    Massive gravity: A general analysis

    No full text
Massive gravity can be described by adding to the Einstein-Hilbert action a function V of metric components. By using the Hamiltonian canonical analysis, we find the most general form of V such that five degrees of freedom propagate non perturbatively. The construction is based on a set of differential equations for V , that remarkably can be solved in terms of two arbitrary functions. Besides recovering the known “Lorentz invariant” massive gravity theory, we find an entirely new class of solutions, with healthy features on the phenomenological side, in particular they are weakly coupled in the solar system and have a high ultraviolet cutoff Λ2 = (mMpl)1/2, where m is the graviton mass scale

Recetario en busca de dueño: perfumería, medicina,y confitería en la casa del VII duque de Montalto (1635-1666)

Document number thirty from the manuscripts of the Count of Harrach, preserved in the Vienna State Archives, is an exceptionally interesting home recipe book that contains numerous personal annotations by a person whose identity we will reveal in this article. These insightful notes reveal details regarding the practices and use of perfume in a home of the nobility in the 17th century. Perfume waters, incense, pastilles and pomanders are some of the products that could be prepared by following the instructions in the recipes. A detailed analysis of the manuscript has led us to discover the owner and author of the annotations, as well as get a better understanding of the significance of perfume for the noble elite of the Spanish monarchy.

    Nonderivative Modified Gravity: a Classification

    No full text
We analyze the theories of gravity modified by a generic nonderivative potential built from the metric, under the minimal requirement of unbroken spatial rotations. Using the canonical analysis, we classify the potentials VV according to the number of degrees of freedom (DoF) that propagate at the nonperturbative level. We then compare the nonperturbative results with the perturbative DoF propagating around Minkowski and FRW backgrounds. A generic VV implies 6 propagating DoF at the non-perturbative level, with a ghost on Minkowski background. There exist potentials which propagate 5 DoF, as already studied in previous works. Here, no VV with unbroken rotational invariance admitting 4 DoF is found. Theories with 3 DoF turn out to be strongly coupled on Minkowski background. Finally, potentials with only the 2 DoF of a massive graviton exist. Their effect on cosmology is simply equivalent to a cosmological constant. Potentials with 2 or 5 DoF and explicit time dependence appear to be a further viable possibility. We analyze the theories of gravity modified by a generic nonderivative potential built from the metric, under the minimal requirement of unbroken spatial rotations. Three-dimensional topology and Verlinde formulas

We study the properties of the gauge invariant observables of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons field theory; it is shown that the algebra structure determined by the observables is isomorphic with the fusion rules of two-dimensional conformal theories. In the colour state space of the link components, a projective representation of the modular group is defined. The relations satisfied by the S matrix of the conformal models admit an interpretation in terms of three-dimensional topology; we describe the topological origin of these relations

    Non-Abelian SU(3) Chern-Simons theory

We consider the non-Abelian SU(3) Chem-Simons field theory in a generic three-manifold. We give the general expressions for the values of the unknot and of the Hopf link in R3. The structure of the reduced tensor algebra associated with SU(3) is reported and the surgery rules, which permit us to solve the theory in a generic three-manifold, are derived. We define a three-manifold invariant which is associated with the non-abelian SU(3) Chem-Simons model. The value of this invariant is computed for various three-manifolds
