    No full text
In this account, professor Michelangelo Bovero remembers Norberto Bobbio in his role as a teacher. Taking his last lecture as a starting point, the author tells us, for example, about Bobbio\u27s teaching career, the content and development of his courses, his teaching methodology, his transition from professor of Legal philosophy to professor of Political philosophy, and about his particular admiration and respect for the classics. In this way, as an act of farewell to his teacher, the author presents his vision of both the human and the teaching facets of Norberto Bobbio through anecdotes, words, gestures and aspects of the philosopher\u27s personality.

    Aging and the kidney

    No full text
Purpose of review: Aging in most species is associated with impaired adaptive and homeostatic mechanisms, leading to susceptibility to environmental or internal stresses with increasing rates of disease. A number of different theories of primarily disease-independent renal aging, which can be categorized as evolutionary, molecular, cellular and systemic, have been put forward in the past decades, and recent studies have provided evidence for some of them. Recent findings: This review is focused on the several mechanisms that are considered to underlie the primary aging process and contribute to age-related changes and adaptive responses in the kidney. These mechanisms include genetic modulations, telomere shortening, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, all markers of cell senescence. Moreover, we also highlight new advances in understanding functions of angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor that contribute to the renal aging process. Summary: Here we review recent advances in understanding the role of Klotho, sirtuins, cell senescence through oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as of the renin-angiotensin system in modulating age-related kidney damage

Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Therapy and Risk of Malignancies

Cell therapy with Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC) holds enormous promise for the treatment of a large number of degenerative and immune/inflammatory diseases. Their multilineage differentiation potential, immunoprivilege and capacity of promoting recovery of damaged tissues coupled with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties are the focus of a multitude of clinical studies currently underway. The recognized clinical potential of MSC repairing/immunomodulatory effects now encompasses graft-versus-host disease, hematologic malignancies, cardiovascular diseases, neurologic and inherited diseases, autoimmune diseases, organ transplantation, refractory wounds, and bone/cartilage defects among others. However, it has been suggested that both the need of extensive ex vivo culture for MSC clinical use, and their proangiogenic, anti-apoptotic and immunomodulatory properties may act together as tumor promoters, raising significant safety concerns. This paper will review the available data on in vitro MSC maldifferentiation and the ability of MSC to sustain tumor growth in vivo, with the aim to clarify whether MSC-based therapeutic approaches may carry actual risk of malignancies
