTORATION OF HISTORICAL HERITAGE: THE FLAVIAN AMPHITHEATER IN ROME

    The recovery and retrofitting techniques adopted for historical structures and archaeological sites face an apparent dichotomy between conservation of constructions and the safety of users. Literatures show several examples where the current day structural safety of historical constructions, gets defined by the nature of past interventions, the compatibility of materials and elements used in retrofitting. The adopted interventions were, in their time, considered innovative, but over the years their compatibility and reversibility leave the historic constructions structurally vulnerable. For these reasons, a careful understanding of the structural systems is fundamental for the implementation of appropriate retrofitting solutions. Especially for monuments and Archaeological sites the objective to be achieved has to be clear, avoiding destructive investigation tests. In this work the instabilities caused by a consolidation intervention on some travertine columns in a sector of the Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as "Colosseum “in Rome, are critically analysed. The current consolidation operations are compared to the previous one. The restoration activity involves in-depth diagnosis process: the historical analysis of the failures and restorations of that area of the Colosseum, a survey of the crack pattern and an indirect investigation on the travertine of the columns. Subsequently the various data coming from the knowledge phase are elaborated, in order to have a correct interpretation of the causes triggering the failure and guide the choice of the most correct retrofitting techniques

    Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Transplant Tolerance

    In solid organ transplantation lifelong immunosuppression exposes transplant recipients to life-threatening complications, such as infections and malignancies, and to severe side effects. Cellular therapy with mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) has recently emerged as a promising strategy to regulate anti-donor immune responses, allowing immunosuppressive drug minimization and tolerance induction. In this review we summarize preclinical data on MSC in solid organ transplant models, focusing on potential mechanisms of action of MSC, including down-regulation of effector T-cell response and activation of regulatory pathways. We will also provide an overview of available data on safety and feasibility of MSC therapy in solid organ transplant patients, highlighting the issues that still need to be addressed before establishing MSC as a safe and effective tolerogenic cell therapy in transplantation
