Contemporary landscape and the archaeological record. An integrated approach to the study of the Etruscan-Samnite site of Pontecagnano (SA)

Pontecagnano is a large Etruscan-Samnite settlement located 8 km SE of Salerno, at the northern edge of the Sele plain. The well-investigated necropolis provided data that made it possible to analyse the structure of the ancient community and reconstruct its long-term development. Over the last few years, after archaeological investigations carried out during roadwork to widen the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway, a more systematic study of the site was begun. The analysis of archaeological data was combined with environmental and landscape studies, shedding light on the reasons behind the spatial organisation of the settlement, which was influenced by natural or man-made landscape elements such as streams, non-uniform dislocation of geological formations, terraces, roads, canals, etc. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the methods and instruments we used to develop a system that can dynamically combine archaeological and geomorphological data. The paper focuses particularly on the reconstruction of paleo-topographical areas of the ancient settlement. Our investigation outlined the physical and environmental limits within which the old town developed, especially as regards the archaic and classical period. Part of the work was devoted to reconstructing in detail the connections between the modern and the ancient landscape, not only by reading and interpreting the aerial photographs from 1945 to the present-day, but also by analyzing the evidence from the excavations. This approach allowed us to draw up a detailed geomorphologic map of the area of the ancient settlement - part of the GIS platform - and develop a three-dimensional model of the ground (DEM)

Comparison between Eurocodes and North American and main international codes for design of bolted connections in steel bridges

    No full text
Bolted joints are broadly used for the connections of structural elements in steel bridges. Rules for design of bolted connections are currently under discussion in Europe for improving Part 1-8 of Eurocode 3, which deals with the sizing and structural design of joints. In this work, a wide comparison is made between the Eurocode and the codes of Italy, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan. General descriptions of the design criteria for typical connections in bridges related to materials, geometrical limitations, slip, shear, and bearing resistance are presented. An illustrative example to compare the various code provisions is given to quantitatively show their performance for a practical case. © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers

Collapse mechanisms of masonry buttressed arch with settled support

    No full text
This contribute analyses the collapse mechanisms of a circular masonry arch supported on rectangular slender abutments when subjected to an imposed settlement of one support in addition to self-weight, using the principle of virtual work and thrust line analysis. Depending on the angle of settlement and the slenderness of the arch and the abutments, the study identifies the main hinging failure mechanisms where the hinge configurations depend mainly on the angle of the settlement and the slenderness of the arch. An extensive analysis shows the different possible collapse mechanisms of masonry buttressed arches with different type of support settlements

Linear buckling analysis of welded girder webs with variable thickness

    No full text
Steel girder web panels have been subjected in recent decades, to a number of experimental and numerical studies but the mechanisms that regulate the behaviour of the panels composed by two subpanels with different thickness were not deeply studied. Furthermore specific design rules regarding the estimation of the buckling coefficient for panels with variable thickness are not included in the codes even if this is a common situation particularly for steel bridge girders with beams having significant height. In this framework, this work aims to investigate buckling behaviour of steel beams with webs composed of panels with different thicknesses subjected to both in-plane axial compression and bending moment and gives some simplified equations for the estimation of the buckling coefficient

Linear Elastic Behavior of Circular Holed Steel Box Sections Under Compression

    No full text
The aim of this work is to provide insights into the linear elastic behavior of steel box sections with centered and eccentric holes, placed at various points on the sides and at the corners of sections, and subjected to uniform compression. The influence of the following parameters was observed on stability, mainly through critical deformed shapes: (a) ratio of section aspects, (b) length-to-width ratio, (c) slenderness of sides, (d) diameter of holes, (e) coordinates x and y of the position of the hole on one side of the box section. Indications regarding important design aspects are given: (a) the best location for a single hole, or several holes, in cross-section; (b) the effects of circular holes with small, medium and large diameters on the linear buckling factor; (c) the effect of symmetric and eccentric holes for purposes of stability; (d) the best performing transversal section for square to rectangular holed box sections, in terms of stability; (e) critical slenderness values at which transition occurs from ultimate strength collapse of stocky box sections and critical elastic stress of slender ones

In this paper we present the main results of an investigation among Mathematics students and future Mathematics teachers, carried out for testing the effectiveness of a particular model of written texts for the popularization of Mathematics. The investigation was useful for the set up of a book which we are writing in order to get a good didactical tool for Mathematics education
