A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.
PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in
Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty
years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's
patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the
scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social,
economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of
Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the
political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men
such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put
the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean
regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile
on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding,
and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances
and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi
were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in
his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons;
none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were
by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of
Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they
succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to
Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage
there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an
economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts
of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted
into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained
excluded from significant political office until after the fall of
the Medici regime in 1494
Bronchial artery embolization with an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer agent (Squid) and polyvinyl alcohol particles for treatment of hemoptysis
Bronchial artery embolization (BAE) is considered the first choice treatment for hemoptysis. To our knowledge no cases of BAE using a recent ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer agent (Squid) have been previously mentioned. Two cases of BAE for remitting hemoptysis using Squid and polyvinyl alcohol particles are reported in this technical note. The final angiographic control confirmed full exclusion of the target territory in both cases. Both patients felt some chest pain immediately after the embolization, not requiring any medications. No more episodes of hemoptysis occurred in the following 3 months after the procedure
Postoperative "Chimney" for Unintentional Renal Artery Occlusion after EVAR
Renal artery obstruction during endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm using standard device is a rare but life-threatening complication and should be recognized and repaired rapidly in order to maintain renal function. Both conventional surgery and endovascular stenting have been reported. We report a case of late postoperative bilateral "chimney" to resolve a bilateral thrombosis of the renal artery following an uncomplicated endovascular aortic repair
Trancatheter embolization of pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm with detachable coils in association with non-adhesive liquid embolizing agent (Squid)
: A nodular lesion at the lower left pulmonary lobe was detected in a 46 years old male during a preoperative chest X-Ray for appendicitis. To further characterise the nodule, a contrast enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) was performed showing a 20 mm vascular lesion, which was suspected to be a pseudoaneurysm. The diagnostic angiography detected a flattening of the vascular wall with a voluminous pseudoaneurysm (PSA) in the distal portion of the tributary branch of the inferior left lobe. To treat the lesion, a 2.9F microcatheter was advanced into the sac and 4 detachable coils were placed (16-18mm Penumbra Inc) to pack the PSA. To block vascular supply to the lesion, the feeding artery was embolized with an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer agent (Squid Peri 18, Emboflu). The final angiographic control showed the exclusion of the pseudoaneurysmal sac which was confirmed by SEMARTM reconstructed CE-CT scan after 40 days. Furthermore, no signs of pulmonary infarction were reported. (www.actabiomedica.it)

ITALIANO. A short filmic example from the AMC's award-winning series Mad Men in which the sensorial and emotional relationship between the spectator and a moving body, i.e., a dancing body, is explicitly put into play. The essay wants to deal with the so called naturalization of phenomenology and of the living body, trained by the cognitive sciences reading the visuality. The author shows the relationship between the so called ‘embodied Simulation’ and a symbolic and iconographic deep memory of the pictures, and he gives an in-depth attention to the polarity between projections and introjections, activity and passivity of the spectator’s body during the empathic experience of the moving pictures
Cone beam computed tomography and its image guidance technology during percutaneous nucleoplasty procedures at L5/S1 lumbar level
Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility of percutaneous nucleoplasty procedures at L5/S1 level using cone beam CT (CBCT) and its associated image guidance technology for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed 25 cases (20 men, 5 women) of LDH at L5/S1 levels. CBCT as guidance imaging was chosen after a first unsuccessful fluoroscopy attempt that was related to complex anatomy (n = 15), rapid pathological changes due to degenerative diseases (n = 7) or both (n = 3). Technical success, defined as correct needle positioning in the target LDH, and safety were evaluated; overall procedure time and radiation dose were registered. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to evaluate pain and discomfort pre-intervention after 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months after the procedure. Results: Technical success was 100 %; using CBCT as guidance imaging the needle was correctly positioned at the first attempt in 20 out of 25 patients. Neither major nor minor complications were registered during or after the procedure. The average procedure time was 11 min and 56 s (range, 9–15 min), whereas mean procedural radiation dose was 46.25 Gy.cm2 (range 38.10–52.84 Gy.cm2), and mean fluoroscopy time was 5 min 34 s (range 3 min 40 s to 6 min 55 s). The VAS pain score decreased significantly from 7.6 preoperatively to 3.9 at 1 week, 2.8 at 1 month, 2.1 at 3 months, and 1.6 at 6 months postoperatively. Conclusions: CBCT-guided percutaneous nucleoplasty is a highly effective technique for LDH with acceptable procedure time and radiation dose
Multiple political geographies
This chapter delves into the multifaceted realm of political geography within the context of the journal Political Geography. The author, who has held various editorial positions within the journal, navigates the intricate terrain of diversity and inclusion, exploring the challenges posed by linguistic and cultural biases inherent in academic publishing. The chapter critically examines efforts to mitigate barriers and broaden the scope of political geography, questioning the adequacy of current approaches. Through a reflective analysis, the author elucidates the complex dynamics of political geography as a subdiscipline, shedding light on both the impediments and possibilities it offers to researchers and students
