Since the second half of the 19th century, many Italians settled in Argentine lands and, if
some decided to stay in the city of Buenos Aires, considered the most Italian foreign city in
the world, others moved to rural areas, creating new urban centres and influencing the culture
of the host country. This is particularly evident in Buenos Aires, but also in the more populated
urban areas where Italian culture is prevalent, while in the rural areas it coexists with the
indigenous populations. Through the analysis of thirty interviews with first-generation emigrants,
Italo-descendants and newcomers, this article investigates the motivations that lead
Italians to choose Argentina today, as well as the different life-styles between those who reside
in the capital and those who choose the interior areas
What is the role of responsible tourism in building stronger and intercultural communities? Two case studies from Italy
this chapter reflects upon the contradictions of the process of globalization and localization through an analysis of the relation between tourism and migration as two interrelated phenomena concerning human mobility. Through a cultural perspective on responsible tourism, it aims to shed light on how tourism plays an essential role in local development processes, as well as in the social and spatial dialectic that gives meaning to places (Rojek and Urry, 1997). Two empirical case studies from Bologna, Italy, are presented and analyzed: the festival of responsible tourism, IT.A.CA’, and Bologna Migrantour, a project promoting intercultural urban itineraries in European cities. The final part of the paper explores the role of responsible tourism in building stronger and intercultural communities (Bauman, 2000a), encouraging inclusive participation and intercultural encounters
Esplorando i significati
This essay is conceived as an introduction to Travel and Trespassing, a volume dedicated to the themes of travel, the border and, trespassing - the act that transcends it. Trespassing is understood as both an intellectual and physical practice for affirming of freedom. The first paragraph of the essay, Ambivalences and Shadow Lines, defines the concepts of journey, frontier and border through a comparative perspective. It also sets out to explore the wider tensions and dissonances that run through this semantic field. Through a subsequent commentary on a passage from Cormac McCarthy's novel The Crossing, there is the opportunity to reflect on recurring themes, such as wandering, encountering the other, and hospitality. The second section, The Frontiers of Travel, engages with a sociological perspective on the multiplication of borders – which gives more emphasis on them as devices that materialise through the media and the imagery they nurture - and the consequences they have on people. The last part of the essay, entitled Crossing the Boundary between Media, Genres and Disciplines, introduces the volume with a brief survey of travel literature and the constellations of knowledge and languages that concern it. In conclusion, the essays that make up the volume are summarized, as well as the thematic and interdisciplinary relations that exist between the sections of the volume and of the journal are highlighted.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Humanitarian communication
Humanitarian Communication is part of the Encyclopedia that offers a comprehensive coverage of the full range of themes associated with the study and practice of migration, arts and activism in the global world. The Encyclopedia has a clear focus on migration but at the same time is enriched by broader approaches from social sciences, activism and the arts, making it a truly unique and multi-disciplinary resource
Mare Nostrum: the visual politics of a military-humanitarian operation in the Mediterranean Sea
Since the early 1990s, the ‘migration crisis’ has been high on Europe’s agenda and a
main cause of concern for European citizens. In recent years, numerous activists and
scholars have denounced how the militarisation of migration and border controls has
been explicitly bound with notions of humanitarianism. As such, the current focus on
both the securitarian and humanitarian sides of the phenomenon supports a more
complex logic of threat and benevolence that allows for a security-humanitarian
response. Assuming the launch of Mare Nostrum – the military-humanitarian operation
in the Mediterranean targeted at both rescuing migrants and arresting smugglers – as a
transformative moment in the communication strategies of Italy, this article examines
the narratives produced by the Italian Navy during the operation, and how these
invite us to witness them. Pivoting on the interrelated notions of ‘war imaginary’ and
‘emergency imaginary’, this article investigates how photographs and videos produced
by Italian soldiers have contributed to represent the Mediterranean as a ‘humanitarian
battlefield’. Thus, exploring the visual politics of Mare Nostrum within the broader
framework of the new mediated warfare, it indicates how the bio-political imperative
of managing lives is visually expressed through an aesthetic of trauma, where ‘war’ (on
migrants) is represented both as an intimate experience of sorrow and as a public act
of peacemaking
Creativity, tourism, and development: the case of Emilia Romagna region, Italy
In order to shed light on the creative economy as a cross-topic in economic and sociological research, the paper focuses on the concept of “local creative system” (LCS) as a socio-territorial entity characterized by the high concentration of creative industries and by specific features and identity that facilitate the generation and diffusion of creativity. Focusing on two case studies related to the strategic role that the touristic sector has for Emilia Romagna’s economy – the Motor Valley and the Festival of Responsible Tourism IT.A.CÀ - the paper explores how tourism and cultural heritage engage in a virtuous circuit for regional competitiveness. Particularly, while in the former case we can observe a top-down strategy enacted by the Institutions to develop a territory that produce motors into a mass touristic attraction; in the latter case we are in front of a bottom-up approach endorsed by a wide range of local actors of the profit and non profit sector aimed at promoting the paradigm of responsible tourism as a tool of sustainable development
